Stereophonic Sound Programs Scheduled For 13 More Weeks MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or... Sunday, September 14. 1951 A 13-week series of stereo phonic sound radio programs win be broadcast through the cooperation of radio stations KMED and KYJC starting to- Four Tracts of BLM Timber Sold At Medford Office Bids totaling $312,982.90 were placed for four tracts of timber offered in Medford Sept. 11 by the bureau of land management. Five bidders qualified for each of the three smaller tracts, while only one bidder qualified for the largest tract. The latter contained an esti mated 8,117,000 board feet and was purchased by Bate Lumber company, Merlin, for the appraised price of $172, 131.50, according to Robert D. Hostetter, BLM assistant district manager, who con ducted the sale. Caveman Lumber company, Grants Pass, was the success ful bidder for 2,279,000 board feet of timber in Josephine county. The sale price was $64,345.80, with $29.50 per thousand board feet being bid for the predominant species Douglas-fir. A tract in Jackson county containing an estimated 2, 951,000 board feet was award ed to Lithia Lumber company of Ashland, which submitted the high bid of $59,040.50. Bidding was limited to white fir, which constituted about half the total volume, with the final unit price being $21 for the white fir. Cabax Mills of Medford was the successful bidder for 622, 000 board feet of timber in Josephine county. The total consideration bid was $17,' 465.10. 1 The next regular timber auction to be conducted by the Medford district of the bureau of land management will be on Oct. 16. More than 20 billion board feet in nine tracts will be offered at that time. 251 Housing Starts Reported by FNMA E u g e n e Congressman Charles O. Porter (D-Ore.) has received word from the Fed eral National Mortgage asso ciation that 251 housing starts, totaling $3,045,150, have been approved in six Fourth Con gressional District cities. Funds for the new lower-cost home starts are provided in the Emergency Housing Act of 1958 and are used to pur chase FHA and VA mortgages. Porter was told the figures were based on Aug. 28 sta tistics. The Federal National Mort gage association has approved 1,063 housing mortgages in 22 Oregon communities totaling $12,815,000, according to the report Porter received Sept. 9. The new home starts are for $13,500 or less. Cities in the jjourtn .District where new starts have been approved in clude: Central Point 1 mortgage for $10,400; and Medford 6 mortgages for $77,600. FNMA President J. S. Baughman said the program had provided "quite a stimu lant" to the housing industry. morrow night, according to Kay Johnson and Tom Mc Leod, managers of the stations. Programs will be broadcast between 8 and 9 o'clock Mon day, Tuesday and Wednesday nights, they said. The series will continue for 13 weeks. Johnson and McLeod said KMED would be responsible for technical aspects of the broadcast, and both stations would share announcing sponsibilities. Stereophonic sound was in augurated in the area last I Wednesday night through the cooperation of the two sta tions, Jennings Pierce, Med ford and former radio an nouncer, and the Verl G. waiKer company, area repre sentative for the Voice of Mu sic corporation. Response Gratifying Response to the broadcast. radio station managers said, has been gratifying. Many residents indicated they would like more such broad-1 casts, and commented they enjoyed the program. One person wrote he is looking forward to hearing Christmas Carols in stereophonic sound. One person wrote that "it was really wonderful and most progressive gesture." Telephone calls during and immediately following the program last Wednesday were numerous, with as many as 40 calls at one station during the evening. More than 750 residents at tended an open house at the Jackson hotel Thursday night at which stereophonic sound equipment was displayed and demonstrated. Ted Christen- sen, merchandising manager of the Verl G. Walker com pany, said "we were tremen dously pleased with the suc cess of the open house, and we believe people have a far better understanding of ster eophonic sound." For the best reception of I stereophonic sound, listeners should use two radio sets, one tuned, to KYJC and the other to KMED. The sets should be placed 8 to 10 feet apart and facing the listener, who in turn should be about 10 feet from the sets. This plan, Walker said, gives the listener a tru bin aural effect, which is an in tegral part of stereophonic sound. Binaural, two sources of sound of the same program, Drings out a realistic repro duction of the original music not achieved by more com mon recording and playing devices. CJ Council Plans New City Building Cave Junction - At a city council meeting this week, Larry Cushing, chairman of the building committee, re ported on his recent confer ence with Robert Easton. stu dent architect at University of Oregon who is drafting plans for a new city hall. Easton has completed his new draft, incorporating changes proposed by the coun cil members at a special meet ing. After a visit to Cave Junc tion, Easton offered to rede sign the exterior -of the build ing to give it a more modern look in keeping with other recent structures. A site for the proposed new municipal building is still under dis cussion.
