Hill youth wound up his summer vacation with an unusual and painful experience Tuesday of this week. Donald Gail and his moth r, Mrs. Norman Gail, were picking blackberries on the Gailand ranch north of town when Donald noticed his dog sniffing around an old bar rel lying overturned on the ground. When he lifted the barrel to look underneath a skunk "let him have it" full in the face. Donald was temporarily blinded and his screams of pain brought his mother to his assistance. She washed his face with water from an irri gation ditch, and after hours of washing and scrubbing at home, the pain finally sub sided. Mrs. Gail said neither she nor her son had seen the skunk during the excitement. Donald's dog was also hit in the face by the barrage. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gray from Sept. 5 to Sept. 8 The Grays took their guests to the play day held at Camp White on Sunday, Sept. Mr. and Mrs. Gray partici pated in the horseback square dancing with the Medford Trailriders. Other local peo ple taking part in the same portion of the program were Mrs. Robert Jacks, Mrs. Stan ley Foley and Miss Jean Es- tremado. Danny Estremado, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Estremado, and Kenneth Foley son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Foley, took part in the children's events on horseback. While in southern Oregon the Dal- tons and Grays also visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Gray and daughter, Nancy, on Fourth ave. m Gold Hill. Ricky Stadt of Grand Rap Ids, Mich., returned to his home recently by plane after spending the summer months as a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Molloy and sons, David and Donald. The Molloys took their guest to Yellowstone Nation al park for a week s vacation, returning by way of Portland where they spent two days. Mr. and Mrs. Art Taylor of Griffith, Ind., have returned to their home following a sev eral week's visit in the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Tay lor on Riverside Drive. The Taylors also visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. "Mike" Taylor and children, Ronnie and Eileen, while they were in Gold Hill. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Dens- more and daughter, Sandra, former residents, came from their home in Roseburg for a visit with Taylor's houpe guests. Mrs. Densmore is the A. B. Taylor's daughter. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Hoff man returned to their home on highway 99, north of Gold Hill, last week from a sev eral days vacation on the Oregon coast and in Estaca da, where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Batkain. In Portland they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Eli View. Both women are cousins of Hoff man. 1 Enroute home the Hoffmans stopped in Silverton, where they visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lorenzon The two couples are long time friends, having known each other in Guam. Pamela Freeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Freeman, has been named winner of a free round-trip plane ticket to Klamath Falls, by the Gold Hill Christian church. The plane trip was awarded in recognition for her record of individual at tendance in the junior Sun day school class, and for memory verse work from the Bible over a three month pe riod. Mrs. Leonard Andrews is teacher of this age group The Sunday school class having - the greatest increase in attendance over a three- month period was the high school group. They earned a week-end trip to the coast. Clarence Freeman is teacher for the young people. The group will be accompanied on the trip by Mr. and Mrs. Freeman and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Straus. Mrs. Leonard Andrews and Mrs. Rex Allison, members of the girls junior Sunday school class, and their guests, went to Evans Creek Friday, Sept. 5, where they spent the day swimming and picnicking. Guests were Linda Lou Walker, Doris Caldwell, Lana Hilkey, Kathy Volmert, and Jean Centers. Class mem bers attending were Joan Hilkey, Linda Hilkey, Lyn day Munday, Cahrlotte Vole- mert, Pamella Freeman, ; Wanda Munday, Jackie Straus and Jannie Straus. Mrs. Lucy and Mrs. Ethel Edington spent several days last week in Eugene, where they were house guests at the home of Mrs. Lucy Eding- ton's son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Ba con and son, Rodney. The Bacons are former Medford residents and their son was among the graduates last spring of Medford High school. He will enter Oregon State college. Before returning home the two women spent a day at the State Fair at Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Newn- ham were hosts to a barbecue dinner held in the garden at their home on Fourth ave. Saturday evening, Sept. 6. The occasion was in ob servance of their son, Stan ley s birthday anniversary. Others attending were Mrs Stanley Newnham and their daughter, Cindy, Gold Hill, Mr. and Mrs. Veltie Biles, and Richard Biles all of Grants Pass, F. M. Snider and Wayne "Wink" Newn ham both of Gold Hill. Bill Wyatt, a former resi dent, was an overnight guest in the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Newnham Wed nesday, Sept. 3. The employees of the K. Lines, Inc., and their wives went to Grants Pass Satur day evening, Sept. 6, where they held a surprise pot-luck dinner in the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kershaw, located on the banks of the Rogue river. The Kershaws were presented a barbecue brazier from the group. They moved to Grants Pass recent ly from Coos Bay and are the owners of K. Lines. Robert Allison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Allison spent several days last week vis iting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Burril at Lake Creek. Mstrtbsted by Bag Ttatmm Bjm Museum Attendance at Jacksonville Increases Jacksonville Attendance at the Jacksonville museum during August, 1958, in creased 290 persons over the same period a year ago with 7,231 visitors reported last month. This brought the total attendance figure from July 10, 1950, to Sept. 1 this year to 304,517. During the first eight months of this year there were 30,514 visitors. Visitors last month were registered from 40 states, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Ja pan, Australia, Sweden, Eng land, Wales, Colombia, Ger many, New Zealand, and For mosa. A number of groups also toured the museum, including a class from the College of the Pacific, Stockton, Calif.; class from San Jose State college, San Jose, Calif.; and members of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Grants Pass, and the Medford Boy Scouts. Gifts Loaned Another group of gifts and loans also was received dur ing the month. Contributors included Oliver Tice, Harold Comstock, Jimmy King, Steve placed on the street where it can be readily reached by the truck. For one thousand years people in China and Japan have trained cormorants to aid them in fishing. , List Suspended Drivers' Licenses Salem The department of motor vehicles has re leased names of 482 drivers whose licenses were ordered suspended during the period beginning Aug. 29 and ending Sept. 5. Length of suspension var ies, depending on charges in volved, recommendation of court, discretionary action by the department or require ments of Oregon law. The de partment said some of the li censes involving financial re sponsibility and court recom mendations may have been re-instated after suspension was ordered. The department warned drivers that the penalty for driving while suspended is a jail sentence of no less than two days and up to six months, and there may be im posed a fine up to $500. Un der licensing procedures, this will also result in an addi tional year of suspension.
