POOR FISH Commuters between Weehaw ken, N. J., and New York protest the Im pending shutdown of ferry service across th e Hudson River, scheduled for Sept. 12. The boat is the only way across the river at Wee hawken, and if the ferry stops running the commuters will all have to change to fish and swim. SHADY COVE-TRAIL Meeting Set For Monday By EVALYN P. WATSON Shady Cove -Trail The Rogue Basin Water Resources and Flood Control association will hold a meeting Monday evening, Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Jackson county courthouse, Medford. Ross Hatch, U.S. Corps of Engineers, will be present to give details of the corps Rogue Basin proposals. Also present, as a speaker, will be O. M. Browne of the Bureau of Reclamation,. Boise, Idaho. All interested persons in the area are urged to be present. Shady Cove-Trail - The Shady Cove Rotary club en tertained their wives and guests at a potluck picnic din ner held at Walch's Lake re sort Thursday evening, Aug. 28. Entertainment was furn ished by Judy Stuart and Monte Noble, two girl accord ionists who are students . of Eve Prentice of Medford. They were guests of the club along with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Golden Noble and sister, Sandra Noble, of Med ford. " ; ' Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hopkins, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Pfeifer and Dr. and Mrs. Verne Wilson of Shady Cove, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Trimble of Marysville, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Chandler Drew of Medr ford and Duchin Pasic of Bel grade, Yugoslavia. Pasic is a student at Southern Ore gon college and is living with Mr. and Mrs. Drew during his stay in the country. His plans are to return to Yugo slavia as a teacher. He gave a talk on Yugo slavia, touching on such varied topics as agriculture, religion, educational systems as compared to the U.S., so cial customs and special holi days. Following his talk an Informal question period fol lowed. The lake with the moonlight shining on the water made an ideal setting for the picnic and children roasted marsh mellows over the campfire. Members of the Shady Cove Garden club who spent Fri day touring many of the gar dens in the Prospect area were Mesdames Ed Strother, Miles Williams, William Shep herd and. Floyd Kelley. The gardens seem to be particu larly lovely at . this time of year in that area as it is much cooler than in the valley and so the flowers do exception ally well. Gardens visited were those of Everett Shafer, Archie McKillop, Warren Barr Sr., Hazel Ulrich, John Davidson and Willard Huff man. Residents of the area are warned to be particularly careful around their yards and in fields, since a number of rattlers have been seen and killed this year. Slim Leiders found one lying up next to his house and killed it. The snake had about seven rattles. Bill Shepherd, across the road from the Leiders, found a big one just off their front porch and another in their rasp berry bushes which got away. The Scottie and Mignon Par rick at their river home at Lewis creek, have killed two this summer, one measuring 36 inches. Mrs. L. H. Wolters and daughter, Shirley, of Oakland, Calif-, are house guests of her sister' and family, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Williams of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. John Abel of Shady Cove have had a great deal of company this past month. House guests have been Mrs. Abel's daughter, Mrs. Jean Thomas and Rob ert Wiley, both of San Fern ando. Other guests have been Mr. and Mrs. Joe Crunk of San Fernando. Mrs. Abel is a teacher in the San Fernando schools and Mrs. Thomas, Mr Wiley and Mr. Crunk are all teachers in schools there Mr. and"Mrs. Ernie Segess- enman of Shady Cove have returned home after a month's vacationing in the northwest and Canada. They visited Yellowstone and Glacier Na tional parks and called on relatives in several towns in Saskatchewan, as well as in Kellogg, Idaho, Vancouver, B.C., and Eugene, Ore. They also visited Grand Coulee dam. Newcomers to Shady Cove are Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Dick inson and baby boy, Ronnie, from Shelton, Wash., who have rented the Ed Abernathy home. Dickinson will be em ployed by the Taylor sheet metal works in Medford. Hfr V.rl Ahprnathv anri daughter, Shirley, who have spent the past month visit ing with Mrs. Abernathy's sister ' and family, Mr. and Mrs. Theron Mason, and friends in the area, are re turning to their home in Downey, Calif. Mrs. Leona Sheppard of Glendale, Ore., is convalesc ing at the home of her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs, Earl Sheppard of Shady Cove, after undergoing surgery. She re entered the Osteopathic hos pital for blood transfusions this past week end but is ex pected to return to the Shep pards to convalesce. . Sheppard's brother and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Norvell Sheppard and daughter, Deb bie, of Los Angeles, were visitors over the Labor Day week end as well as the Shep pard's daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Littlefield from Barstow, Calif. Bill is stationed at Camp Irwin, Calif., and Carole is employ ed as a secretary under Civil Service at the Marine base. Linda Sheppard of Kines Creek, Ore., niece of Earl Sheppard, was also a visitor at the Sheppard home over the week end. Mrs. Clara Schrader of Amesbury, Mass., is visiting with her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Trusty of Elk Creek, Trail. The two sisters and their brother, Mr. W. H. Fraley of Ashland held a reunion as it had been 55 years since Mrs. Schrader had seen either Mrs. Trusty or Mr. Fraley. Mrs. Schrader is a retired registered nurse. The Shady Cove Garden club will hold the first meet ing of the new season on Mon day, Sept. 8, starting at 12:30 at Our Lady of Fatima hall in Shady Cove. Co-hostesses for the event will be Mrs. Ed Houston and Mrs. Edgar Vanderlip. Plans will be made for a fall garden show to be held at the hall. the date of which is to be set at the meeting. Full details on the show will appear later in this column. Mrs. Albert (Helen) Ander son of Shady Cove has been named as representative for the Elemin Food Supplement company of Berkeley, Calif. Their product is a food sup plement containing vitamins and minerals obtained through a natural organic source. Donna and Diane Ells of Prospect spent Friday visit ing with their friend, Amber Wood, of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Chet Pfluke Lid children. Jeanne Marie and Jeffrey Michael, are on triri to Canton. Ohio, where they are visiting with Mr. Pfluke's parents and relatives. Mrs. Pfluke is the daughter of the Ernie Segessenmans. Mr. and Mrs. David Hoppe and baby of Eureka, Calif., have been spending their va cation visiting with Mrs. Hoppe's parents, Mr. nd Mrs. Homer Buttr'am of Shady Cove. Hoppe is a photograph er for the Eureka newspapers. JoAnn Cooper of Shady Cove is now employed by Dr. Fosdal, a dentist in Medford. Mr. and Mrs. John Jantzer of Grants Pass and Mr. and Mrs. M. Madsen of Central Point were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kelley of Shady Cove this past week. Jantzer, Mrs. Madsen and Mrs. Kelley are brother and sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Goode and son, Ralph, of Shady Cove, made a trip to Bend, Ore., over the Labor Day week end, where they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Herb May field and made a trip to Glass butte collecting rock. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Shea of Mountain View, Calif., former residents and former owners of the Cove Variety store in Shady Cove, spent the Labor Day week end in the area visiting friends. To gether with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Blair, they visited Mrs. Montie Gilhousen of the Rogue River lodge, with Mrs. Bill Massey, of Trail, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Segessenman, and Mrs. Carroll Watson of Shady Cove and many others. They have a rug cleaning business in Mountain View. Ore., Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Clark of Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Friedell of Long Beach, who are touring with their trailer through the north, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Le Brun of Berkeley. While visiting the Turners, Mr. and Mrs. Le Brun cele brated their joint birthdays which occur on the same day. They also made a trip to Huckleberry gap on a berry picking expedition. - , Mr and Mrs. Keith Schock and baby daughter, Diane, of Modesto, Calif., have been visiting with Mrs.- Schock's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Clark of Big Butte Creek. Trail over the week end. .". , ' House guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Scott and family of Trail have been Mr. and Mrs. Erni Widner of Sierra Madre, Calif. Mrs. Widner and Carl are cousins. The Widner's are distributors of Nutrilite vitamin products of Buena Park, Calif. This com pany has its own farms where they grow alfalfa, parsley and water cress from which this food supplement is made. Mrs. Scott has accepted the ap pointment as distributor for Jackson county for Nutrilite vitamins. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cassal of Trail are reported to have been considerably shaken and bruised in a car accident last Sunday, Aug. 24. Their car was a total wreck, and they are without transportation for the time being. Mrs. Montana Gilhousen of the Rogue River lodge, Trail, has resigned her position in Los Angeles and returned to the lodge. Al Gilhousen stayed in Los Angeles, where he is working for the Vinnell cor poration under Rex Milligan. Mrs. Gilhousen's mother, Mrs. Earl Schmandt of Darby, Mont., and her aunt, Mrs. Carriebelle Heacock, of Olym pia. Wash., have been visiting. Other guests at the lodge have been Ray Cowin of Se attle, former resident of Med ford, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Stone of Pine Castle, Fla., and H. C. Fuhrmann and his mother, Mrs. Ann Fuhrmann of Pasa dena, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Milligan and sons, Timmy, Danny and Johnny of Whit tier, Calif., left for home the first part of the week. Mrs. Milligan and the boys have spent most of the summer here. During their stay Mr. and Mrs. Milligan and boys were guests for an evening of music and dancing at the home of Mr. and- Mrs. Carroll Watson of Shady Cove. Mrs. Johnie Minor and daughters, Louella and Shir ley, and Mrs. Buster Akin and children have returned ti Shady Cove from Remote, Ore., and will enter their children in the Shady Cove school for the school year. Buster and Johnny intend to stay in Remote and--log this winter. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Decker and baby of Portland spent the Labor Day week end visit ing at the home of Mr. Deck er's mother, Mrs. Frances Miller, of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Gray of Los Angeles have been guests of Mr. and Mrs. Art Hutcheson of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bill ington of Colfax, Calif., and Mrs. Emily Carlsen of Rose ville, Calif., have been house guests of Dr. and Mrs. David Morgan of Shady Cove. The Billington's are . parents of Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Carl sen is her sister. . Mrs. Milton George and daughter, Arlene, of Santa Monica, Calif., have been house guests of Mrs. George's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Powell of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Powell attended the wedding of their other niece. Miss Peggy George to Darrell John son, held at the First Metho dist church in Santa Maria, Aug. 16. Mrs. Edna Hunt of Encino, Calif., is visiting with her granddaughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Ander son of Mathews guard station. The sympatny of the com munity is extended to Joe Waltz and family on the death of Waltz's father, Mr. A. Waltz, following a long illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m.- at the church in Murphy with Hull and Hull Funeral home of Grants Pass, in charge. Mr. Waltz's daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Watson, were here from Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Axtell MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford. Monte Axtell and Neil Dusen berry, both of Trail, are tak ing a week's vacation trip to Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Francis and baby boy of Trail have moved to South Dakota, where Francis will be en gaged in farming with his father. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Kyle of La Canada, Calif., have been house guests of Mrs. Kyle's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Barrett of Shady Cove. Mr. Ray Carnes and son, Nelson,- of San Fernando, Calif., were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Pfeifer of Shady Cove. St. Martin's Guild will hold the regular monthly meeting Monday evening, Sept. 8, at the home of Mrs. Max Hawks of Shady Cove, with the meet ing starting at 7:30. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Staley of Emporia, Kan., has been visiting with Mri. Staley's brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sattler of Shady Cove. Other house guests of the Sattler's have been Mr. Sattler's nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. Dean L. Staley and son, Ronnie, of Los An geles. Guests on Saturday were Mrs. Jack Huffman of Eagle Point and Mr. Merriott of Los Angeles, who is the custodian of the Pico Arlington Christ ian church there. MSgt. and Mrs. Frank Selto of Spokane, Wash., are the parents of a baby girl born at the Fairchild hospital and weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces. The baby girl, who has been named Elizabeth, is the couple's fifth child and second girl. Sgt. Selto is ROTC Instructor at Gonzaga college. Mrs. Agnes Hubbell of Trail is the maternal grandmother. Jack Price of San Diego is home to spend the week end with his wife and family at Trail before returning to San Diego, where he expects to be shipped overseas. Pat Gusland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gusland of Shady Cove, returned home Saturday evening from Hono lulu, Hawaii, where she had gone with the Hardell Pub lishing company. . Mrs. Wesley Olson and sons, Jim, Rod and Mike of San Francisco have spent all sum mer visiting with Mrs. Olson's mother, Mrs. Varnice Hinkle of Trail. Varnice Hinkle has returned home from the Mer chant Marine service and has applied for overseas construc tion work with Morrison Knudson company. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Dickin son of Shady , Cove have moved to eastern Oregon and have rented their home to Mr, and Mrs. Lennis Smith and family of Shady Cove. The Smith's had been living in the Ward house in the Cove. Bob Vincent and son, Kenny, and Carroll Watson and son, Lane, of Shady Cove, made a trip to Virgin Valley Nev., over the Labor Day week end on a combination rock collecting, Indian arti fact, hunting and fishing trip. Brig. Gen. and Mrs. Peter Vachon of Shady Cove have returned to their summer cabin . "Tottering on the Rogue," after spending the past several weeks in Cali fornia. They plan to be here until the first part of October. Their granddaughter, Step hanie Wood, of Menlo Park, Calif., accompanied them up here for a 10-day visit. Her mother, Mrs. Dick Wood, teaches ballet, tap and acro batic dancing in Menlo Park. Stephanie was a dinner guest and stayed over night with Sherj Watson of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Trusty of Elk Creek, Trail have re ceived word of the death of Mr. Trusty's nephew, Clyde Beevers, in Richmond, Calif. Mr. Beevers was born in the area but moved away while still a small child.
