Mayor Ernie Cooper pre sided. Following a discussion of the curfew issue, the council voted to have the city attorney draw up an ordinance suggest ing the curfew hour be 9 p.m., that it cover ages up to and including 19 years, that the parents of violating children be held responsible, that fines for violation to be assessed on parents be not less than $5 and not more than $100, and that imprisonment in the city and not more than 20 days days. "The council may hold a special session to consider pas sage . of curfew ordinance when it is drafted. Friday, Sept. 26, has been set by the council as city "clean up day." On that day, city employees will pick up and haul away for burning, burnable trash placed on the street where it can be readily reached by the truck. City officials point ed out that materials sucbas rocks, dirt, glass, metal or garbage will not be picked up. Granted Vacation - Police Chief Floyd Taylor was granted a vacation period during deer hunting season: The public utilities commis I sioner, in a' letter to the city, acknowledged receipt of pe- ; titions from Gold Hill on the telephone matter. On Sept. 9, in Salem, a preliminary hear . ing on the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company rate change request will be held. Further hearing will be an nounced later, according to the commissioner's letter. A reply from Southern Pa cific railroad company stated an investigation is under way .regarding railroad cars .being -parked too close to streets Gold Hill. This problem has been the concern of many per sons because of hazards in volved when the view is blocked. - Communications were read from the civil defense and highway department. The civil defense announced that monitoring equipment should arrive in October.' The letter from the highway department was relative to the accumulat ing of state tax street funds for more than two years. The problem of drainage on West Second ave. was given further consideration by the council, which voted to in stall storm arain on xne norm side. Petitions for nominating candidates for city election on November 4, are being circu lated for Fred Lester, Fred Lewis, Olaf Lokken and Ken dal Dufur for councilman, each for a term of four years, and for Milton Steinmetz for mayor and Ferd Jones for recorder-treasurer each for two year terms. J. ioo. i Mental Health Group Organizing Family Counselling Service The Jackson County Mental Health committee has been holding frequent meetings rec ently to organize a temporary Family Counselling Service using volunteer workers as counsellors. The purpose would be to demonstrate the value of such a service in the hope that the community will support a similar program with a paid staff. ' It is hoped that the service may be started within a few weeks, committee members said. One part of the Mental Health committee under the chairmanship of Miss Celia Walker is working on the de tailed plans of securing coun sellors, arranging for a time and place to carry on the work and other details. The other part of the com mittee, with Mrs. L. E. Gus tison as subcommittee .chair man is charged with giving the community information about the services, both be fore and after it is established. Present Plan The present plan is the re sult of at least three years of study by the committee. It has heard speakers with an expert knowledge of what has been done and can be done. It conducted an intensive study by sending out questionnaires to professional groups in the community. This showed con clusively that all professional people 'are constantly aware of the need of people for help concerning marriage difficul ties, marriage planning, work adjustments and many other problems, the committe noted. The committee feels that a more complete demonstration of the need can be made by setting up a service on a temporary basis. Although this temporary service plans to use volunteer workers they are to be carefully selected and screened and will all be people who have had training and experience in counselling. The volunteer workers also will work closely under ' the supervision and guidance of Dr. Harry Danielson, psy- rchiatrist. Further details will be an nounced as soon as available. A list of available speakers also will be given so that in terested groups may have an opportunity to learn more about the project, members said. Vels May Re-Enfer Training Courses A recent Veterans adminis tration interpretation permits several thousand Oregon vet erans' of the Korean conflict of service to a- reconsidera tion of their applications for re-entrance into education or training following an inter ruption, S. T. Brannock, of ficer in charge, Medford Vet erans, administration office, said today. . , The new regulation applies to veterans who have inter rupted their training for more than one year and whose de limiting date has passed. It does not extend the delimiting date for original entrance in to an education or training program, which is three years from date of release from ac tive duty, Brannock said. Veterans who have been de nied re-entrance because in terruption was for more than one year may apply for recon sideration of their application, Brannock stated. All veter ans applying for reconsidera tion should include a complete statement of reasons for in terruption with their appli cations, he said. Coordinator Named In School Office Robert E. Lawrence, 300 Ardmore ave., Medford, has been appointed elementary curriculum coordinator in the Jackson county school super intendent's office, according to Alf B. Mekvold, county school superintendent. A teacher and elementary school principal, Lawrence will assume the position im mediately. His duties will cqnsist of elementary class room supervision, work with the districts on school stand ardization programs, inservice training, enforcment of school compulsory attendance j laws, and supervision of curriculum and textbook study commit tees. Lawrence is a graduate of Southern Oregon college and recently 1 has been attending the University of Oregon, working toward an advanced degree.
