mmm RAIDING THE MAINLAND on a patrol mission toward and artillery have disrupted Quemoy Island. Ordinance Outlining City Traffic Engineer Responsibilities of Med ford's traffic engineer, a new position now held by Public Works Director Vernon Thorpe, were outlined in an ordinance adopted by the city counccil last night. . Essentially, it grants great er authority to the engineer in attending to routine mat ters of traffic regulation, such as erecting signals and signs, establishing and making load' ing zones and designating cross-walks. It grants him, in addition, the power to make and en force "emergency and experi mental" regulations for peri ods of 30 days or less. Leas Approved The council approved a 10 years lease to Carl E. Wimber ly Jr., of land at the Medford airport for erection and main tenance of a private airplane hangar, the annual rate to be $24.50. It alsd authorized an ex change of land on Barneburg hill between the city and the Mont Crest Development com pany to provide a water stand pipe site at the highest pos sible elevation in order .'to serve properties atop the hill. The council approved Med- Bonanza Airlines Chicago " (UPD The Air Line Pilots association today announced that pilots of Bon anza Airlines have called a strike effective one minute to midnight local time, Sept. 8. C. N. Sayen, president of AFL-CIO pilots union, said a cooling off period required under the Railway Labor Act expired Sept. 1 with no ac tion attempted by the airline. The pilots' contract with Bonanza expired Dec. 31, 1857, and negotiations, under way since Oct. 29, 1957, broke down Jan. 21, 1958. The National Mediation board withdrew from the matter Aug. 1. after failing to make any headway. Duff said the estimated cost to the city would be $1,375 plus maps which might cost between $250 and $300. The council asked for prep aration of an ordinance grant ing an easement to the Siski you Memorial park for a wa ter pipe line. The request for the easement came from Dr. R. P. Mortensen, director of the park. The council referred to the city planning commission a re quest for a variance to allow continued location of a house trailer on a lot on Park Place No. 5. The request was made by Dean Marcum in a letter to the city. Marcum claims a hardship situation, and reports the city . building inspector has insisted he conform with the building code or remove the trailer. Walkout Called covering pilots of competi tor scheduled airlines." Bonanza has headquarters in Las Vegas, and employs about 70 pilots. .It serves 23 cities in Arizona, Nevada, Utah and California. Sayen said developments in the dispute would be an nounced periodically in order to allow travelers . to make plans accordingly. He said the situation, however, ap peared extremely critical. Truckers, Union Enter Third Day Of Negotiations Washington -GJPD- Negotia tions entered . the third day between teamster officials and trucking company representa tives today in an effort to settle a 25-day-old teamsters strike in 11 western states. , Teamster President James R. Hoffa said negotiators made "quite a bit of progress" Thursday during the talks. Hoffa said the tie-up has created "knotty" problems for union and management nego tiators. But he said quite a few solutions had been reached and negotiators hoped to reach final agreement by the week end. ' The negotiators, who held their first session here Wednesday night were gener ally optimistic but offered no details to newsmen. About 100,000 long-line, city pickup, and delivery truckers and 250 major trucking companies are involved in the strike which followed 18 weeks of negoti ation. Hoffa suggested holding meetings here after an at tempt to reach agreement failed two weeks ago in San Diego. The union is demanding so called "parity" treatment of all locals in the 11 states. San Francisco Bay area teamsters had received higher wages than others in the past and had agred to an even better contract. San Joaquin and Sac ramento Valley locals struck in rebellion against accepting anything less. . Employers in the western states decided that a strike against one was a . strike against all and the stoppage spread. . Art Linkletter Has Close Call San Diego - IDPD - Art Link letter nearly was involved in a helicopter crash Thursday at the climax of his national ly televised "House Party" program aboard the carrier Kearsarge. " The smiling television per sonality waved goodbye to his audience and climbed in the helicopter which started to rise and then dipped dan gerously toward the flight deck. Someone had forgotten to untie one of the mooring lines tieing the 'copter to the car rier's deck. The Navy pilot felt a slight tug as he eased up to takeoff and set the craft down. "I wasn't aware of the dan ger," Linkletter said. "All I felt was a slight tilting to the right. Then we righted our selves and landed." Viewers looking in across the nation saw . the copter right itself an instant before the program was blacked out. No announcement of the near mishap was made at the end of the show. The 52 girls entered in the 31st running of the beauty classic are so shut off from the rest of the world during their six days in Atlantic City that their own fathers have to make special appointments just to say "hello." Whispered Information Miss Indiana's father could not even tell her that her slip showed during a pageant re hearsal. He had to whisper the critical information to her official chaperone, who then told her to make the necessary adjustments. Even their mothers, who in many cases come along as chaperones, are not allowed to be with the girls most of the time. Their full-time bodyguards, censors, advisers and rooters are Atlantic City housewives, hand-picked for the job. Most of them have been shepherd ing Miss America contestants through their paces for years, and know all the angles, the main one being to keep re porters and photographers away from their charges when ever possible.
