Mill -Hurls 2-1 VScfory (Over Chicago Cubs Dn FSrst (Game of BDoubOeheaider United Press International Bob Buhl's sudden and amazing return to pitching stardom made it more likely than ever today the Milwau kee Braves will be favored over the New York Yankees in this year's World Series. While the Yankees, who suffered their first "losing month" in Casey Stengel's 10 year managerial reign during August, stumbled into Sep tember still in search of start ing pitchers. Buhl returned to action Monday and hurled an impressive 2-1 triumph over the Chicago Cubs in the first game of a doubleheader. Buhl, an - 18-game winner two straight seasons, had been on the shelf since May 13 with a sore shoulder but he came "all the way back" in one stunning game. Buhl's victory, which adds him to the long list of Braves' starting pitchers including Lew Burdette, Warren Spahn, Carlton Willey and Joey Jay, made unhappy reading for Stengel, who still is looking for somebody to back up Bob Turley, his 20-game winner Prain Sox Win National! Tourney With -7 Final-' Wichita, Kan. - (LTD - The Drain, Ore., Black Sox Mon day night won the National Baseball Congress tourna ment with an 8-7 victory over the Alpine, Tex. Cowboys. Jim Pifher singled to drive in a run and break 'a 7-7 dead lock for Drain in the top of the ninth inning as it became .the first Oregon club to win the national. Right - hander Wes Stock was the winning pitcher, go ing all the way, although he gave up 13 hits. The Oregon club made a great come-from-behind effort with four runs in the eighth. Three of them crossed on a home' run by Ellis Olson. Swim Marks Shattered Oswego - (UPD - Two state AAU swim records were shat tered here Monday afternoon in the second day of the Lake Oswego Invitational swim meet. Ken Webb, Multnomah Ath letic Club, Portland, broke the state AAJJ 50 meter boys' 12 and under butterfly record of 39.0 doing the distance in 35.9. Another MAC swimmer, Carolyn Wood, swam the 50 meter butterfly girl's 12 and under in 34.8, to top the pre vious record of 38.1. Oregon Ducks End First Day's Drills Eugene -IEPD- The Oregon Ducks completed their first full day of workouts Monday here in preparation for the opening football game of the season against Idaho by run ning a mile and closing the day with brief but spirited scrimmage session. Coach Len Casanova said he was reasonably satisfied with the condition of the 47 gridders, and said he thought they .were set physically for a rugged three week's work before the Sept. 20 opener. . The Braves' 9-3 second game loss to the Cubs, in which Bob Rush was battered, didn't make things any bright er for Stengel. The Yankee skipper, after seeing Bobby Shantz beaten by the Red Sox, 4-2, in their opener, got a 4-2 win in the nightcap from Duke Maas, who hardly fig ures now as a series pitcher. In the other holiday twin bills: Detroit swept two from Kansas City, 7-4 and 5-1; Bal timore defeated Washington, 2-0 and 10-1; Cleveland beat the Chicago White Sox twice, 6-5 and 7-1; the San Francis co Giants took second place in the National league by sweep ing Los Angeles, 8-6 and then 6-5 in a 16-inning thriller; Pittsburgh dropped to third by losing to Philadelphia, 9-0, after winning the opener, 5-2; and St. Louis beat Cincinnati, 9-3, after losing the opener, 1-0. After Ernie Banks singled home the Cubs' only run off Buhl, the Braves got their two runs in the fourth on four singles and a walk. Then the Silverton Team Recalled Alpine scored three runs in the bottom of tjie eighth on a home run by Tommy Snow with two runners aboard. Wimp Hastings sacrificed and was knocked in by Pifher's single. The best finish of an Ore gon club in the tourney until this year was by Silverton, Ore., in 1939 with third place. Drain won seven straight games in the double elimina tion tournament to clinch the title this year. Thirty-one teams semi-pro champs from various states opened the national tourney Aug. 15. Hastings Stars , The victory climaxed . a great effort from the north Douglas county team which is .composed mostly of college players. It is managed by Ray Stratton, vice principal and baseball and basketball coach at Drain High school. Jim O'Rourke, Drain out fielder from Santa Clara, was named the - tourney's most valuable player even though he didn't even make the all- star team named earlier. . Hastings, former Oregon hoop and baseball ace, made a great stop with two out in 'the ninth with a man on sec ond and Jhrew out his man to end the game. Hastings hit .429 in the tournament and O'Rourke had a .485 average. Pifher hit .333. Harold Woolley, Drain lum berman, is chief sponsor of the team, which won 41 and lost 5 this year. OSC Has 54 Turn Out For First Drills Corvallis - (UPD Oregon State's opening practice ses sions drew out. 54 candidates Monday as the Beavers ran through morning and after noon drills. Nineten lettermen filed in from the 1957 squad and three letter-winners from previous seasons. One transfer answered the call, end Len Nikolai from West Contra Costa junior college. Cubs took the nightcap, blast ing Rush out in a four-run third inning. Banks led the 11-hit Cub attack with three singles. Beats Yanks Again Ted Bowsfield, Red Sox rookie southpaw, beat the Yankees for the third time in three weeks in their opener, holding the American League leaders to four hits. Maas, a Yankee "second line" hurler also hurled a four-hitter in the nightcap but the Yanks needed two unearned runs to win. Willie Mays five hits, in cluding his 26th homer, led the Giants to their opening win. Mays also homered in the nightcap, but that was almost forgotten in late-inning dra matics. Bob Schmidt of the Giants homered in the ninth to tie the score at 4-4. After the Dodgers scored one in the 16th, Whitey Lockman hom ered to tie the score at 5-5 and then Ray.Jablonski scored all the way from first with the winning run on errors by Carl Furillo and John Roseboro. The Pirates won their open er behind Vern Law's six-hit pitching but ran into the "old" Curt Simmons in the nightcap. The Phil soutpaw yielded only four hits and fanned seven batters. Mizell Pilches Shutout Vinegar Bend Mizell gave four hits and nine walks but still pitched a shutout for the Cards in, their opener to snap the Redlegs' six-game winning streak. Then the Redlegs got hot again with 16 hits, includ ing four by Smoky Burgess, to win the nightcap. ' A three-run homer in the opener by Minnie Minoso and a similar blow in the nightcap by Vic Power sparked the In dians to their sweep over Chi cago, cutting the Sox' second place lead to one game over Boston. A five-run fifth inning car ried Al Cicotte to victory in the Tigers' opening game. Frank Boiling, who scored two runs in that one, slammed two homers in the nightcap as Paul Foytack went the route to win on a four-hitter. Southpaws Jack Harshman, who gave up four hits, and Billy O'Dell, who scattered 11 hits, pitched route-going wins for the Orioles to keep thenT in fourth place. C HECK TICKET :M(DWX ' FOR .FREE -.FORD AverSSI Powers San PSego To 6-5 Win Over Phoenix United Press International Earl Averill powered a solo home run in the top of the j seventh inning Monday' night to give San Diego a 6-5 win over Phoenix in the opener of a four-game set that will either leave the Padres in or out of the running for the Pacific Coast, league cham pionship. Averili's blast, his 25th of the season, turned out to be the deciding run in a ; tight battle between the PCL lead ers. The loss cut the Giants' margin over the Californians to IV2 games. Salt Lake shaded Vancou ver by the same 6-5 score, leaving the fading Mounties 4Vz games back of Phoenix: Jim McDaniel of the Bees and Vancouver's Jim Dyck both slammed bases -loaded hom ers, but Ken Toothman belted a solo four-bagger in the fifth to give the Hive the edge. George Freese dominated the show at Spokane as the hard-hitting Portland third sacker slammed a solo homer in both ends of a twinbill to give the Beavers a sweep. Portland took the opener, 1-0, then blanked the Indians Giants Dn Yet With San Franisco - ITJPD - Don't count the Giants out of that wiennant race yet. They moved back to within IV2. games of Milwaukee Mon day by sweeping a double header from Los Angeles, 8-6 and 6-5, in typical Giant fashion. Willie Mays went five for five in the morning swatfest and socked a homer which put San Francisco ahead to stay. Then the Giants pulled off their 21st "last chance" win of the season in the night cap when Ray Jablonski thundered home from first base in the 16th inning on errors by catcher John Rose boro and right fielder Carl Furillo. "How many games are we out of first place?" Manager Bill Rigney asked afterward, his eyes glistening. "Well we still can catch 'em!" The club operts another road tour in Los Angeles to night where Ramon Monzant (6-8) faces sidewinder Don Drysdale of the Dodgers (10-11). Monday afternoon's hys terics were produced this way: The Fireworks Furillo smashed a double off southpaw Mike McCor mick in the Dodgers' half of the 16th to chase in Gino Cimoli, who had singled, with the tie breaker and make the score 5-4. Wright Wins Turner Open Burneyville, Okla. (UPD Mickey Wright finished with a blistering seven-under-par 71 Monday to win the Opie Turner Open golf tournament with a 54-hole total of" 222. The victory earned her $2,082 in prize money. Louise Suggs finished sec ond at 227. Clifford Ann Creed, 19-year old Opelousas, La. sharpshoot er who led the first round was the only amateur to finish among the top scorers. She was 11th with a 236 total. Betty Dodd came in for $750 third-place money with a -229. i ORIOLES BUY PLAYERS Baltimore, Md. (UPD The Baltimore Orioles bought first baseman Bob Hale, who was hitting .308, and outfielder Chuck Certel, hitting .317, from their Louisville farm club of the American Associa tion Monday. Riverside and S. Central NEXT FREE FORD OCT. again in the nightcap, 5-0. Sacramento and Seattle split a pair, the Rainiers tak ing the first game, 3-0, and the Solons winning the seven inning finale by the same score. Lemon Wins Bob Lemon came on for San Diego in the third inning and turned in a tight, five inning relief stint to pick up his second PCL win of the year since coming down from Cleveland in June with 'arm trouble. Dick Bradowski hurled the last two frames for the Padres. Averill also doubled home Dave Pope in the four-run Padre fifth inning. Pope had sent two runners across the plate with a triple. Bill Wil son drove in three runs for the Giants. Both clubs had 10 hits. Lemon provided the game's most dramatic moment when he struck out Dusty Rhodes with the bases jammed and two out in the seventh. It was Rhodes who smashed a three run pinch hit home run off Lemon in the opening game of the-1954 World Series that sent New York off to four League Race ItoubleheaderWIn whacked his second homer of the season high and far into the right field stands to tie the game. Jablonski legged out a bunt single then took off for second as pinch hitter Ruben Gomez tapped another perfect bunt in front of the plate. Catcher John Roseboro threw the ball into right field after Gomez was safely across for a hit. Jablonski, working under a good head of steam, swept into third base then raced home as Furillo's poor throw to the plate bounced past the Dodger catcher for the second error on the play. That sent a total of 19,800 But in stepped Whitey Lockman for the Giants and Fireball Wins Race Darlington, S. C. -(UPD-Glen (Fireball) Roberts joined fel low veteran Curtis Turner to day as the only winner . of both featured stock car races at Darlington Raceway. The 29-year-old fireball, from Daytona Beach, beat a talented field Monday in the Southern 500. His 1957 Chevrolet took the lead on the 169th lap and for the next 195 turns around the mile and three-eighths banked asphalt oval Fireball was in charge. v The average speed of 102. 590 miles per hour topped the record of 100.100 set by Speedy Thompson in 1957. Roberts won the inaugural running of the Rebel 300 mile race here in 1957 but al though a perennial favorite -the Southern 500 had here tofore eluded him. One of five drivers to participate in all nine 500s to date, Roberts best prior finish was second in 1950. Physicals Set For Junior High Grid Aspirants Physical examinations for aspiring junior high school football players will be given on two nights this week. McLoughlin players will re port to Medford Clinic, 1025 East Main St., on Thursday evening. Hedrick gridders to go on Friday. Time is 7 p.m. on each occasion. Ron Kildoo came on for Salt Lake in the ninth to preserve the win. McDaniel's homer was his 30th of the season. Freese slammed his 32nd homer to score the only run in the opener at Spokane, 'then came back with his 33rd in the nightcap to highlight a 12-hit Beaver assault on three Indian pitchers. Frank Kel lert supplemented Portland's attack with two hits in the first tilt and four in the sec ond to finish the day with six for seven. Vic Lombardi five - hitted the Tribe in the opener and Al Lary came back wjth a four hitter in the finale! The losses ran Spokane's losing streak to four straight. Bud Watkins turned in a four - hitter in the second game at Seattle to give the Solons a split for the day. Steve Bilko also homered for 'L.A. with a man on. The loss went to left-hand er Johnny Podres, the third Dodger pitcher to work. It was a tough one as he twice had gotten out of the inning without a score after San Francisco had loaded the bases in the 14th and 15th. Mike McCormick pitched two innings and picked up his 11th win. The breakfast session was a free-swinging affair marked by 23 hits. Mays was red hot in this one, batting 1000. and belting a home run into the left field seats with none aboard. It proved to be the winning run of the game. However, Schmidt doubled in two more runs during a seventh inning uprising. Gor don Jones went five to get his second win while Clem Labine was the loser. He now is 6-6. Johnny Klippstein beaned Daryl Spencer of the Giants in the fifth inning of the first game but x-rays proved nega tive and he was scheduled to leave today with the club for Los Angeles.
