Sunday, August 31, 1958 (Giants Take 3-2 Win From Dodgers San Francisco - fLTB - Jim Davenport, whose specialty is the pop fly, smashed two home runs against his "cous ins" from Los Angeles Satur day to lead the Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers in the first game of a day night doubleheader. The light-hitting third base man raised his total to 10 for the season and five of them at the exepnse of Los Angeles hurling as he connected for bases-empty blows in the first and third innings. Ruben Gomez, who won his eighth of the season with an assist from Al Worthington, had a three-hit shutout on the fire going into the ninth. But then he gave up a single to John Roseboro, and Duke Snider followed with' his 12th home run of the season into the leftfield stands to cut the Giants' lead to one run. San Francisco made short work of Danny McDevitt in the first Inning after the southpaw had fanned Felipe Alou to open the frame. Dav enport followed with a homer into the leftfield stands and another run came across as Willie Mays tripled to right and scored on Jackie Brandt's double to left center. McDevitt, who has failed to go the distance in five life time starts against the Giants, left the game with his sixth defeat against two victories. Babe Birrer took over for him and in the third inning gave up Davenport's second home run.'a 400-foot smash over the left center field barrier. The teams then knocked off for dinner and were sched uled to resume here tonight with Johnny Podres (12-10) going against the Giants' Mike McCormick (9-7) in a battle of southpaws. RUNNING THE GANTLET This drill by Medford High school footballers is termed "running the gantlet." Backs grab the ball and run between linemen who are holding dummies. It is an anti-fumble drill. At Physical Exams For Junior High Boys This Week Arrangements for prospec tive McLoughlin and Hedrick Junior High football players to take physical examinations have been announced by Lee Ragsdale, director of physi cal education for the Med ford schools. McLoughlin players are to report to the Medford clinic, 1025 East Main st., at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4. Hedrick boys will have their physicals at the same hour on Friday, Sept. 5 arid at the same place. Each boy planning to play football must have an exami nation and must return the form signed by the physi cian. Signature of the parent or legal guardian, granting permission to play, should also be on the form. These forms will be filed at the school office. A nominal fee of $1 (will be charged for each boy's exam ination. He should have the money with him when he is examined. Ragsdale also stated that all players must have ob tained their student body cards before practicing. Play ers are covered by insurance when the student bodyfee is paid. Football equipment will be issued to. players at the end of next week. Willie Mays Strikes Out San Francisco -flJPD-Willie Mays was subjected to some mild needling Saturday by the Los Angeles Dodgers for taking a called third strike Friday night as a pinch hit ter. "Hey, here's the only guy ever struck out and got his name in the headlines for it," the Dodgers' Rube Walker called out while the Giant's centerfielder was taking his turn at batting practice. Mavs. after coming out of the cage, merely laughed and yelled over to Don'Drysdale of the Dodgers who had fan ned him, "Hey, why don t you get that stuff over?" "Well, you can argue with the umpire," Drysdale an swered good naturedly. Mays looked at the third strike in the seventh inning Friday night with two men on hase. (UPD -Veteran Vic Seixas, playing from memories of 25 years on the tournament trail, scor ed the first major upset of the U. S. Amateur Tennis championships Saturday with a first-round 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 8-10, 8-6 triumph over seventh- seeded Kurt Nielsen of Den mark. Seixas, a 35-year-old Phila- delphian who no longer is seeded after giving up steady tournament play to enter busi ness, made a triumphant re turn to the center court where he won the national title in 1954. These hunters Game commission personnel delivered 58 sage grouse to the' British Columbia Game department on Aug. 21 in"a return exchange for the big horn sheep received from them in 1954. The sage grouse were trapped in Lake and Malheur counties using mainly traps constructed of fish seine with long wings extending from the mouth of the trap. These were placed in alfalfa fields where the grouse were accus tomed to feed. Restless Wind-Takes Photo Win By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Restless Wind , defeated Winsome Winner in a photo finish Saturday to capture the $164,725 Washington; Futurity at Arlington Park, richest two-year-old race ever run in Illinois Restless Wind equalled the record of 1:09 35for the six furlong event as hevwon by a neck. The time was 45 of a second short of the track rec ord held by Hill Gail. In other Saturday feature races, Outer Space won the $29,600 Vagrancy Handicap at Belmont Park and Tudor Era triumphed in the $28,593 Olympic Handicap at Atlantic City. Restless Wind, owned by Llangollen farm, carried top weight of 122 pounds, the same impost toted by Swoon's Son when he set the event record in 1955. It was Restless Wind's seventh win in 10 starts and earned a net purse of $112,225. He paid $5.00, $3.20 and $2.80. Winsome Winner, a 64-1 shot, returned $39.00 and $14.80. Demobilize, who finished three and one half lengths behind, paid $6.20. Mrs. Gerald S. Smith's Out er Space moved through the pack in the stretch to score a length victory over Mile Dianne in the Vagrancy 'cap. A length further back was Alanesian, coupled with Out er Space in the . betting. Searching, the favorite, fin ished fourth. Jockey Eldon Nelson found a hole in. the pack while rounding into the homestretch and guided Outer Space from fifth to the lead.
