2A MA"- TRIBUNE, MadforJ, r 1 fa v Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Haines Underwood (Matson photo) Underwood-Cooney Rites Held in Berkeley Chapel Mr. .and Mrs. Douglas Haines Underwood, married August 21 in Berkeley, Calif., are in Medford to spend the Labor day week end with Mrs. Underwood's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Cooney, 717 Dakota avenue. The newlyweds are en route U Walla Walla, Wash., where Mr. Underwood will be on the faculty of Whitman col lege as associate professor of mathematics. The Underwood - Cooney rites took, place at Chapel of the Great Commission, Pa League Plans Show Medford Junior Service league will hold a fall fash ion show Thursday and Fri day, September 11 and 12 at the Rogue Valley Country club. The show, to begin at 12:30 p.m. both days, is open to the public, "Back io school" will be the theme of the event and proceeds are to go to the 1 e a g u e's kindergarten for hard of hearing children. Mrs. Robert C. Taylor Is general chairman of the show and will be assisted by Mrs. Robert M. Turner, co-chairman. Mrs. Fred A. Lewis is in charge of decorations, Mrs. Eugene V. Meyerding will plan the menu and Mrs. Rob bert R. Dickey will handle the invitations. Commentators will be Mrs. Sam Richardson and Mrs. Don Wood. 4 Family Here Mr. and Mrs. Melvin H. Hass and their granddaughter, Carol Hass, Glendale, Calif., are here to visit Haas son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund E. Haas and children, Morgan, Elizabeth, Patricia and Grant, 1615 Crown avenue. The visitors will leave Tuesday for the return trip. They made the trip up" by car, coming up the coast route. Walker of First Methodist church, Oakland, Calif., offi ciated for the evening cere mony. The bride wore a gown of white satin and tulle with Sa brina neckline scalloped with Chantilly lace. Her finger-tip length veil was held by a cap of pearls and she carried white roses with stephanotis and bouvardia. Miss Elizabeth Gilbert, Salem, was maid 1 of honor and other attendants were Miss Jacqueline Chalmers, Berkeley, and Mrs. Richard Underwood, the bridegroom's sister-in-law from Western Springs, 111. Their frocks of pink chiffon over taffeta were ballerina style and were worn with pink net head dresses. They carried deep pink roses and ivy. Mr. Cooney gave his daughter in marriage, and Richard Underwood, Western Springs, was best man or his brother. The bride's brother, William J. Cooney Jr., Med ford, and David Underwood, the bridegroom's brother from Hiram, Ohio, seated the guests. Mrs. Alan Pierce was solo ist. White gladiolus and stock decorated the church. Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Chris- tensen, uncle and aunt of the bride, were hosts for the re ception, held at their home in Oakland. The bride's mother wore a blue lace gown with matching accessories and or chid corsage. The bride groom's mother wore a beige knit dress and orchid cor sage. For traveling the bride wore a dark blue wool jersey dress with corsage of white roses. She is a graduate of Medford High school and Willamette university and at tended the University of Cali fornia. She is a member of Delta Gamma sorority. Bynie-Strader Ceremony 27 Episcopal Church An event of Sunday, August 24, was the wedding of Miss Patricia Ann Strader and William E. Byrne, at St. Mark's Episcopal church in this city. The bride is the daugh ter of Mrs. Vera Strader and granddaughter of Mrs. Arthur G. McMillin, 661 J street, Medford. The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Byrne, Eugene, Ore. The Rev. George R. V. Bolster read the double-ring ceremony at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and the bride was given in marriage by Harold Bunce, her guardian. Soloists were Mrs. Herschel Morris and John Drysdale, and Mrs. Ernest Conrad was at the or gan. For her wedding the bride wore a gown of white nylon tulle with Valencienne lace bodice and embroidered ap plique. The bodice was de signed with scoop neckline and cap sleeves, and the skirt with a brush train. Her finger-tip length veil was held by a crown of net and seed pearls and her pearl necklace was the bridegroom's gift. She carried the white heir loom prayer book which her mother had carried for her wedding, and stephanotis streamers. Miss Sally Manary, Baker, Ore., was the maid-of-honor and Mrs. Krith Carswell, Cor vallis, Ore., was matron-of-honor. The Misses Darla Moshberger, . Molalla, Ore., Helen Rasmussen, Carlton, Ore., and Sandra Hubbard, Medford, were bridesmaids. The honor attendants wore gowns of mint green chiffon with full skirts fashioned with drapery falling to the hem and velvet trim of match ing color. The bridesmaid's frocks were of the same de sign in pale yellow chiffon; all the attendants wore head dresses of daisies to match their gowns and carried nose gays of white stephanotis and pink rosebuds. The bride's mother wore a gown of maize colored silk Episcopal Rites Prospect-Miss Suzi McKil lop became the bride of Lester Gerald Namitz in rites held August 8 in Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd here, The Rev. George R. V. Bol ster, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal church, Medford, of ficiated The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archie McKil- lop, and Mr. Namitz is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerrald Namitz. . The service was held at eight o'clock in the evening, and Mr. McKillop gave his daughter in marriage. About 200 guests attended. The bride wore a gown of white lace over net and taffeta fashioned with train of lace and net ruffles. Her waist length veil was held by a coronet of seed pearls and she carried white carnations. Miss Sally McKillop was her sister's honor attendant and bridesmaids were Miss Kathi Snyder and Miss Bar bara Ashenhurst, Medford. Style Show Announced The annual silver tea and style show sponsored by Bethel 14, International Order of Job's Daughters will be held Friday, September 5 be ginning at 2 p.m. at the Ma sonic temple. Miss Sylvia Morris, senior princess, is chairman of the event. Women's and teenage fas hions from Mann's Depart ment store will be modeled by members of the organiza tion and their mothers. The show is open to the public. The group will hold a for mal initiation Wednesday, September 3 at the Masonic temple beginning at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. E. A. Goodnough of Eu gent, grand guardian of the State of Oregon, will make her official visitation at that time. Final practice for officers and chair members will be held at the temple on Sep tember j at 9:30 ajn. Temple Queen To Visit Clubs Mrs.E. Ronald Rice, queen of Zuleima temple, Daughters of' the Nile, will make the Nile, will make the first of her fall visitations to the Nile clubs of her district Tuesday evening, September 2. She will attend a meeting of the Coos Bay-North Bend Nile club. Wednesday, September 3, she will visit the Coquille Valley Nile club. The follow ing week on Tuesday, Septem ber 9 the officer will attend a meeting of Driftwood Nile club at Gold Beach and from there Mrs. Rice will travel to Roseburg for a meeting Fri day, September 12. Members of Zuleima temple from Southern Oregon who are planning to attend these meetings are asked to call! Mrs. McMillin wore a sheath frock of ecru lace with Eton jacket and chiffon cummerbund and her corsage was a lavender orchid. The bridegroom's mother was attired in a sheath of cocoa wool crepe and her corsage was also of talisman roses. Michael Kelly, Salem, served as Mr. Byrne's best man, and ' Morris Jerome Simpson, Long Beach, Calif., was head usher. Richard Hile, Seattle, Wash.; Thomas Forte, John Forney and Walter Cum mins, all Eugene, seated the guests. The reception which fol lowed in the Parish house was attended by about 100 guests. Mrs. William Clegg Jr., took charge of the guest book, Mrs. Irwin Keehn poured coffee and Mrs. H. E. Marsh served punch. Mrs. Paul G. Bauer served the wedding cake and Robert C. Byrne, young broth er of the bridegroom, the bridegroom's cake. Mr. Byrne and his bride spent their honeymoon on the coast and will live at 3511 Tyler street, Corvallis, where the bridegroom will enroll at Oregon State college to com plete his senior year. For traveling Mrs. Byrne wore sage green wool chemise suit with matching accessories and a white orchid corsage. The bride, . a graduate of Medford High school and Ore gon State college, is a mem ber of Delta Gamma, colleg iate fraternity for women. The bridegroom s iraternity is Beta Theta Pi. Wed Couple Miss McKillop wore a frock of yellow chiffon and carried white carnations. Miss Snyd er s frock was of blue net and Miss Ashenhurst wore pink net; their bouquets were white carnations with ribbons to match their gowns. Janie Rienks was flower girl and Jimmie Goode car ried the rings. Gloyd Adams, Sweet Home Ore., was best man for Mr. Namitz. James Namitz, broth er of the bridegroom, and Ralph Van Epps, Sweet home, were ushers. Yellow and white gladiolus and white candles provided a setting for the wedding party, Mrs. J. P. Richey played the wedding music. The reception was held in the gardens of the Prospect hotel. Arrangements of gladi olus in several shades provid ed a setting, white wedding bells hung from the trees and colored lights made the scene a festive one. Mrs. C. Namitz, Portland, the bridegroom's grandmother and Mrs. L. L. Conger, Pros pect, grandmother of the bride, poured. Mrs. Paul Doe, and Mrs. Thomas Rickard, both of JVIedford, cut and served the wedding cake. Miss Roma Shafer took charge of the guest book. For the event the bride's mother wore a blue and white chemise frock with white ac cessories and white carnation corsage. The bridegroom's mother wore a yellow frock with white accessories and her corsage was also of white carnations. Mr. Namitz and his bride spent their honeymoon on the California coast and are now at home in the Prospect Trail er court. The bride, a grad uate of Prospect High school, is a secretary for the Hoag Logging company. Mr. Namitz who attended Sweet Home High school, is employed by Francis McKay as a logging loader. Foreign Student Guest in Medford Recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Claude Sparks were their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Francis C. Sparks and their son Lyle, and daughter, Peggy. Accompanying them was Ole Djurhuus, Copenhag en, Denmark, who will live at the Sparks home in Clatska nie while attending high school there as an exchange student to this country. Mrs. Sparks, who is on the faculty of the Clatskanie High school, states that the student is an interesting boy who is quickly fitting in with the customs of this country. The visitor speaks five dif ferent languages other than Danish and Mrs. Sparks said that his English, both written and spoken, is amazingly fine. This 17-year-old student is six feet and two inches tall and passesses a yery pleasing per sonality, according to the Sparks family. A trip to Ore gon Caves and Crater Lake were interesting to him. i Mr. and Mrs. Michigan Couple Visit in Medford Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Rich ardson, Alpena, Mich., have been in Medford as guests of Mr. Richardson's brother - in - idw auu sister, ivir. ana ivirs J. T. Ball, 613 Catherine street. Mr. Richardson recent ly completed 30 years in the conservation department of Michigan, and is much inter ested in the natural resources of Oregon. The visitors arrived here August 18 and later went to Grants Pass to visit friends. Saturday the Balls and the Richardsons left 'for a trip down the Oregon and Cali fornia coast. Byrne x V (Landis photo) Relatives Visit At Gray Home A number of recent visitors to the valley have been guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. w. Gray cherry lane Here were Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Gray and sons, Michael and David, Salem, son and daughter-in-law of the Grays. Later Mrs. Gray's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Anstey, Portland, were guests here. Mrs. Winifred Gray Wise, Sedona, Ariz., who comes to the valley each summer dur ing the Oregon Shakespearean festival, was a guest of the Grays for 10 days. Last of the visitors was the Gray's son, Lt. R. A. Gray, who came from New York City where he is on duty with the; Strategic Air command. While in Oregon Lt. Gray also visited his brother in Salem. Ladd, 793 North Second street, Gold Hill, are celebrating their golden wed ding anniversary today and will be honored at a dinner given by their daughter, Mrs. Edna McCall, at her home in Ashland. The Ladds came west from Nebraska in wagons when he was 11 and she was seven, and their families settled near Lewiston, Idaho. The couple was married in Lewis ton.
