Holmes Asks State
Tax Court Bill
Salem'-OIPD-Gov. Robert D.
Holmes said today he had

The Governor said that the
Legislative Interim Tax Com

Snider Commends
Allen, City for
Work With Library
Mayor John W. Snider this
week presented a token of
appreciation to Eric W. Allen
Jr., for his services to the city
as library board chairman for
more than six years. .
At the same time he ex
pressed the thanks of the
Medford city council for "a
difficult task well done." The
presentation was made at the
August meeting of the library
board on Tuesday.
Allen was first appointed
to the library board by Mayor
Diamond L. Flynn in 1952,
and was reappointed in 1956.
While he served as chair
man of its board, the library
has expanded its book collec
tion, increased its circulation,
and initiated new services to
readers throughout Jackson
county, according to Libra
rian Helen E. Webster. The
responsibilities of library
trusteeship are more com
p 1 e x and time - consuming
than are generally realized,
she said, and are not always
compatible with editorial re
sponsibilities. H. Dewey Wilson, appoint
ed by Mayor Snider to suc
ceed Allen on the board, and
Mrs. Moore Hamilton, who
will fulfill the term of El
wood Heclberg, who has mov
ed to Portland, were intro
duced at the Tuesday meet
ing. Mrs. Leland Mentzer was
elected chairmaij of the board
and W. E. Thomas has agreed
to serve as its treasurer.
An item of agenda for the
meeting was examination of
a contract proposed by the
county court for continuation
of the Medford Public libra
ry's service as Jackson Coun
ty library.
Roy Bashaw, Medford city
attorney, was present to as
s i s t. Further consideration
will be given to the proposals
by members of the committee
in the hear future, it was decided.
Ike Signs Bill
For Lower Supports
Washington -v(UPD - Presi
dent Eisenhower today signed
a bill providing lower price
supports and greater planting
freedom for farmers.
The new law, enacted by a
Democratic controlled Con
gress, embraces much of the
controversial farm policy
recommendation of Secretary
of Agriculture Ezra T. Ben
son. It would permit lower price
supports for corn next year
and for cotton and rice, start
ing in 1961. The new mini
mum price floor for these
three crops would be 65 per
cent of parity. Supports now
range from 75 to 90 per cent
of parity, depending on sup
plies. The legislation also staves
off scheduled sharp cutbacks
in planting minimum allot
ments of 16 million acres for
cotton and 1,600,000 for rice.
