SWEATING OUT BLITZ Nationalist Chinese infantry
men on the Kimmen Islands near Quemoy assume an
alert position as invasion threatens from the Red China
mainland. The Nationalists say they have repulsed two

Karen Sloniger Gets
Tulane Scholarship
Karen Sloniger, a 19 5 8
Medford High school graduate
who now resides in Anaheim,
Calif., has been awarded a
four-year scholarship of $785
per year to Tulane university
in New Orleans, La., accord
ing to her mother, Mrs. G. E.
Sloniger. '
Miss Sloniger, 17, will at
tend Newcomb college, the
girls' college at Tulane, her
mother reported. The scholar
ship winner was also a merit
winner in the National Merit
Scholarship contest this year.
While attending Medford high
she was campus reporter for
the Mail Tribune and was
active in a number of school
activities.
Mr. and Mrs. Sloniger both
taught in the Medford school
system until this summer
when they moved to Calif
ornia. The award winner has an
older sister, Flori, who will be
a senior at the University of
Oregon this fall.

Eight Grand Champions in Dairy
Division Listed During 4-H Fair
Eight grand champions
were named in the 4-H dairy
division in close competition
at the annual 4-H, Future
Farmers of America fair here
last week.
Jerry Moore, Reese. Creek,
had the champion registered
Jersey, and Lanny Parsons of
Rogue River exhibited the
champion grade Jersey. In the
Guernsey division, Judy Nel
son of Griffin Creek and
David Carter of Rogue River
had registered the grade
champions, respectively.
Champion Holstein was ex
hibited by Georgia Hubbard
of Antelope. Champion Brown
Swiss cattle was shown by
Marilyn Deckelman of Evans
Valley and Gerald Reneau of
Talent. A milking Shorthorn
owned by Melvin Smith, Gold
Hill, was named final cham
pion. Sheep Exhibit
The largest sheep exhibit
ever held in Jackson county
packed the 4-H sheep build
ing at the fair. Top quality
breeding stock was exhibited
in all breeds.

Milk Goat Show
The first complete milk
goat show of its kind in the
county found Gail Glidden of
Phoenix and Allan Brooks
of Central Point topping their
divisions in the aged doe and
yearling doe, respectively.
Gail also took the champion
showman in milk goats, with
close competition from Mar
tha Humphreys of Westside.
Carolyn Tiegs of Talent
proved to be a versatile show
man during the fair as she
worked her way to the cham
pionship over-all dairy show
man after having previously
won the poultry showman
ship. Competing for the cham
