Newspaper Page Text4A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Wednasdiy, August 27, 1938 Pickin' Pears 3y WILLIAM M. BLACK JR. A social security list helped reunite brothers, Claude L. Stiehl and Virgil R. Baker, after a separation of 16 years. Virgil, who recently was ad mitted to the domiciliary, stopped to look at a bulletin board and noticed his broth er's name on a list of mem bers wanting an appointment with a social security repre sentative. Their reunion was 16 years, to the very day, apart from their last meeting. Strangely enough, both were in the same section but at opposite ends of the building and dur ing the 30 days Baker had been in the section, the two had never met either in the halls or the various activity divisions in the domiciliary. Although Baker was adopt ed when the brothers were children they maintained con tact until Stiehl went into the Army in 1942. Miss America, Marilyn Van Derbur, charmed an audience of some 400 members and staff in the theater Aug. 22. Miss Van Derbur appeared through the courtesy of the Kiwanis club of Medford and Special Services section at Camp White. Acting Manager Banks I. Paul was official host when Oregon Secretary of State Mark Hatfield toured Camp White Aug. 18. According to Paul, Hatfield was particular ly impressed by the new sta dium and the rehabilitation results achieved at the domi ciliary. Harold P. McQueen, noted advisor on letter writing, was a guest lecturer at Camp White Aug. 21 and 22. Mc Queen, during the first hour lecture period, stressed the three basic requirements of a "good" letter: friendliness, sincerity and simplicity. Tho sprond lecture Aug. 22 was devoted to a critique of letters written by the staff in various divisions of the domi ciliary. McQueen compliment ed the staff on the "generally fine writing" but suggested that some time-dishonored cliches could be eliminated. McQueen has acted as ad visor to many business firms and banks. . The en tire staff contributed to make the reception outstanding and it gave all a chance to formal ly meet the newly appointed chief medical officer and his wife. Walter E. Rogers of Section A recently received notice that he had won two first prizes at the Columbia County Fair, Deer Island, Ore. The prize winning entries were a hand woven rug and a copper embossed tray. Walter plans to submit a pair of handmade shoes and a set of handmade cowboy boots in the fair next year. Gillian has been chief edi torial writer for the Chicago Herald Tribune; chief of press relations for the Veterans of Foreign Wars; information renresentative with the Navy in World War II; advertising and public relations represen tative for Carl Byoir of New York City. Klamath Falls Man Arrested by Police William Raymond Noland, 28, of Klamath Falls, was arrested here yesterday on a charge of larceny, Medford police reported. The arrest was made on a warrant from the Coos coun ty sheriffs office charging Noland with the theft of an automobile. Bail was set at $500.
