Family Council ..L.Gladys R. She shouldn't tell about her past. Eunice F. I don't want to deceive him. Gladys R- My younger sister, Eunice, was a very mixed-up girl when she was in her teens. She got into quite a bit of trouble before she finally straightened her self out. Eunice has been behaving beautifully for the past four years. She now has an ex cellent, job, a nice group of friends and is highly respect ed and well liked by every one. Recently, a fine young man asked her to marry him. She suggested the wait a while to make sure of their feelings. What is really on her mind is whether or not to tell him anything about her past. 'I say definitely not. He is very much in love with her and it would only hurt him. Nothing would be accomplish ed by it. Eunice F. There is very little possibility of Alan's ever finding out anything about my past, and yet I just don't like to take even that small chance. Suppose he should learn something after we were married. It makes a cheat and a liar out of me, on top of all the rest. I know Alan has very high ideals and I am so thrilled and flattered that he should have chosen me. That makes it doubly hard to deceive him. I imagine that once we were married my secret would be on my mind a lot. I know Alan loves me, yet I know from the way he has spoken of others that he can be pretty hard on those who don't live up to his standards. I'd be afraid to risk losing him. Tho Council: It is not pos sible to give a simple "tell'' or "don't tell" answer to this question. Much depends upon the feelings and attitudes of both parties. Despite the fact that she has done much to redeem herself, Eunice appears to be plagued by guilt about her past con duct. Her belief ihat her sec ret would be on her mind after she got married sug gests that her guilt flares up at the idea of a new, though legitimate, sexual relation ship. Powerful guilt feelings, strengthened by the fact that she is imposing a deception on her husband, can certainly put quite a strain on her mar riage. It is interesting that Eunice has managed to attract a young man who is "pretty hard on those who don't live up to his standards." Possibly Eunice has set it as a kind of goal for herself to to able to win the respect of the strictest individual she can find. But even success in this does not make her en tirely happy because she is uneasy with her own con science. A girl like Eunice needs to square -with herself first. Then she will know how best to deal with a potential hus b a n d. Possibly an enriched religious u n d e rstanding of life will help her win for giveness in her own eyes. .Per haps some talks with a physi cian wilL also clear up fears and confusions. Right now, Eunice appears to be more concerned about holding her own high image in Alan's mind than any other respect of their relationship.
