Geddes, Hatfield Get Most Votes in Straw Balloting - Paul Geddes, Roseburgi Re publican candidate for repre sentative from the fourth con gressional district, polled Nfour more votes than Charles O. Porter, Democrat incumb ent, in a "straw" vote spon sored by radio station KMED in connection with the Kiwa- nis club sponsored county fair here last week end. A total of 790 votes was cost for national, state and local officers, and on two is sues which will appear on the ballot in the November elec tion. George Stacey, Medford public accountant, counted and certified the ballots cast Geddes received 3S8 votes and Porter got 334, according to Frank Pinnock, news di rector at KJIED. Hatfield Gets 521 Mark Hatfield, Republican candidate for governor, re ceived 521 straw votes, and Gov. Robert D. Holmes, Dem ocrat, who is seeking reelec tion, polled 261 votes. Nor man O. Nilsen, Portland Democratic candidate for commissioner of labor, re ceived 322 votes, and Lyle E McCauley, Salem, Republi can candidate, received 366. In the fifth district senato rial race, Edward R. Durno. Republican candidate, receiv ed 433 votes, and the Demo cratic candidate, Gordon Hudson, received 324. Robert B. Duncan and Mrs T.Iarijane Duncan, Medford Democratic candidates for state representative, polled 444 and 284 votes, respective ly, and Melvin Lattie and Mrs. Evelyn Nye, Medford Republican candidates for representative, received 293 and 284. respectively. County Races In county races, Incumbent Mrs. Bereth Hopkins, Repub lican, received 425 for county clerk, and Marvin Madden Phoenix, Democratic candi date received 338. Chester Wendt, incumbent county commission and a Republican polled 439 votes to Frank Christian's ' 309. Christian is Democratic candiate for com missioner. Earl Miller, former Med ford mayor, Republican, re ceived 470 votes for county judge and C. Scott Hamilton Democrat, received 279. Joe Walsh, Republican candidate for sheriff, received 455, and Earle E. Fichtner, Democratic candidate, polled 294 votes Two state issues appeared on the straw ballot. They were whether or not the death penalty should be re tained and on increasing sal aries of state senators and representatives from S600 to ,$1,200 annually. There were 447 votes cast in favor of re taining the death penalty and 268 against; 506 were in favor of increasing salaries and 226 were against it. Umatilla Records Case of Polio Pendleton - (LTD - Umatilla county health officer Walter P. Browne Monday revealed that the county recorded its first polio case in more than 16 months. Dr. Browne said the patient was a 29-year-old male resi dent of Pilot Rock. He will be hospitalized for five days before returning home. Dr. Browne said the man had not been inoculated with Salk vaccine. COULDN'T CARRY IT HOME New York OD The De partment of Sanitation had an odd problem on its hands today. Packing shares, notably Cudahy and Armour turned active and firm on predic tions of better profits ahead for the packing group. Bell Aircraft ran up three points to a new high when the company announced, its engineers have harnessed for space flight rocket propulsion a chemical so flammable that it will ignite asbestos, lea ther and even water on con tact. Other aircrafts firmed with Bell, with Cessna aided by its operations in produc tion of executive planes.. DOW-JONES AVERAGES New York ITPD Dow Jonei final stock averages: 30 industrials 509.163, up 1.35; 20 railroads 133.45, up 0.60; 15 utilities 77.84. off 0.13, and 65 stocks 174.93, up 0.39. Today's prices on selected stocks: Allied Chemical 86i Alum Co Am 78 American Can 463-4 American Motors 16Vs Meat Freight Rate Hearings Slated Salem -flJPD- Motor and rail freight rates on movement of packing-house products and meats from Midwest points to the West Coast will be in vestigated by the Interstate Commerce Commission at a hearing set for Oct. 28 at Den ver, Colo. Oregon Public Util ity Commissioner Howard Morgan said today. C. W. Ferguson, director of rail transportation for the Oregon PUC, has been order ed to attend the October hear ing. "Recent drastic rail rate re ductions on westbound dress ed meats in the territory have grossly distorted historical rate relationships between dressed meat and livestock in such a fashion as to create the destruction of the West Coast packinghouse in dustry," Morgan said. Korea Encephalitis Epidemic Spreads Seoul (UPD An encephalitis epidemic that has blanketed most of the southern prov inces of Korea swept toward Seoul today. The number of cases reported pushed past the 1,000 mark. The Ministry of Health said the death toll from the dread brain disease was 160 and was continuing to rise rap idly. The U.S. Army warned all soldiers to take extra precau tion against mosquitoes which carry the disease, and restrict ed the wearing of short sleeved shirts at night. Crash Survivors Still Hospitalized Portland - (UPD - Two survi vors of a two-car collision which killed six persons near Troutdale early Sunday re mained hospitalized here today. Mrs. Irene Nelson, 46. Dal las. Tex., was in serious con dition and James Harold White, 17, Yakima, Wash., was in lair condition, lney were each thrown from cars involved in the two-car crash. Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Walsh said thieves broke in through a rear window of the building at 2360 South Pacif ic highway and took an esti mated S33.34 in cash from a file cabinet and $3 in stamps. Thieves also broke into the John S. Weisbrad realty office in the same building, forced open a file cabinet and took an electric hot plate. Mrs. John G.' Winters, Med ford, reported to sheriff's deputies today that someone broke into a cabin owned by the Winters near Butte Falls and took articles valued at $300. The burglary occurred some time between Aug. 19 and Aug. 22, she said. Sacramento Man Appears in Court Charles John Maddox, Sac ramento, Calif., pleaded guil ty in district court yesterday to charges of petty larceny and was sentenced to six months in the county jail. He was placed on probation on condition he leave the county. According to court records," he was charged with taking a bag of groceries Aug. 9 from Carl Irwen Stockford. Otto Kemph, 205 Portland -re Medford, appeared in district court yesterday on charges of assault and battery. The trial was continued until Aug. 29 to enable him to enter a plea.
