"Tommy," whispered the lady to her small son,
playing with his tin soldiers, "your grandfather
is ill. It would be nice if you'd go in
and cheer him up a bit."
Tommy hesitated a moment but manfully did as
his mother told him. He tiptoed into the
darkened room and regarded his grandfather
with concern until the old man stirred and
looked at him. Then Tommy asked solicitously,
"Gramps, would you like to have my
soldiers guard your funeral?"

A doting dog owner enrolled
her poodle in a training school
for canines. When the pooch
came home after the first
session the owner cooed, "And
what did you learn today,
Lionel? Geography?" The
dog shook his head.
"Arithmetic?" Again Lionel '
shook his shaggy head.
"Well, perhaps a foreign
language?" The dog arched
his back, lashed his tail, and
answered, "Meeeow!"

Just Wave as You Go By
Now that the Summer travel season
is nearing its end, I feel safe in saying
that 1958 was a banner year for tourists
whothrow trash in our yard. Not only
was the quantity of debris up, but its
intrinsic interest. Just the other day, for
instance, I found a Paushmayer beer
can in the peony bed near the road a
welcome contrast to familiar local
brands and all the more broadening
because research proved Paushmayer's
retail outlets are 700 miles west of us
as the suds fly.

You might disparage,
might deplore
My child when introduced
to him;
And so might I were it not
for
The fact that I am used to
him.

supermarket (we live in Connecticut,
which has its own .supermarkets), a
weekly newspaper from a small North
Dakota town (complete with a listing of
folks who visited Bismarck on the week
end), and an empty vitamin bottle from
a Texas pharmacy. These collectors
items are now on our mantle, awing
neighbors and friends.
Not only is America traveling farther,
it's traveling richer. One of my most
hallowed pieces of trash is the fragment
of a caviar canape which I came upon
last week such a change from the
usual dry cheese sandwich! It's
theory the canape was discarded by
some wealthy chap who never soiled
his hands with the actual operation but
had his chauffeur give it the old heave
ho. Just the same, it gives us a warm
feeling to know that all you tourists, ricn
and poor, near and far, are constantly
remembering us. Parke Cummings
