Result of Failure
Miss Hendrix' lawyer, Os
car R. Cummins, claimed the
collapse was the result of her
failure to convince her es
tranged husband, millionaire
sportsman James Langford
Stack Jr., that they- could
save their marriage.
Cummins said he had ar
ranged a conference telephone
call between the actress,
Stack and his attorney in
Reno, when Miss Hendrix' re
peated attempts to talk to her
husband had failed.
"Wanda made a plea to her
husband that they make an-j
other try at saving their mar
riage," Cummins said.
He quoted the beautiful
film star as saying to Stack:
"We can make a go of it."
"We're not discussing emo
tion," the attorney said Stack
replied, "We're here to talk
legal talk."
With that, according to
Cummins, Miss Hendrix
screamed and slumped in her
chair, ignoring attempts to
talk to her. Dr. Siegel was
called.

Department to Act
Quickly in Case
Washington (UPD A Jus
tice Department spokesman
said today the government
will act "expeditiously" on
the House of Representatives'
citation of Bernard Goldfine
for contempt of Congress.
The House listened to a
small but stormy debate
Wednesday and then voted
369-8 to cite the Boston mil
lionaire for his adamant re
fusal to answer 22 questions
about his business affairs be
fore the House influence-investigating
subcommittee.
If brought to trial and con
victed, the gift-giving friend
of Presidential Assistant Sher
man Adams would face a
maximum sentence of one
year in prison and a $1,000
fine or both.
' The Justice Department
spokesman explained the de
partment's first step would
be to "evaluate" the citation
and the testimony that
brought it about to see wheth
er the case merited presenta
tion to a federal grand jury.
If the matter is turned over
to a grand jury, he said, the
jurors would decide whether
Goldfine should be brought
to trial.
In Boston, Goldfine's at
torney, Samuel P. Sears, said
that "we will fight this, of
course." He said the House
cited Goldfine because mem
bers "had to back up their
committee."

Grange News
Phoenix Grange
Phoenix Grange met Tues
day, Aug. 12 at 8 p.m., Master
Charles Johnson presiding.
Attendance was smaller
than usual due to the busy
season in the fruit and other
farm activities.
Melvin Lattie, reporting on
legislation, read a communi
cation from State Grange con
cerning farm subsidies. And
he gave a talk on farm sub
sidies as compared to those
granted other businesses. He
said articles published in cur
rent magazines often gave the
erroneous impression that
farmers receive more than is
due them, while in reality
they receive much less than
other businesses.
Reporting on horticulture
Vaughn Quackenbush talked
on blight in pear orchards.
and leaf mites which infest
oak trees. He interspersed his
discourse on those subjects
with comments on Sputnik.
