1 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Ore., Wednesday, Augmf 13, 1958 Clayton Powell Gels Demo Nomination ; New York TPD Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, Negro congressman - minister who was dumped by Tammany Hall because he supported President Eisenhower in 1956, swept to a resounding victory pver Tammany-backed candi date Earl Brown Tuesday to win a Democratic renomina iion for an eighth congression al term. T Returns from 120 of the 143 districts in New York's 16th District (Harlem) which Powell has represented in Congress the past 14 years gave him 11,796 votes to 4,133 for Brown, a city councilman yiho is also a Negro. " The overwhelming victory by the 49-year-old Baptist minister was a severe blow to Tammany Hall, the New York County Democratic organiza tion and to the prestige of its leader, Carmine G. De Sapio, one of the nation's most influential Democrats. Some observers had ex pected Powell's recent indict ment on charges of income tax evasion would affect his vote pulling power. But the in dictment by a federal grand jury was not an issue in the campaign and apparently had no bearing on the primary election. My sister is mak ing a fool of herself over a man. Gertrude F. I can't help it I love him. Rose E. I am 26 and have been married eight yean and I feel well qualified to give a little advice to my 23-year-old sister, who is making a fool of herself over a m a n who doesn't give a hoot for her. Finally she got one. They had been going steady for about a year and a half, but nothing seemed to be com ing of it. At last Gertrude decided to take the plunge and do the proposing herself. I advised her against it, but she went ahead anyway. The answer was something like "Well, I'm not sure yet. Give me time to think it over." I told Gertrude she should have her head examined when she insists upon seeing him after that. That girl does n't know a slap in the face when she gets it. . Gertrude T Maybe I am a iooi, I don t know. I lust can't help myself. I have never been so drawn toward any man and I don't think I could ever feel this way about anyone else. Arnold has explained to me that he has a lot of responsi bilities in his family. His fath er is dead and he is the old-. est. Maybe it is just an excuse, but I can't help realizing that he does have a difficult prob lem and he has to think things through. I am very sorry if what my sister says is true that I've made a fool of myself and cheapened myself by doing the proposing. But I wanted so much to know where I stood. I feel that Arnold likes me very much and could love me if he gave himself a chance, but he is afraid of the responsibilities of marriage. I am willing to work for several years after we get married, but Rose says I'd be making a worse fool of myself. The Council: No we don't think Gertrude has made or is making a fool of herself by pursuing the man she be lieves she loves, but possibly she is wrong to put all her eggs in this fragile basket. Anyone who proposes man or woman runs the risk of being refused or get ting an indecisive answer. This is not an insult or a slap. Many women have done the proposing and gotten affirma tive answers and gone on to happy marriages. But a woman who is hardy enough to do the proposing must also be hardy enough to accept a rejection with out too much bitterness or suffering. She has nof reason to feel she has "cheapened" herself. Since Arnold feels he needs time to think things over, Gertrude might as well make good use of this time herself. She ought to think things over and consider what it would mean to be married to a man who is rather reluctant about taking the plunge. Such a man is likely to feel he has been trapped into mar riage. Instead of appreciating the sincerity and strong char acter of a woman like Ger trude, he might feel resent ful of her when the ordinary and inevitable problems of married life arise. These are only possibilities. We don't know Arnold. Ger trude does. She should try to. study him a little more through the cool eyes of rea son instead of the rosy glasses of love. She should, at the same time, take another look around at other "men she knows. If she gives it an hon est chance she may find some one more worthy of her love. Arnold's desire for a chance to think may be for the best for both of them. (Copyright 1958. However, he added, cars eastbound on Eighth St., in tending to turn north on Riv erside ave., could not make that left turn on a red light. Thorpe announced that a timing device is now in ef fect at the Main st.-Riverside ave. intersection to allow a longer green light for River side ave. traffic between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. He said the green light would last 37 sec onds for Riverside ave. dur ing this period, and 17 sec onds for Main st. Normally the green light lasts for 26 seconds each. He said a yellow stripe would be painted soon to in dicate the right turn lane from Riverside ave. onto Main st. He said he had de cided against a sandbag bar rier there for the time being. I ! !
