WALZER United Press International New York (LTD One hears a lot about a falling off in shipbuilding but the facts prove otherwise. The nation's shipyards have a big fat order backlog of new ships and a sizable amount of repair work. Their business backlog isn't what it was right after the Suez Canal was closed. Then many orders were cancelled when the Suez reopened. , Marine Engineering maga zine estimates . the U.S. ship yards will do nearly S2 billion in business this year. There are still tanker or ders. Also there's a lot of re placement, building for subsi dized shipping lines. The St. Lawrence Seaway may bring a spurt of shipbuilding but just now the orders aren't forthcoming. Everyone wants to wait and see what happens when the seaway is opened in full force. "The future is good for U.S. ship building," says Marine Engineering. 'The ship own ers have shown their good in tentions of replacing their ships. "The shipbuilder is showing his faith in the future by re building and improving the shipyards. "The government requires some 300 ships to be replaced within the next 15 years. Out of the 772 American flag ships totaling 7,300,000 dead weight tons, only 16 per cent were built since World War II. "The average age of U. S. freighters is 12 years. The work horse of the tanker Towerman Fails To Stop Train Sloatsburg, N.Y. (UPD A towerman's admitted failure to flash a "stop" signal was blamed Monday for the head oncollision of two Erie Rail road passenger trains which killed five persons and injur ed 35. Twenty-eight of the injured in Monday's crash 40 miles northwest of New York City were still hospitalized today, three in critical condition. Signalman Frederick Roth, 38. a veteran railroader, ad mitted to investigators he had forgotten to hold a westbound train at Suffern, as he had been instructed, to permit an eastbound train to use the westbound track. At the time a freight train was using the eastbound track. Moments after the west bound train bound from Ho boken, N.J., to Port Jervis, N.Y., left the Suffern station Roth realized his lapse of memory. Frantically he tried to reach the westbound train by radio-telephone. But his message never got through. Ontario Attorney Gets Circuit Post Salem (ITD Ontario attor ney Jeff D. Dorrah Jr. was appointed circuit judge for the 9th district of Malheur and Harney counties by Gov. Robert D. Holmes Monday. Dorrah, a 37-year-old grad uate of the University of Ore gon law school, was named to the unexpired term of Judge M. A. Biggs, Vale, who died in office two weeks ago. The new judge is a Marine flying ace and has been prac ticing in Ontario since 1943. He will have to stand for election to the $13,000-a-year post at the general election this November and will re sign as Democratic nominee for district attorney of Mal heur county. It does not mean that there are boom possibilities be cause there are not. "Between commercial and naval work there is enough business to keep the U. S. shipyards working on a Grange News Upper Applegaie Grange Upper Applegate Grange will be host at an old-fashioned ice cream social Satur day, Aug. 16, commencing at 8 p.m., according to an an nouncement made by Ways and Means Committee Chair man Ethel West at the regular Grange session Aug. 8. Ice cream and home made cakes will be offered, and there will be card games and dancing for those who wish to participate. All are invited to come and bring their friends. Other projects of Sister West's committee, which are still in the planning stage, in clude a barbecue, for which no date has been selected as yet, and a class for beginners in square dancing. This will consist of a series of 12 les sons for a stated fee per cou ple, given by members of the Rogue Valley Black Lighters dance troupe, and is sched uled to begin in September. The classes will be open to all who are interested, regardless of Grange affiliation. Further information may be secured form the Fred Wests. In the absence of Brother George Redhead, who is con valescing from virus pneu monia, Overseer Pearl Byrne occupied the master's station and conducted the Grange meeting. Chaplain Mildred Redhead reporting for the relief com mittee; stated that funeral services would be held in Medford the following day, Aug. 9, for Mrs. Mildred Green of Gold Hill, mother of Sister Anna Scott's husband, Willis Scott. She also reported that Brother Hugh Scovell had suffered another heart at tack, and conveyed her hus band's thanks and apprecia tion to the Grange for calls, cards, messages, and assist ance with farm duties during his illness. Final arrangements were also announced for Grange Church Sunday, which was observed Aug. 10, when Grange members attended the 11 a.m. worship service at Ruch Community church and then assembled at the Grange hall for a pot luck luncheon. Home Economics Chairman Edna Sawyer reported that she and five volunteers from the Home Economics club would be at Camp White from 10 a.m; until noon on Mon day, Aug. 11, to do mending for veterans in residence there. Since this is to be a continuing project, additional volunteers will be needed. She also requested that members having surplue fresh vegeta bles take them to the Ruch church for use of the young sters who were leaving Aug. 11 for summer camp. Sister Stella Offenbacher was named to represent the Grange on the Oregon Centen nial committee for the Apple gate valley, of which Robert P. Sorber of Star ranger sta tion is chairman. (UPD A British radiation expert call ed on all nations Monday to submit to international control over the deadly radioactive by-products of nuclear power plants. - v Dr. Robert H. Mole of Har well, England, predicted that sooner or later "serious at tempts will be made to cheap en the cost" of atomic power at the expense of precautions against radiation injury. Mole is participating in the first international congress of radiation research being held at the University of Vermont with nearly 1,000 of the world's foremost radiation ex perts in attendance. Satisfactory Solution So far nobody has come up with a satisfactory solution of what to do with the fright eningly hot potato of radioac tive ashes from atomic plants. Not even the deepest ocean trenches seem to be safe dumping places for these wastes. Scatter them carelessly and you scatter the seeds of can cer, leukemia and premature death. Industriously advanc ed countries like Britain, Canada and the United States can afford to lock up the more intensely radioactive wastes indefinitely in costly tanks. The danger that someone will try to cut the cost of nu clear power by dumping the wastes without regard to con sequences will become in creasingly acute as demand for the new source of power grows, Mole believes. He said this probably would be es pecially true in under-devel-iped nations. "This danger," Mole said, "makes the worjd really a small place." If one country is careless about waste disposal, all countries will suffer, he said. "I believe," he added, "that there should be international control of atomic wastes and some abdication of individual countries' independence." Last year, 161 American over 100 years of age were receiving social security checks. McKenzie emphasized that the Legion has authorized no one to solicit magazine sub scriptions in the name of the Legion.
