Each article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does not give advice; it merely reports on problems that have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors. Laura M. I don't want to give up the fight for my husband. John B. She has no right to sacrifice her sons. Laura M. My husband and I have been separated for the past two' years be cause of his affair with anoth er woman. We have two sons, 19 and 20, and my husband has contributed well to our support. Up until now I have refused to cooperate in granting my husband a divorce. I saw no reason to make things easy for him after the way he treat ed me. Now, however, my husband says if I grant the divorce he will go all-out in his help to the boys. He has promised to take them into his very successful business or to set them up in businesses of their own. Otherwise he'll do noth ing for them. Maybe I'm being foolish, but I still feel there is some small hope of winning my husband back. I don't want to give up yet, but my brother thinks I'm wrong. John B. I don't see how there can be two ways of thinking about it. Laura has no right to sacrifice her sons just to try to get her own way about this thing. A man who has been separ ated from his family for two years isn't going to come back. In fact, I wonder whether Laura would really want him back after all the bitterness that has occured between them. I don't see how they could ever resume normal married life again. If she would get a divorce, Laura might think in terms of getting married again and building her life over. This way she just broods about the Standard's local buying means good business for more than 26,000 "hometown" suppliers Our shopping list covers everything from adding machines to zinc Almost any ' item you can name from commonplace things like pencils, paint, pipe, printing to ' the less ordinary like binoculars, badges, blankets and burglar alarms is on our 50,000-item shopping list' Here in the West alone, last year Standard was a good customer for more than 10,000 suppliers of goods and services, to whom we paid more than $250,000,000. This was an important factor in the business health of many western towns. When a sum like this goes into circulation it spreads out in all directions to support Jobs and payrolls. It helps assure customers for thousands of enterprises, both small and large, including Standard. That's why we make every practical effort to buy locally it means better business in the communities we serve. 4 ipi fl llP 1' Progress in theWest means Cl1 "ft&2tMB t I I I I I I jfJEfefi , Encouraging the growth of local fl CjtTT? I don't think her sons .will ever be able to forgive her if she throws away their big chance like this. The Council: John offers some reasonable arguments, yet we do not believe his con clusion is necessarily correct. Money is a great tempta tion, but this is blackmail. There is no reason to suppose the money that flows so easily from a muddled source will benefit these young men in the long run in terms of their personal happiness. These sons may be better off if they set out to make their own ways in the world. We believe Laura can ex plain to her sons why she is making a decision which seems damaging to them at the moment. If she sincerely felt there was hope of recon ciliation, she would certainly be doing a grave injustice to them and herself by becoming a partner to the deal her hus band offers. 1 On the other hand, Laura is foolish if she is focused purely on the matter of mak it hot for her husband. The damage to herself is much more serious than any. damage she can do her husband by pursuing this line of thought and feeling. She must try to free her self from brooding self-pity, spite and senseless daydream ing and think in terms of cre ating as full and happy a life for herself as she is able. Then she will know better hosv to act best in her own interest and that of her sons. Laura's decision about the divorce should be based on rationality and sound princi ple, and she must try to rule out the temptation simply to accept a bribe. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
