Wallace, who had once been a surveyor, took the man out onto a long inlet of the sea in England and showed him, with the help of a theodolite and two rods, the the surface of the water was curved and not flat. Instead of being satisfied, and paying over the money, the man promptly sued Wal lace for annoying him and "defaming his character." In the next two years the man kept hounding Wallace into the courts and costing him so much money that eventually, to get rid of. him, Wallace bought him off with a thous and pounds or so out of his small savings? (UPD Lush El Rancho Vegas bowed today to a Roman Catholic church edict against bare-bosomed shows but at two other showplaces along the glitter ing "Strip" it was business as usual. Leggy El Rancho showgirls, ordered to take it off recently, were told to "put it back on" by Beldon Katleman, owner of the swank hostelry. In a telegram to the Most Rev. Bishop Robert J. Dwy- ler of the Diocese of Nevada, Katleman joined the ranks of the "dressed" shows with this statement: "Please accept my personal reassurance that it was at no time the intention of the El Rancho Vegas to offend pub lic decency or moral stand ards with our show presenta tions.' "It is to be hoped the El Rancho's action of withdraw ing such features from a show will be followed by others in Las Vegas." By others, Katleman refer red to the Dune hotel and the newly opened Stardust where bare - bosomed shows continued to pack 'em in. A pastoral letter written by the Roman Catholic church leader was read Sunday at all Masses in the Nevada dio cese. Catholics were reminded they were "strictly forbidden by divine law" to have any part in entertainment which is of its nature indecent or suggestive. Holdiman, 34 Hawthorne ave., had requested a prelim inary hearing when he was arraigned on the charge.
