I airy Maids State Hostess Nine Triumphs Over Hillsboro in Final; Eugene Takes Third Place Memorial Stadium, Camp White Anyone who would allow only that the Rogue Valley Dairy Maids are a pretty fair country ball club would be charged with under statement today. For the Maids, pride of their valley, are champions of the state. They were crowned last night after bouncing Hills boro Economy Drug 5 to 1 here in the finals of the fourth annual women's tourney of the Oregon State Softball as sociation. It was the fourth 'triumph in as many .nights and the second in the tourney over the Druggists for the hustling, ag gressive, heads-up playing Dairy Maids, who had their anxious moments but who came through ..with colors streaming when the chips were down. To Enter Regional Rogue Valley, only nine to go through the double elimin ation tournament unbeaten, opened on Thursday by thumping the Druggists 11 to 1. On the following evening they pounded the Salem Shamrocks 7 to 1 and on Saturday they squelched Eu gene McCulloch Chain Saw 7 to 2 to reach the Sunday finale. The Dairy Maids, tourney hostess here, with their cham pionship qualified to enter the regional tournament Aug. 21 through 24 at Forest Grove. Hillsboro had to come back the hard way to gain last night's final which was play ed before an overflowing crowd estimated at 2,500 spec tators. Rogue Valley put over two of its runs in the second in ning on an error, a single and stolen base by Shirley Han son, a sacrifice flyout by Irma Penwell and a ground. He made it clear that the other four PCC schools, Ore gon State, Oregon, Washing ton State and Idaho did not figure in these plans. The four schools, however, that originally announced they were bolting the PCC met together among them selves with Stanford con spiciously absent. He fired a 187 out of a possible 219 at the Camp White range on the official DCM qualification course C. Other riflemen and their scores were:' Richard Wright, 182; Naomi Thigpin, 165; Tru itt Cantrall, 162; Bill Ganong, 158; John Maass, 153; M. D. Childers, 152; Ralph McKen sey, 149; Don Crawford, 126; and Pink Burnette, 116. The club's next qualifica tion big bore shoot is sched uled for September. The circuit clout followed a walk to Marie Delplanche, a single by Joyce Baier and an error put ting Jansen on base. The hom er was off Eugene's ace chuck er, Darla Logan who had just replaced Karen Kirkmire. The Maids opened with two runs in the first -inning on a walk, single by Ellen Cal laghan, a sacrifice by Bernice Bigham and two errors. Three runs were in the fourth canto on triples by Wall and Main, Camp White Plays Drain Black Sox Camp White of the Rogue Valley Baseball league will meet the Drain Black Sox at Memorial stadium tonight in a non-league encounter slated to begin at 8 o'clock. She and three other Dairy Maids were named to the all-star team. Linda McKay, Eugene, all-star catcher, was picked by -tourney officials as the outstanding player other than pitcher. The three other all-stars on the Maid nine were Doris Hickson, first base; Diane Wall, third base, and Ellen Callaghan, outfielder. Conner Bat Champion The "dream" team in cluded Virginia Hannen. Southpaw Pete Burnside of the Giants blanked Vancou ver, 1-0, Sunday with a three hitter that boosted Phoenix three full games ahead of the Mounties. It marked the sec ond straight day that Vancou ver had been held to three hits. Pads Coming Back In other league action, San Diego moved to within one game of second place by beat ing Seattle twice, 4-2 and 4-3, Portland doused Salt Lake twice, 9-2 and 7-3, while Spo kane trimmed Sacramento, 3;1, in a single night 'game. . Fred Hatfield and Dave Pope helped in this one with homers. Then Brodowski ' relieved Pete Wojey in the ninth frame of the overtime nightcap and won it in the 10th.
