The Hollywood Scene By HAZEL JOHNSON United Press Writer Hollywood (UPD The minute Lana Turner walked on the movie set with a brave, bright smile and her head held high the tension surrounding her return to the movie busi ness began to evaporate. By mid - morning the cast and crew of Universal-International's re-make of "Immi tation of Life' were relaxed and full of admiring praise for the slender blonde as she politely, but ever so firmly, in dicated the door is shut when it comes to the events of the past four months. Lana, her short locks "lengthened" by a matching platinum "fall." was available to the press. But the subject of her daughter, Cheryl, and the knife death of Johnny Stompanato Jr. on Good Fri day clearly were to be avoid ed. Nervousness Admitted The actress did admit a little "nervousness." '"But I always am when I start a picture," she said in a clear, firm voice. Only her eyes and an oc casional nervous movement of her beautifully - manicured hands showed the strain she was under. Dressed in a simple, ging ham gown and looking 10 years younger than she did when she gave testimony which cleared her 10-year-old daughter of Stompanato's death at a coroner's inquest last May, Lana would speak only of the future. "Cheryl may come and visit me on the set," was her sole reference to her -tall, quiet speaking daughter who by SHIPPING MAN DIES : New Yprk (UPD Charles Hall Speights, 58, prominent in shipping circles, died sud denly Wednesday evening. court order is living with her grandmother until a final cus tody hearing next month. Daughter Enjoys Visits "She always does," Lana said, adding that her daughter "loves to watch." Asked if she thought Cheryl might be interested in becom ing an actress, Lana said she wasn't sure. "Cheryl's artistically in clined and draws and sketches," she said. "But I don't know about becoming an actress." The actress broke off just then to acknowledge the ar rival of a huge bouquet of flowers from the movie's producer. C BORD ) CRATER LAKE MOTORS, INC., Main & Fir, Medford Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF A NOUVEAU EICH Wall Street plunger decided the time had come to add some .genuine art masterpieces to his be longings. After a hasty course by an "expert" the plunger invaded the market on his own. A Matisse in the win dow of a gallery on 57th Street caught his eye. He strode inside, buttonholed the director,, and declared forcefully, "I want that Matisse in the window, but you're not going to stick me for it It's worth $40,000 and that's what I'll pay; not one red cent more." "Sold," said the director quietly, As he pocketed the new owner's check, he- added quietly, "Our price for the picture had been set at $29,000." Two unusual gifts were duly recorded last week. A compassionate friend treated a despondent cannibal chief to a cure on a psychia trist's couch. It seems the cannibal was plumb fed up with people. And a Hollywood star sent an agent he detested a live alligator nag. ' C 1358, by Sennett Cert .Distributed by King Features Syndicate. . Miss Grant, 23, who is ex pecting their first child, was admitted to the maternity wing of the hospital at 3:45 a.m. A hospital spokesman said only that "she is here and there are no complica tions." Crosby and the former Olive K. Grandstaff, West Co lumbia, Tex., were wed last Oct. 24 at Las Vegas, Nev. Factions Engaged in Battle Over Nudity in Shows on Las Vegas Strip Las Vegas, Nev. (UPD Factions warring over bare bosomed showgirls figurative ly faced each other today across the highway dividing this gambling resort's famed "strip" of resort hotels. On the west side of the Mason-Dixon line formed by U.S. Highway 81 which ribbons across the desert to ward heavily populated Southern California are the forces of nudity or "art lov ers. On the east are the anti nudes, or hotels which have warned that no good will come of the "trend toward nudity." Church Members Warned Observing the scene is the Roman Catholic Church, which Thursday joined the issue with a pastoral letter decrying the trend toward nudity and warning members of the church to stay away from such shows. The Most Rev. Bishop Rob ert J. Dwyer of the Diocese of Nevada issued a pastoral letter which will be read at each Mass on Sunday. It stated: "All Catholics are strictly forbidden by the Divine Law itself to have any part in en tertainment which is of its nature indecent or suggestive. Visitors of the Catholic Faith are bound by the same law there is no vacation from the Ten Commandments." The bosom barrier was first broken by the Dunes which was' followed recently by the newly opened Stardust and the El Rancho. Commented Major A. Rid dle, president of the Dunes hotel: "The question of nudity has been the battleground sepa rating the church and the artist since the earliest times. The artist has always pro claimed the human body as a thing of beauty, to be ad mired and revealed in good taste and in glorification of the highest concept. "In the case of exposing the female form for public view, the tradition of nudity in the theater has been solely to glorify beauty." Across the highway where the "dressed" shows of the Tropicana, Flamingo, Sands, Desert Inn, Riviera and Sa-i hara hotels are still drawing good crowds, veteran show man Jack Entratter, presi dent and producer at the Sands, said: "The trend toward nudity is the worst thing that could happen to Las Vegas and all show business. Our long and expensive struggle to provide the best floor shows for the nine million visitors to Las Vegas each year could be de stroyed in just three months if nude shows continue to spread." Metal for bells is often about 74 to 85 per cent copper and 15 to 26 per cent of var ious tin alloys. Game of Roulette Kills Oakland Boy Oakland (UPD A 17-year-old youth played a game of.
