In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Western Hemisphere note: American and Canadian of ficials reportedly are discuss ing the sale of American nu clear weapons to Canada. One authoritative source says an agreement may have been reached already. Canada would be the first nation to obtain atomic arms from the United States. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thursday, August 7, 1958 5 COMMENT: IF WE CAN'T TRUST CANADA. WE CAN'T TRUST ANYBODY. FEDERAL spending note: Federal budget director Maurice Stans warns the con gress that federal spending might reach to a total of 400 billion dollars by 1963. (1963 is five years off, and presum ably he means that federal spending will average 80 bil lion dollars a year for the next five years.) ! He made the statement when questioned by a house committee about the adminis tration request for a bill rais ing the national debt ceiling to 288 billion dollars. FOR the benefit of those who contend that big fed eral spending means. big na tional prosperity, let's keep the situation straight in our minds. It works like this: The government takes the money out of your pocket in the form of taxes and spend' it That means that YOU DON'T HAVE IT IN YOUR POCKET TO SPEND AS YOU CHOOSE. MORE federal spending stuff: President Eisenhow er has vetoed a 6 Vi billion dollar appropriations bill. He said in his veto message that the extra 589 million dollars added to the original bill would unnecessairly push up the deficit. Some Washington congress ional leaders think the veto will put some federal agencies on SHORT MONEY RATIONS until next year (meaning that if the veto stands some fed eral deoartments may not have money enough to main tain their establishments on the scale to which they have become accustomed.) THAT recalls a statement in a recent letter from a Washington friend. He says: "From all I can hear, the rest of the country has been feeling the recession bite. Here in Washington, D. C, though, the economic picture is VERY BRIGHT. Washing ton's biggest payroll industry is government and as a' result of the recent increase in their pay government employees are spending 10 per cent more money in town. "Not only that, but every body got enough in a retro active pay check to make a down payment on a new auto mobile or maybe a new house. "As a result, business here In Washington is BOOMING and there is no recession talk." Authorities Seek Oregon Family North Bend, Ore. (UPD A widespread search was started Wednesday when au thorities were notified that a young married couple and their 3V'2-month-old son have been missing from their home here since Wesdnady.
