The Hollywood Scene Hollywood (UPD It does n't cost a nickle to see one of the best movies in town, a 50-year-old charmer made by a French magician whose films were mixing "live" ac tors with cartoon characters before Walt Disney was born. The movie, "The Golden Spectacles," belongs to the film library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and now is being converted -to 16 mm safety film for preservation purposes by Kemp Niver, a leading specialist in the film reclama tion field. Niver makes documentaries and educational films on a full-time basis and works on the academy library as his avocation. "Up to 1948, when safety film was introduced, all film for theatre projection was on nitrate stock," he explained. "In spite of all care and pre caution, nitrate film shrinks By HAZEL JOHNSON United Press Writer and disintegrates with time." Can Be Salvaged That was what was happen ing to the collection before Niver came up with a means of salvaging the molding film. This is accomplished by re photographing each frame of the film. "Another three or four years and there wouldn't have been anything left to salvage," Niver said, opening a con tainer labeled "W. S. Hart" to illustrate his point. The pungent odor of decay was strong as he handled the film, each frame hand-colored as was the technique in the pre-Technicolor days. The celluloid was laced with rot and buckled with an almost alligator-like finish. i Niver is adamant on the subject of preserving movie classics for historical purposes if no other reason. "Cecil B. DeMille. doesn't have a print of his silent mov ies that he can project," Niver said. "And the same is true of the other early movie mak ers." Storage Costly "They pay storage all these years, and even if it's on their own lot they're paying stor age, and all that's left are cans of a highly-inflammable powder which gives off a poi sonous gas when burned and no film. "It's like paying for a barn f ul of hay that's not edible. It's silly to pay storage on it." The film was made in 1898 by the magician, George Me lies, was one of the first of the Academy's collection to be converted. Niver has 100 other movies including John Bunny comedies filmed in 1907; "Enoch Arden", with Lillian Gish, produced i n 1911; "Man's Genesis," with Mas Marsh and Robert Her ron in 1912 and "Les Misera bles" filmed in France in 1913. . Men at Standard Stations and Chevron Dealers go to school to learn the best ways to care for your car, from tires to top. But our training doesn't stop there ... i ii li Z3 ; mm jjilLj Si We go by the book. When it comes to lubrication, for instance, we have charts that show us how to take care of every make of car, imported and American. They guide us to each grease fitting . . . and through inspections oftires, transmission, master brake cylinder and the other points that need regular, knowing attention. This extra care means your car is safe from wear and guaranteed free from squeaks for a f.ull 1000 miles. It's an other reason why every independent survey shows motorists rate the service at the sign of the Chevron "best in the West." And why more Western motorists carry a Chevron National Credit Card for their driving needs. The best way to complete the lubrication work is with an oil change. We recommend RPM Supreme Motor Oil. Its exclusive Detergent-Action compounding keeps parts so clean, protects them so well, engines can outlast the car it self! Check your sticker, and see if you aren't due for a change to this kind of protection.
