    Traveler in Small
Villages of Turkey
Accepted by People
By JERRY LIEBMAN
(Last in a Series)
The traveler in the small
villages of Turkey will find
himself accepted with pleas
ure. There is none of the fear
and suspicion of the stranger
that can sometimes be felt
in provincial villages.
A tourist need know only
a few words of the language
and this is true, I should
think, in most places of the
world. The Turkish words for
yes, no, please, thank you,
hello, goodbye, when, beau
tiful and the word for his
profession will suffice. It
does seem strange, however,
to be in a country whose
language roots differ so far
from English or any of the
languages I know. Signs are
meaningless and defy being
pieced together with scraps
of French, English, Spanish
and other Latin-derived lan
guages. AN UNHAPPY ERROR
Billings, Mont. (UPD After
Pepe le Pew, a tame, deodor
ized skunk, escaped Monday
night, his owners were happy
to hear a skunk had been
spotted in the basement of
a nearby residence. The own
ers, telephone operators
Frances Moore and Jessie
Guthrie, went to the scene
and captured the skunk.
Wrong skunk.
1 have developed quite a
vocabulary of pointing and
play a game of charades each
day to get what I am after.
I should be up to a philoso
phical discussion soon.
Traveler Advised
The traveler in Turkey is
advised to bring along a good
ly supply of patience, as well,
since this is an oriental coun
try and buses, for example, do
not run on schedule. They
may leave late, or even early,
but not on schedule. If .not
enough passengers can be
gathered, they do not leave
at all.
Food can be ordered by go
ing into the kitchen and point
ing. This also gives a chance
to inspect the cleanliness, but
do not be too fussy or you
might never eat. Traveling
has taught me that it is easiest
to carry a supply of Halizone
tablets for drinking water
and paregoric for the results
of bad food. Trust to a healthy
internal system and let it go
at that. Water is a danger,
of course, but I am delighted
to say Turkish beer and wine
are wonderful. So why care?
If you are at all shy, stay
at home. The Turks get im
mense fun out of my charades
and attempts to speak the lan
guage. The entire restaurant
joins . in the good-natured
scene. Luckily, so do I. A
laugh is the best possible
thing to bring from America.

FOLLOW AT SAFE DISTANCE
. v
A real hazard on the road Is the bumper-hugger
the driver who follows 10 feet behind the car ahead
while traveling 50 miles per hour. Following too close .
to another car results in many traffic accidents, and
rear-end collisions are generally very serious. Safe fol
lowing distance depends on many factors, such as
speed, traffic, weather, car ond light conditions. It also
is affected by the driver's alertness, reaction time and
physical condition.
According to HOW TO DRIVE, a book for adult
drivers published by the American Automobile Asso
ciation, a simple rule to observe is this: Stay slightly
more than one car length behind the car you are fol
lowing for each ten miles per hour of your speed.

'Fringe' Benefits
Now Major Items .
Washington (UPD The
U. S. Chamber of Commerce
says wages are no longer an
accurate measure of a work
er's income nor of an employ
er's cost of doing business.
The reason: "fringe" benefits
have become major items in
the worker's receipt from his
boss.
Dr. Emerson P. Schmidt,
director of economic research
for the chamber.s aid a sur
vey showed average fringe
benefits totaled $981 in 1957
compared to $162 in 1955. He
said the survey included 1,020
firms and was the "most com
plete of its kind." .
owner William L. Johnson,
54.
Johnson charges Williams
and United Auto Workers
President Walter P. Reuther
"have stolen the. Democratic
party from the real Demo
crats." " ,
But Williams has ignored
Johnson and campaigned in
stead for a "massive repudi
ation of the Republican re
cession." But Johnson joined college
professor Paul D. Bagwell, 45,
the unopposed GOP candidate
for governor, to blame the
plight of Michigan's 400,000
jobless on Williams' "antag
onism" toward industry.
The primary also will pro
vide a measure of Williams'
stature as a Democratic pres
idential contender in 1960. A
sizeable vote for Johnson
would indicate to some that
Williams had lost political !
glitter.
