nunareas of people studied
for manv vears nine mnh
statistical research, convinced
me long ago that that even
140 mm. of systolic pressure
found in a young man or
woman shows that some
trouble is likely to come
later.
Some years ago, Dr. Robert
L. Levy, Brigadier Gen.
Charles C. Hillman. Drs Wil.
liam B. Stroud and Paul D.
White made a study of 22,741
medical records of army of
ficers. The doctors were ahl
to see what happened medi
cally to those officers as they
kept coming up for reexam
ination each year during
periods ranging in length up
to a quarter of a century.
They found that usuallv
when a man showed a slight
increase in blood Dressure in
his youth he later developed
a definite high blood pressure.
Perhaps, as a result of this,
in these 22,741 cases, the rate
for disability retirement for
diseases of the heart, blood
vessels or kidneys was defin
itely higher among the men

Rogue River National for

timber receipts for the fiscal
year 1958, according to an an
nouncement from the U.S.
Forest Service.
Receipts from grazing fees
totalled $6,684.81, power re

receipts $13,651.53. Total re
ceipts were $2,813,361.25.
These figures were includ

from the national forests of
the region amounted to over
$46 million in the fiscal year
1958, according to Regional
Forester J. Herbert Stone of
the U.S. Forest Service. This
is a drop from the $56,500,000
received during the previous
fiscal year.
Leading Forests
The leading forests, accord

(Oregon) $3,048,563; Mt. Bak

three other forests had re

million dollars.
By law, 25 per cent pf the
receipts from national forests

Shingles v
Every week I get a number
of letters from elderly per
sons who have had an attack
of shingles the little blisters
which follow the course of
one of the nerves which run
between two ribs. They are
due to an infection of a gang
lion on the nerve with virus
of chicken-pox. In" the cases
of young people, an attack of
shingles usually does not
amount to much; they are
soon over it; but in the cases
of old people, shingles can
become a terrible trial, as
when the attack is "followed
by a neuralgia which cannot
be relieved by any known
medicine. Doctors have tried
cutting the nerves to the area;
but those who have done such
work tell me that they are
not satisfied with the results.
Often the operation does not
work, or it helps only for a
few days or weeks.
Some people tell me that
what helps most is to apply
pressure on the area; some
say a vibrator helps; others
anesthetize the area tempor
arily with an ethyl chloride
spray, or by the application
of a strong menthol ointment
such as can be obtained in
any drug store. Often the pa
tient has to take sedatives
especially at night so he .or
she can get some rest.

ers will understand that it is

the counties will be made aft
er final verification and audit

plained. The counties will
share somewhat over $11,000,
000. The law earmarks the
money returned to the coun
ties for the benefit of public
roads and schools.
The five counties which re
ceived the largest amounts
from last year's receipts in
Oregon were Lane, Douglas,
Linn, Klamath and Clacka
mas. In Washington the five
leading counties were Ska
mania, Jefferson, Lewis,
Whatcom and Clallam.
Stone said, "In addition to
the money that is retained in
the federal treasury and that
returned to local govern
ments, the national forests
contribute to the local wel
fare through investments and
permanent improvements;
payrolls, other expenditures,
and through furnishing such
vital resources as water, rec
reation and wildlife."
