GRIGG United Press International' London (CPU The shad ow of unemployment gather ed like an angry small cloud over Britain today. It still is not on a scale to compare with the grim Thir ties, when some two million Britons were jobless. But for the first time in 20 years the threat of large scale unemployment is ringing the alarms bells in this country. Both government and labor unions fear Britain and much of continental Europe may be whipped by the backlash of the U. S. recession next win ter. The result, they fear, may be the highest unemploy ment since the breadlines and hunger riots of the early Thirties. About 450,000 Britons, or a little more than two per cent of the nation's working force, are jobless at the mom ent. That still falls for short of the seven per cent of the labor force out of jobs in the United States. Labor Leaders Worried But it is enough to flash red lights in government and labor union offices. A worried deputation from the Trades Union Congress, Britain's largest labor organ ization, called on Chancellor of the Exchequer TJerick Heathcoat-Amory and warned that if the present trend con tinues there will be 750,000 jobless by January. The deputation appealed to the government to prime the economic pumps and come up with a new budget in the fall in which it would increase its own spending, cut taxes and restore investment cuts.' But the chancellor told him his first priority was to main tain the strength of the pound and keep prices stable. He re fused to press any panic but tons for the time being. Restrictions Eased - - However, the government earlier this year began easing the economic screws it ap plied last fall when the coun try was threatened with run away inflation and bank ruptcy. The bank rate already has been pushed down twice from seven per cent to its present five per cent. A further cut back to four-and-a-half per cent is widely predicted. The credit .squeeze on bank lend ing has been lifted. Just before Parliament left on ' .its summer recess, the government lifted all restric tions on industrial building projects in areas where un employment is above the na tional average. Britons are - worried be cause unemployment is begin ning to hit the basic industries on which the nation's whole economic prosperity stands or falls coal mining, iron and steel, transport, agriculture, fishing and merchant shipping. Oregon Woman Car Wreck Victim Bu.ellton, Calif. (UPD Three persons were killed and another critically injured Sunday in a head-on collision on U. S. 101 five miles north of here. One of the victims was identified as Mrs. Albert Neet, of Myrtle Creek, Ore. Member-Load of Domiciliary Rises The average daily member load at the Veterans Admin istration' domiciliary center, Camp White, for the fiscal year 1958-59 has been in creased by 65, to 925, accord ing to Banks I. Paul, acting manager. During the current quarter the domiciliary will average 875 members, Paul said. The next two quarters' the member-load' will be increased to average 975, and the final, quarter it will be reduced to 875 again.' This fluctuation is designed to meet seasonal de mand, according to Paul. The increase, authorized by the chief medical director, Veterans administration, Washington, D. C, does not require additional facilities, Paul reported. Furthermore," he said, the operating budget, does not permit hiring of addi tional staff personnel.
