Main Mr. Morse: Mr. Chairman, appreciate this opportunity to urge once gain establishment of a general medical and sur gical hospital at Camp White, Ore. As many of my consti tuents know, as well as my colleagues in the Senate and House, I feel very strongly about the welfare of the more than 60,000 veterans in the area served by Camp white In fact, I have a particular interest in this veterans dom iciliary since it was I who originally introduced the bill in the Senate that was re sponsible for establishment of the camp. I have visited Camp White many times in the past few years and I ant thoroughy aware of the importance and urgency of providing adequate medical facilities there for the thousands of deserving vet erans whom it is supposed to serve. Introduces Bill As long ago as March, 1954 I introduced a bill for the establishment of just such medical and surgical hospital at Camp White, a bill which unhappily, did not meet with favorable action. But I have not forgotten, nor have I given up the hope that the Veterans administration will again ex amine the facts and recon sider its decision. Let me once again point out that the need for medical facilities "at Camp White is of paramount urgency more than 60,000 veterans, many of whom are in constant need of medical attention, await this committee's favorable ac tion. As I pointed out on the Senate floor in 19S4, buildings erected by the Federal Gov ernment at Camp White are standing idle, while patients in need of care must travel 300 miles north to Portland or even farther to the south in search of professional treat ment. This is an utter waste of time and money, to say nothing of needless neglect of the health of veterans who were willing to risk their lives for their country in time of WATKINS-MALONE REALTY ANOTHER HERD OF VALUES LASSOED BY OL' HOME-LY HOUSER OL HOMELY HOUSER SAYS HELP! The lack of a hospital for these veterans seems inexcus able in view of the plant now in existence at Camp White A medical and surgical hos pital could be installed at this location at a cost of about S750 to $1,000 per bed, as compared with approximately 518,000 per bed for a new vet erans hospital. Inadequate Personnel We have been told that such an installation is impracti cable because of inadequate medical personnel. From my own personal observation and from statements made to me by physicians and business men in the Medford area, how ever, I have the feeling that highly competent physicians. surgeons, nurses, and labora tory technicians are anxious and able to cooperate in staf fing a hospital at Camp White should the funds be made available. Mr. Chairman, I again point up the extreme need for general medical and surgical hospital at Camp White, Ore. and I urge the cooperation of this committee in every way possible. The exchange, arranged by Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) and Soviet Ambas sador Mikhail A. Menshikov, took place at the Brussels World's Fair July 26. . Jack Marks, director of the Portland Zoological Gardens, accompanied the bears after taking the beavers to Brus sels.
