Blaze Destroys
Barn at Albany
Albany (DPD A spectac
ular fire swept through a big
barn on the outskirts of Al
bany during the noon hour
Wednesday ewhile a farmer
and his wife sat eating lunch
in their home only 200 feet
away.
- A passing neighbor saw the
flames leaping from the barn
' of Jesse Griese and drove
into the yard to alert Grieser
and tis wife. Grieser and the
neighbor chased several cows
from the barn and managed
to remove come equipment
before the blaze leveled the
80xl50-foot dairy barn.
Heat was so intense from
the fire that the Albany fire
men could get no closer than
50 feet when they were called
to the scene by Mrs. Grieser,
Grieser estimated the loss
. at $20,000 to $25,000. Destroy
ed with the barn were 1,300
bales of hay and some farm
ing equipment. An adjoining
milk shed and milk machin
ery were also lost.
Silage in two large concrete
silos was also damaged by the
Intense heat and flames.
Grieser said the blaze may
have been caused by a spark
from machinery that failed
to flame up until he had gone
into the house to eat.
