STILL PACES PCL San Francisco (UPD Andre Rodgers, the Phoenix Giants infielder who has turned from banjo hitter into fence wreck er, stayed ahead in the Pacific Coast league batting chase on two fronts with a .399 average and 25 homeruns. ' While the Canadians breezed to a 4-1 victory over Spokane Tuesday" night, Sacramento made it two straight over Phoenix, 7-0. and Portland shaded San Diego, 2-1, in a 13-inning marathon. Vancou ver's win left the 'Mounties with a 11 2 game margin over the Giants and a three-game bulge "over the slipping Padres. Seattle blanked Salt Lake, 4-0, as the fourth-place Bees continued their slide down ward. The loss shoved the Bees nine games back of Van couver. Palica Wins 12th Erv Palica picked up his 12th victory of the season as he allowed Spokane only five hits. The Indians scorea "their only run when Jim Williams unloaded a splo four-bagger in the fifth inning. Owen Friend and Jim Dyck led the Mountie attack with a home run apiece. Catcher Charlie White contributed three safeties. The loss went to Connie Grob, who went the distance for the losers. The win gave the Mounties a 2-0 series lead. At San Drego, Portland broke ( a five-game losing string when Don Nicholas singled in Ed Winceniak with the deciding" run in the top of the 13th. Winceniak had singled and gone to second base on a fielder's choice. The Padres sent the game into extra innings when Al Jones slammed a solo homer in the eighth. The victory went to Beav er starter Elmer Singleton, al though Vic Lombardi came in to -pitch the 13th. Pete Wojey, the third of three Padre hurlers, got the loss. The Sac's collected 14 hits off a trio of Phoenix hurl ers. Seattle, behind the eight hit pitching of Ted Wieand, handed Salt Lake its sixth loss in the last eight games to drop the Bees to their worst position in more than a month. The Bees staged a mild threat in the seventh on singles by Joe Christopher and Dick Barone, but Wieand fanned two pinch-hitters to end the inning. Sxuzina Faces Webb Tonight New York (UPD German middleweight Franz Szuzina craves victory instead of blue- blooded martyrdom tonight in his first Madison Square Gar den fight with Spider Webb. "Maybe I get-the decision if I win yah?" said the stubby, muscular carpenter from Bremen. He said that because he had dropped a very unpopular split verdict to Joey Giardello at a "black tie" dinner fight in Washington, D.C., June 11. That was the night Wash ington society leaders made a martyr of Franz by forgetting social amenities and booing the decision thunderously. Columbus Tips Royals in Pair United Press International The Columbus Jets, taking their hopes for a fourth-place finish in the International league on the road with them, are off to a running start against the northern clubs. GAME UNCERTAIN rf Portland (UPD An Oct. 10 appearance by the St. Louis Cardinals is still not a cer tainty, according to Don Walker, member of the Port land Beavers board of direc tors. Walker said the board would first have to approve the exhibition game and he pointed out that costs of reno vating the stadium turf after football games have been played on it might make the game impractical from a fi nancial standpoint. 1 V. - ,r-- --- - .
