Like a girl who becomes overly absorbed in her physi cal appearance and uses much too much makeup, the boy who becomes exclusively con cerned about his body has a feeling of inadequacy and seeks some artificial means of gaining confidence. Because they do not put themselves to any real tests outside the confines of their rooms, these adolescents don't gain confidence they need. It takes a lot of tact and understanding to steer a youngster off this course. Per haps the best way is to avoid criticism of the undesirable activity, but to show concern for the teen-ager's real desire to prove his worth. Greg can't be forced to get interested in things as far afield from his current ab sorption as photography and music, but perhaps his father or some other man in the fam ily can get him interested in competitive sports. It should be pointed out to him that sports like track, swimming, boxing, wrestling, football and baseball develop a sense of rhythm that is es sential t6 physical fitness. He should be forced to realize that the best athletes are not mere beef. If college is a real pos sibility for Greg, it might be helpful to encourage him to think in terms of teaching physical training. This will help him to focus on a goal outside of perfecting his own body. (Copyrighf 1958, General Features, Corp.) FROHN MAYER & LOWRY Attorneys for Plaintiffs Post Office Address: . 200 Cooley Theatre Building Medford, Oregon Time Grange News One hundred Grangers and guests, including square dance enthusiasts, were entertained by Upper Applegate Grange at an open house program Friday, the feature of which was a square dance presents tion by the Rogue Valley Black Lighters. Other numbers on the pro gram, which was arranged by Grace Buck's unit, were piano solos by Mary Beth Ramsey; two groups of western style songs by Rodney Snider, Who played his own accompani ments on the guitar; colored slides of wild flowers filmed in the Upper Applegate area by Wilfred Pearson and Mrs. Robert Sorber; a group, of re ligious songs in four-part har mony sung by Mary Beth Ramsey, Joyce and Zoanne Hawkins, and Cheryl Adams; a humorous story by Stella Offenbacher; and a travel ogue of Middle Eastern coun tries by Ella Dorn. Mr. and Mrs. Dorn toured Lebanon, Syria and Persia in 1956. Beirut, Mrs. Dorn de scribed as a beautifully clean city built on a series of hills similiar to San Francisco, in an area which, she believes, grows the most delicious or anges produced anywhere in the entire world. Damascus, the oldest inhabited city in ex istence, is surrounded by a green paradise watered by the seven channels of a river. The ultra-modern hotel supplied throughout with exquisite hand-loomed linens, where the travelers stayed, is situated on the bank of one of the seven channels that is walled with rock. Like the cities of Leba non, Damascus is kept spot lessly clean, and the Dorns wakened one morning to find workmen equipped with brooms and brushes industri ously scrubbing the rock walls along the river channel to free them of moss and algae. Many points of religious in terest in the Middle East were visited, including the spot on the Damascus rd., where Saul, on his way to persecute the Christians, was stricken with blindness, and the home of Ananias on the street called Straight, where his sight was restored; the Moslem mosque where tradition claims the head of John, the Baptist, is entombed, and the tomb in Jerusalem where his body is said to rest. Mrs. Dorn told of the impressive Moslem call to prayer which rings out five times daily, of the cleanliness and reverent silence which prevails within the mosques, and of the attitude of prayer of the worshippers which de notes total and complete sub mission to the Deity. She also described seeing the vast herds of domestic animals: camels, sheep, goats, and donkeys being moved to sum mer pasture in the same man ner that has been followed each year since the days of Abraham. She told of visiting .the ruins Baalbek whose ex cavation was commenced in 1924. This ancient city dating back to 56 B. - C, was con structed with the largest building stones known to man. These stones are 14 by 17 by 69 feet, and weighing 400 tons each, and no one knows MONTOOMERV CHAIN SAW DEMONSTRATION by factory representative . All Day Thursday J uly 31 ". FREE COKES on our parking lot, rear of store By Jimmy Hatlo MfSfa how they were moved from the quarry to the construction site. The Rogue Valley Black Lighters, a group of four couples, derives their name from the fact that their dances are executed in specially de signed costumes under black light. They presented two square dances, "Dream On" and "Shiek of Araby", a round dance, "Hour Waltz,,; a quadrille, "Isle of Capri", and as encore numbers, a square dance entitled "Bye and Bye", and a quardrille, "Grand Square." Personnel of the troup included Lois and Buzz Dibble, Georgia and Fred Foust, Rose and Chris Wolff, Medford; Esther and Earl M. Swift, Ashland; and Billy Foust, technician. Refreshments of coffee and cakes were served following the program by Mrs. Anna Scott and Mrs. Florence Lance and Gail Buffington, after which the regular Grange session convened. Overseer Pearl Byrne pre sided in the absence of the newly elected Worthy Mas ter, George Redhead, who suffered an attack of virus pneumonia. Other illness reported by the relief committee included that of Hugh Scovell, who has suffered two heart attacks while convalescing from ma jor surgery. Mrs. Ina Pursel is still in the hospital after major spinal surgery, Ernest Dorn is convalescing at home from a severe ankle injury, and Mrs. Viola Finley and Glenn Saltmarsh have recov ered from minor illnesses. The Forbes Browns were welcom ed back after a long absence due to the illness of Brown. , In connection with the na tional contest in which Up per Applegate Grange is en tered, Grange members were reminded to keep track of all community services rendered during the next two months. A communication was read from Robert Sorber, Apple gate Valley chairman for Ore gon's Centennial celebration, asking cooperation of the Grange in work of his com mittee. Action was deferred until the next meeting of the Grange on Aug. 8. Grace N. Pearson Publicity Chairman Roxy Ann Grange Roscoe Roberts suggested during a recent meeting of the Roxy Ann Grange that the county be petitioned to put stoD signs at all streets and roads entering Spring st. Home-economics chairman Verda Quackenbush, reported the HEC picnic was held at Harriet ClaypooFs ranch on Williams creek. Twenty-two members, three children and three guests were present. Next servine committees for the Grange are -the Offords, Van Ortwicks and the Morth- lands. The next HEC meeting will be held at the Grange hall Thursday, July 31. Anna Van Ortwick and Guernith Slater will be hostesses. Charles Whitcher reported the cattle market was strong, the lamb and hog market down, good hay cheaper than has been for. a lone time. Milk cows are bringing a good price, he said. Those planning to attend are asked to Taring a covered dish and table service. During the regular meeting of the Grange July 24, a short business meeting was held. Thus a difference was shown between identical and "fraternal" twins, a dif ference regarded statistically as highly "significant." The statistics were used by Sir Ronald A. Fisher, profes sor of genetics at Cambridge University who is widely known as the "father of mod ern statistics." He was seek ing information as a guide in the continuing scientific argument over the meaning of the large statistical studies which connect cigarette smok ing with deaths from lung cancer. Some statistical studies have been accepted by official public health bodies both in the United States and abroad smoking is a cause of lung cancer. But Dr. Fisher and several other well known sci entists argue that they only show a "statistical associa tion" and "cause" is not at all demonstrated. In common with all other geneticists, Sir Ronald loves identical twins because they stem from one fertilized egg and so share the same hered ity in the tiniest detail. What ever can be proved about the influence of their heredity on the physical, chemical, and emotional make-ups of peo ple, is provable through one egg twins.
