The women's meet is scheduled for Aug. 7, 8, 9 and 10, with first night games at Eagle Point and Memorial stadium, Camp White, and all remaining games at Camp Giants Sweep Twin Bill; Yanks Ahead & 5 Games United Press International Bill Rigney loves kids, es pecially those San Francisco youngsters of his we may surprise the "Old Man" by getting him named the "man ager of the year." "Ain't those kids of mine terrific?" Rigney beamed with obvious pride after they swept a twi-night twin-bill from the Phillies Monday night to move into a virtual first-place tie with Milwaukee only one per centage point off the pace. Rigney, who was down in sixth place 14V4 games off the pace a year ago today, had ample reason to be proud of his young players. Youngsters Do It In the opener, 19-year-old southpaw Mike McCormick beat, the Phils, 3-2, for his eighth victory of the season Giants TraiDing League Leaders By .003. Point Cincinnati, Ohio (UPD The San Francisco Giants, trailing league-leading Milwaukee by only .001 percentage point, open a three-game series to night against the Cincinnati Redlegs. Manager Bill Rigney indi cated that Don Johnson may draw his first starting assign ment for the Giants but Stu Miller and Ramon Monzant are also ready to go to the mound. Whoever draws the pitching chore will have to be sharp to match the performances turned in Monday by Mike McCormick and Ruben Go mez. Both went the distance as the Giants edged Philadel phia twice 3-2 and 2-1. McCormick was as hot as the weather in the first game. He consistently pitched his way out of trouble rapped a single and a double, and scored a run. He came home in the fifth inning ahead of Felipe Alou, who smashed one into the stands. The Giants scored the win ning run in the top of the ninth on an error by ace Philadelphia reliever Dick Farrell who took the defeat. FOOTBALL COACH SEEN AS FUNNY WITNESS . Washington (UPD Coach Duffy Daugherty of Michigan State nosed out Manager Ca sey Stengel of the New York Yankees today as the season's funniest congressional wit ness. Sen. Estes Kefauver (D Tenn.), the chairman and "straight man" of the Senate anti-trust sub-committee, awarded the comedy laurels to Daugherty on the basis of his testimony Monday on a bill to exempt professional sports from anti-trust laws. "You caused us more merri ment than Mr. Stengel," Ke fauver told Daugherty. "I'm afraid I can't claim any of Mr. Stengel's ability, senator," Daugherty replied. Stengel captivated the sub committee, and a large group of spectators earlier this month with his . celebrated ability to talk sideways, like a sand crab runs. Daugherty had a smaller but none the less appreciative audience composed mostly of subcommittee aides, newsmen and Coach Bud Wilkinson of Oklahoma, a fellow witness who led the laughter. Wilkinson was particularly against only two defeats. Then 20-year-old Orlando Cepeda singled home what proved to be the winning run in a 2-1 nightcap triumph. All other National League clubs were idle. The New York Yankees stretched their , American League lead $o 15 games again when they bombarded five Kansas City pitchers for 16 hits in a 14-7 victory. Mickey Mantle slammed his 27th and 28th homers and GU McDougald entered into the spirit of the occasion by rap ping his 9th and 10th home runs. Bob Cerv of the A's also hit two, his 27th and 28th, and Hal Smith belted his third of the season. Rookie Zack Monroe was credited with the victory al though he gave way to Johnny In the second game, Gomez came up with his first victory and first complete game since May 25 but he had to fight for it. Jack Meyer of the Phils took the loss, although he struck out 12 Giants. Gomez allowed the Phils only four hits, while the Gi ants came up with six. Or lando Cepeda had half of San Francisco's hits in the night cap and two in the opener for a total of five in eight trips to the plate. u While the Giants will be trying to continue their win ning ways against the Red legs, they will be hoping for a little support from their fel low Calif ornians from Lo's Angeles. The cellar-dwelling Dodgers are playing at Milwaukee and they hold an 8-4 edge over the league leaders this season. But regardless of how the Braves make out, Rigney has confidence that his boys can hold their own. "They say we haven't the best pitching staff, the best hitting team or the best de fensive club," Rigney said. "But I'll take this bunch of mine until a better one comes along." - amused by Daugherty's' bland suggestion that Michigan State enjoys success on the gridiron because it draws its football players from its regular stu dent body. Realizing that he was sur rounded by skeptics, the squat tousled haired Daugherty fin ally conceded astute recruiting had more to do with produc ing a winning team than as tute coaching. Daugherty was followed in the witness chair by Coach Bowden Wyatt of Tennessee who also was something of a laugh-getter. His best line was fed to him by Kefauver, a Ten nessee alumnus, who asked what kind of team he would have this year. . "Very young and inexper ienced," Wyatt replied. IMPROVEMENTS Stanton, Del. Dick Tom anek yielded the Yanks' first eight runs and was charged with the loss. Lollar hit his homer off Tex Clevenger in the fourth to put Chicago ahead, 5-4. The Sena tors tied the score in the fifth, however, and the White Sox pushed across the deciding run in the sixth on Fox's triple and RaytBoone's infield out, Turk Lown, the fourth of Chicago's five pitchers, was credited with the victory while Dick Hyde was the loser. Leo Kiely walked Xharley Maxwell with the bases load ed and two out in the ninth to force in the winning run and give Detroit, a 5-4 triumph over Boston. , Kiely walked in the win ning run after rain had de layed the game for an hour and nine minutes in the ninth. Boston hopped on starter Al Cicqtte.for four runs in the fifth but Al Kaline, who col lected four of Detroit's 11 hits, singled home two runs to tie the score in the seventh.
