Blocks Columbia River Expressway Portland !UPD The Colum bia river express highway was blocked for more than an hour Monday night as the re sult of a smash-up involving three trucks and a car. The driver of one of the trucks, Charles E. White, 38, of Walla Walla, Wash., was injured. He was reported in "fair" condition today in Providence Hospital. Three other drivers involved were uninjured. White's tractor-traiier over-, turned, spilling oil over the highway. Multnomah County sheriffs deputies held up traffic on the highway for more than an hour while fire truck hosed the oil from the pavement and a state highway sanding truck sanded the roadway. Others Involved Other drivers Involved were William A. Milburn, 30, of Sunnyside, Wash., driver of a tractor-trailer loaded with roofing materials; Jun ior Jerome Linder, 31, of Grandview, Wash., driver of a dractor-trailer loaded with steel; and Anthony J. Fitzger ald, 45, of The Dalles, driver f the car. Investigating officers re ported that Linder and Mil burn were parked on the highway shoulder, straighten ing a shifted load when White appgrently0struck the other two-trucks, then overturned on fie highway. Fitzgerald following White, said his car struck a set of dual wheels that were sheared off White's truck as it overturned. MAIL TRIBUNE, McdferJ, Oregon, Tuesday, July 29, 1938 3 O Manila-Seattle Air Hop Delayed Manila (UPI) American flier Marion (Pat) Boling post poned today his scheduled nonstop flight from Manila to Seattle because of typhoon Doris. Boling had planned to take off at dawn Wednesday. In stead, he may take off at 5 - ml J TU T3Kii;m- a.m. iiiuiauajr. xiic x iimt- pines Weather Bureau advis ed Boling typhoon Doris was q moving northeastward along his proposed route. Meanwhile, weather and aviation stations in Taipeh, Okinawa, Tokyo, and Seattle, as well as the U.S. Coast Guard, have been alerted to keep in touch with Boling during his 6,682 mile flight. Boling held two test flights today in preparation for his big hop. Jf he succeeds, he will break the record for a nonstop flight in a small plane set by Bill Odom in 1949. Odom's record was 5,273 miles. Boling said he talked with his wife, Joyce, by telephone. TMfe family home is in Palo Alto, Calif. She said she will make a solo flight to Boise, Idaho, to meet him there after he lands at Seattle. Mother Kills Son To Previni Marriage Nuernberg, Germany (UPD PoJicg here have arrested a 60-year-ojid -widow on charges of murdering her son to keep him from marrying and leav ing her alone. Jcnefine Fischhold was tracked down in nearby Fuerth less than 24 hours after her 28-year-old son Rudi was found with his throat cut in what apparently was meant to have been a murder and sui cide. A letter written by Frau Fischhold, found beside her son's body, said: "I am passing from this life and taking Rudi with me ... Please bury us in the same grave. We want to be together." Rudi was to have been mar ried today, and police say that his mother whose husband die.d last winter was afraid of bein left alone. o Fog, Accident Disrupt Airplanes New York (UPD Heavy fog and a runway accident com bined Monday night to dis . rupt operations at both New York airports. LaGuardia Airport was shut down, forcing the cancel lation of 50 flights and the di version of 20 incoming planes. Departures were resumed shortly after midnight, how ever. At Idlewild Airport, 50 in coming flights had to be di verted after a Northeast Air lines DC6B blew its four main landing gear tires while set ting down on the only run-waft- equipped for instrument landings.
