It always seemed that as soon as I sent my children off to school the telephone began ringing, the breakfast dishes stared at me, the wash shouted for attention, and every peddler within miles found his way to my door. After two hours of this one morning, when I was about to pull my hair and scream, the doorbell rang again and I raced to rebuff another salesman. I snatched the door open and stopped. , There stood a curly-headed three-year-old boy from next door with a bouquet of flowers clutched in his little fist. "Here," he said, "I picked these my self just for you." j My rage dissolved in a moment and, while I've forgotten many of the irritating incidents in my home, I've always re membered his innocent act of love. Mrs. G. A., Warrington, Fla. Benevolent Brain-Washing. This story hap pened when I was living in the Virgin Islands. The rector of the Episcopal church had a parrot whose cage stood near a window overlooking a principal residential street. Since there are few window panes in the islands, passersby took glee in teaching the parrot some choice, but high ly unepiscopal, language. Soon the parrot disappeared, but three weeks later it was back. Now, instead of curse words, the parrot was screeching at everyone, "Lord love you." The rector had given it a brain-washing. Sterling Sorensen, Pine River, Wis. The Right Side of the Tracks. An unpleasant office situation had de veloped, and all the way home in the car I poured out my troubles to my husband. Finally, he said, "Honey, here's the railroad tracks. After we cross it, let's leave the office behind." I took the hint and our daily ride home became more pleasant. Now, whenever one of us tends to let something bother us too much, the other will laugh and say, "Let's leave it on the other side of the tracks." Mrs. Anne Cook, Albany, Ga. 1 Two Strangers Visit America. My husband and I are making our first visit to your country, So far, it has been one lovely surprise after an other. I say "surprise" because in other countries we get a different view of the United States from your movies, novels, and magazines gangsters, juvenile delinquents, neurotic females, in security, unscrupulous ambition. I know everything is not beyond criticism here or anywhere but I think you should sometimes show the world more of your good things your happy family life, your magnifi cent outdoor scenery, and above all your unfail ing kindness. Remember, though some of your traditions are based on the Old World, there is much the Old World could learn from you. Mrs. Julio Martinez San Jose, Eugene, Ore.
