Fortietli Anniversary Celebrated by Couple Mr. and Mrs. E. Paul Kurz, 360 DeBarr avenue, were hon ored on their 40th wedding anniversary July 20 at an open house. Relatives and friends called during the afternoon. Attending the event were the five children of the couple, Louis Kurz, Walter Kurz, Earl Kurz, Mrs. Bruce Sexton, and David Kurz of Tacoma, Wash. The children and their wives and husband were hosts for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Kurz were married July 20, 1918 in Jacksonville. Mr. Kurz came to Oregon from Switzerland in 1913 and has been a resi dent of the valley since that time. Mrs. Kurz arrived in the valley as a child from Iowa. For the anniversary observ ance Mrs. Kurz wore a blue print nylon jersey dress. She was presented a corsage of red and white carnations In charge of the guest book were the Misses Barbara, Karen and Katherine Kurz, Hongr Students Listed by School Salem One MeSford stu dent received a straight "A" average during the spring semester at Willamette Uni versity and0five others were among those earning a grade average of B-plus or above. Miss Marilyn Parsons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Parsons, earned the perfect grade report. A 1957 graduate from Medford High school, she is a sophomore at Willam ette and holds an Elk Lum ber company scholarship. Other Medford students re ceiving over a B-plus are also graduates from Medford High school. Two of them, Mrs Constance Clark Lister, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hartley, and Thomas Gail, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Gail, were graduated from the university in June. Also earning B-plus grades are Miss Barbara Roach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Roach, a senior; Miss Sonja Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Peterson, a junior; and Frank Bash, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Bash, also a senior. Eastwood Group Attends Session Mrs. Richard M. Jones, Mrs. S. D. Earhart, Jackie Graber, and Mrs. William L. White, members of the ' Eastwood Baptist church, Medford, were among nearly 300 Oregon Baptist women attending the Oregon Baptist house party July 21-23 on the Linfield col lege campus in McMinnville. Guests were housed in Lin field dormitories, and meals were served in the college commons. Several mission aries were present for the three-day meeting. Mrs. Sexton, cut the cake and the three daughters-in-law assisted with the serving. Red candles and red and white flowers decorated the table and rooms. Mr. Kurz is a carpenter and cabinetmaker in the valley. Volunteers To Attend Scout Camp " The Girl, Scout established camp, Low1 Echo, will be the scene of a volunteers' week end August 16 and 17. This will be a camp outing for all women volunteers in Rogue Valley Area Council Girl Scouting, whether registered or not. It is being held to give volunteers an opportunity to visit and become acquainted with the facilities at Low Echo, and wth each other. Women planning to attend must register by letter or phone at the Girl Scout office, 500 East Main street, tele phone SPring 2-5912, by not later than August 8. A charge of $1.50 will be made to cover the cost of the four meals, Saturday lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast and dinner. There will be swimming, boating and sun bathing, archery, crafts, and a campfire program. Also planned are a tour of the camp and nearby beauty. spots. Campers may join in any or all or none, of these activities, as long as they are on time for meals. Any con tribution to the campfire pro gram in the way of skits, songs, readings or other activi ties will be welcome. Those attending should take a sleeping bag or bedroll, com fortable camping clothes, a warm packet or coat as nights get chilly, a swim suit, and toilet articles, the Scout office announces. Hospital Tour Planned by Club; To Hold Picnic Welcome Wagon club is planning a tour of Rogue Val 1 e y Memorial hospital for members and their husbands. The tour will be Thursday, July 31, at 7:30 P.M. and will be guided by the hospital per sonnel. The club held a progressive dinner for members and pros pective members recently which was attended by twenty couples. The group en joyed appetizers at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gil bert, the main course was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Brain. The Ste phen Mullins' served the des sert and the social hour which included dancing was at Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Caperna's home. The next scheduled event on the club's calendar will be a family picnic August 10. M. Setness, 733 Pine street Central Point. Mrs. Jones is the former Laural Marie Setness. The couple were married at the First Presbyterian church, Vancouver, Wash., June 28 at 2:30 o'clock in the afternoon. The Rev. John Doran officiat ed at the double ring event. Mr. Jones is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John I. Jones, route 1, box 180, Gold Hill. Blue and white flowers dec orated the Setness residence for the July 10 reception at tended by 100 relatives and friends.' For her wedding and the reception Mrs. Jones wore a blue suit with white accesso ries and a white orchid cor sage. Mrs. Evelyn Owens, Oak land, Calif., aunt of the bride, cut and served the tiered wed ding cake, and Miss Kay Ask- with, presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. I. F. Maier, grand mother of the bride, poured the coffee. Assisting with the serving was Miss Sally Elden. Miss Joan Skov was in charge of the guest book and Miss Nancy Hopper, Gold Hill, was at the gift table. Out of town guests includ ed Mr. and Mrs. H. Aring, Redlands, Calif., grandparents of the bridegroom. Among the other guests was I. F. Maier, grandfather of the bride. Mrs. Jones was honored July 15 at a shower given by Mrs. Steven Benston and Mrs. Victor Noel at the Benston home on Hanley road. Group Completes Red Cross CI ass Several southern Oregon women completed the class given recently by the Jack son County Chapter, Ameri can, Red Cross, for instructors for "Home Care of the Sick and Injured" under the direc tion of Miss Barbara Hirsch, nursing representative for Oregon. Those receiving certifica tion are Mrs. Rock Hutchings, Mrs. Roy Elmgren, Mrs. Thomas J. Donohue, Medford, Mrs. C. M. Starnes and Mrs. V. A. Sprinkle, Grants Pass; Mrs. William Riclrenbach and Mrs. Robert Stephensen, Ash land; Mrs . David Neville, Prospect and Mrs. Ann.Briggs, of Shady Cove. These instructors will each teach a class to lay persons starting August 28 at the Chapter house, 60 Hawthorne street. The course consists of seven lessons, two hours each. Anyone interested is urged by Red Cross officials to call SPring 2-4405 to register. Special Meeting Set for Rebekahs Gold Hill Mrs. Paul Thompson, noble grand of Amethyst Rebekah lodge, has announced that a special meet ing of the lodge is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30 at 8 o'clock in the Odd Fellow's Hall on Fourth avenue in Gold Hill. Purpose of the meeting is to hold a practice for a seating drill the lodge will present at the Rebekah convention which will be held in August at Central Point. Mrs. Thompson also said final arrangements will be made at the session Wednes day evening for the official visit of the president of the Rebekah Assembly of Oregon, Mrs. Edna Oster. It will be in August. 1 Travelers Return From Trip North Four valley residents have returned following a vacation trip into Canada. In the group were Mrs. May Brown, Mrs. Georgiana Beier, Medford, and Mrs. Brown's parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Bonham, Cen tral Point. The four spent some time in Victoria, Vancouver and Nanaimo, British Columbia, their visit coinciding wth that of Princess Margaret. The Med ford travelers report that they saw the royal vsitor twice, and enjoyed the province-wide celebration planned in her honor. The travelers made the trip by motor up through Portland and Seattle and returned home by way of the Washing ton and Oregon coast. Auxiliary Names New Committees; Dinner Planned Shady Cove - Trail Com mittees for the coming year were named at the July busi ness meeting of Shady Cove Trail Lions auxiliary, held at Rogue River lodge, Trail. Mrs. Earl Shepherd, new pres ident, conducted the meeting. Plans for a barbecue dinner to be held Saturday, August 2, were made. It will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Harmon. The next business meeting will be at Rogue River lodge August 6. Annual Tea Set At Skinner Home The annual silver tea of the Women's association of the First Presbyterian church will be held Tuesday, August 5, at the home of Mrs. R. A. Skinner, Hillside drive. The event will be held from 2 until 5 pjn. A program of music is ar ranged for the afternoon. Proceeds from the tea will be used to purchase medical supplies for various foreign mission fields. Mrs. E. G. Randolph and Mrs. Kenneth W. Cook are co-chairmen in charge of ar rangements. School Lunch Group Attends Annual Session Twenty - two co-ordinators and school lunch personnel from Jackson county, 13 . of them from Medford schools, attended the second school lunch conference held recent ly in uorvaiiis. The conference is sponsored jointly by the department of institutional management of the school of home economics, Oregon State college, and the school lunch section, Oregon D e p a r t m ent of education. More than 200 women attend ed the sessions. The program was planned to stimulate the interest of the group and to advance pro fessional growth through ac tive participation in. "group selected" problems. It was emphasized that the special aims of the program are to provide nutritionally bal anced lunches and to develop desirable food and eating hab its in children. Picnic Plans Made By Townsend Club Medford Townsend club will meet Wednesday July 30, at 11 a.m. for a potluck pic nic in the south side Haw thorne park. All club mem bers are to furnish their own table service. The state Townsend . club director, Finis L. Snodgrass, has written his plans to at tend the picnic. At last weeks club meeting a sum of money was voted to help reimburse the parade of states held at the Townsend National convention at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in June. The meeting closed with a pro gram. Stalker, who lived in Med ford for many" years and now makes her home in Toledo, Ohio, will arrive in Shady Cove this week to visit her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Stalker. Party Honors Natasha Bulkin Shady Cove Miss Natasha Bulkin celebrated her 17th birthday anniversary with an all-day party at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bulkin, Far Hills ranch, last Sunday. The young people went horseback riding and swam during the afternoon and in the evening Miss Bulkin open ed her presents. Miss Bulkin will be a senior in Eagle Point High school in the fall.
