MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtifori. Ores", Tuesday, July 22, 1938 Alan Molmes Gains RVCC. Golf Diadem Alan Holmes won the men's match play golf champion ship of Rogue Valley Country club Sunday. He trimmed Ed Hall 4 and 2 in a finale which went 34 of the scheduled 36 holes. The Sunday tussle followed a Saturday semi-final in which Hall edged Dr. Dave Boals 2 and 1. Holmes had defeated Dr. Bruce Stanley 1 up in an earlier semi. After the first three holes of the titular match Holmes had a 2 up jump. Hall evened the count by winning Nos. 4 and 5 holes and went on top by nabbing No. 7. Holmes didn't pull even until the 19th hole. He then went ahead with a par on the 22nd. He took 26 and 30 with pars and closed out the match on 34 with angther standard. Two Over Par For the route Holmes was two over par. He was two above regulation with a 74 for the first 18 and even par for the second trip around the links. Hall, who was 3 up on two occasions over Holmes, had one above par with 73 on the first jaunt around. He was five over for the closing laps. Hall was 2 up after the opening out nine and made it 3 ahead with a bird on 10. The gap shrank when Holmes took the next two greens with a bird and par. But Hall bird- ie-parred 13 and 14 to restore the 3 up spread. However, Holmes won three of the next four holes and the gap was down to 1 up for Hall at the 18-hole pause. On 19 Holmes evened. He lost 20 but got even again on 21 then jumped on top to stay. Bob Phillips won the first i flight final. He defeated Tom j Teutsch 6 and 4. Joe Brown makes his fifth defense of the lightweight crown against southpaw Ken ny Lane at the Houston (Tex.) Coliseum Wednesday night. Zora Folley and Pete Rade macher fight at the Los An geles Olympic, Friday night, for a possible shot at Floyd Patterson's title. Each bout will be televised nationally Brown - Lane. Wednesday, by ABC, and Fol-ley-Rademacher, Friday, by NBC. The latter contest also will be broadcast nationally. Brown of New Orleans, 32, Is favored at 12-5 to beat Lane of Muskegon, Mich., 26, be- SPORTS Butte Falls Nips Riddle Butte Fals Butte Falls handed Riddle its first defeat in the Rogue Valley Baseball league Sunday, turning back the South Umpqua Trojans 6 to 5. Riddle still tops the loop by a half -game over Cave Junc tion. With its second RVL ver dict, Butte Falls knotted with Camp White for third posi tion in the standings. All BF runs were in the fifth inning on singles by Jack Turk, Bill Rodgers and Bob Clark, a double by Lee Abbott, a groundout, two walks and two errors. Clark hit three for four for Butte Falls and Turk two for four. Dick James had three for five for Riddle.-one a triple. John Cavaner homered for the visi tors. Turk struck out six, tossing an eight-hitter for the Falls. Duane Miller of Riddle was reached for 10 hits and whif fed seven. Each chucker walk ed three men. Outfielder Doug Watson made two sensational catches for the Trojans to choke off BF runs. Brown's 70-15-9 record in cludes 32 knockouts. Lane's 42-5-0 list has 10 kayoes. Brown was stopped three times; Lane, twice. In Friday's Los Angeles 10 rounder, Rademacher of Col umbus, Ga., will try to win another shot at Patterson's heavyweight crown by beat ing high ranked Folley of Chandler, Ariz. Met Champ In Debut In Rademacher's first pro fessional fight last August, the former Olympic cham pion tried to take the world title from Patterson and was knocked ut in the sixth round. He hasn't fought since. Folley is favored at 3-1 be cause of his greater experi ence. Should he beat Rade macher more impressively than Patterson did, he might get title consideration.
