Arnold Portocarrero, a sore arm case last year pitched a two-hitter as the Baltimore Orioles downed the Cleveland Indians, 3-2, in 10 innings. It was Portocarrero's ninth win. Rov Sievers 25th homer gave the Washington Senators 5-4 victors after Dick Dono van pitched the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 decision in xne other major league activity. The Tigers scored all their rims in the fifth inning oi the opener on a triple by Gail Harris and four singles, in cluding one by Bunning. Podres, who now has beaten every NL rival, pitched a no hitter for four innings, as he scored his ninth victory in the Coliseum and 10th over-all. Swashes Round-Tripper Jerry Lumpe hit a three-run homer and also drove in a fourth run as Ford won his Uth game for the Yankees. Berra, playing right field for the first time this season, broke up the opener after Inos Slaughter led off the 10th inning with his fourth hit. -. (UPD The American grass court tennis season officially got under way today with top U.S. and foreign stars competing in the opening rounds of the 59th annual Pennsylvania Lawn Tennis tourney at Merion Cricket club. Althea Gibson, top woman player in the world, and U.S. men's champion Mai Ander son led the 128 entries into the week-long tourney. Six of the 10 ranking U.S. wom en players also were entered. Huskies Defeat Soviet Rowers Moscow (UPD Even their Russian hosts agreed today that superior training enabled the University of Washington eight-oared crew to even its score with the Leningrad Trud club in their historic meeting on the choppy waters of the Khimi reservoir. "The Washington boys were in their best form as a result of a week's practice on the reservoir," losing Coach B. Brechko conceded after the Huskies glided home almost two lengths ahead of the Len ingrad oarsmen Saturday. For the winning and tying runs in -the seventh against the Dairy Maids, Eugene util ized two bases on balls, three errors, a ground out and sin gles by Carolyn Jones and Conner. The three tallies in the sixth for the visitors re sulted from two walks, two errors, a squeeze sacrifice by Jensen, three wild pitches and a stolen base. Are You Ready ...Read JMs We Are Cheney Studs Wrap Up Slate With Win The Central Point Cheney Studs snapped a long losing streak Saturday night by turning back Prineville here 3-1 in an American Legion junior baseball game. Pitcher Al McKinnis per mitted four hits and struck out 10 while going the dis tance for the winners. Jerry Riley, the losing pitcher gave up three hits and struck out six. McKinnis . retired the side in order in the top of the first inning, and Riley came back to put down the Studs in order after he had walked lead-off batter Harley Dick erson. In the top of the second Mc Kinnis found himself in the only serious situation he faced during the contest. With one out, Jerry Cole picked up a single for the vis itors, and then stole second. Next up Bill Gittings was then walked. Cole and Git tings each advanced a base on a passed ball, and then Mc Kinnis walked Tom Nichols to load the bases. Jim Grelle, Dave Edstrom, Grelle's teammate on the Uni versity of Oregon track squad, and Lt. Bill Dellinger of the IT. S. Air Force and a former Duck trackster, will compete against the pick of the Russian track world July 27 and 28. Bartzen Takes Tennis Crown Chicago (UPD Bernard (Tut) Bartzen, Dallas, Tex., newly-crowned National Clay courts tennis champion, said today he was "lucky to win" his title struggle with Sam Giammalva. The second-seeded Bartzen Sunday beat the 23-year-old Giammalva, a senior at the University of Houston, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, to capture the Clay championship for the second time in four years. The Studs picked up what proved to be the winning run of the game in their half of the second. With one out John Anhorn reached first on an error and stole second. Then with two out Phil" Tucker walked, and Anhorn and Tucker scored on errors. The visitors came back in the fourth to make their bid when lead off batter Jerry Cole smashed a double, his second hit of the evening. Gittings then hit a single, and Cole scored on ari error as Gittings advanced to second. McKinnis then retired the side without further incident. Scoring Ends . In the bottom of the fourth Central Point came back with another run to end the scor ing of the game. With one out, McKinnis and Tucker hit back to back singles. Gary Johnson then reached first on a fielder's choice and with the help of an error the local club loaded the bases. Dickerson followed with a sacrifice fly which scored McKinnis stand ing up. McKinnis picked up his second single for the evening in the sixth inning but there were no more serious scoring threats from either side. The victory wound up the season for the Studs who have been sponsored by Myer-Hol-land American Legion Post and Cheney Lumber com pany. Toronto Booms Back Into Race United Press International The Toronto Maple Leafs who just a few days ago were headed downhill, are right back in the heat of the Inter national league pennant race. The Leafs knocked off league - leading Montreal twice Sunday, 7-4 and 2-1, to close within three games of the lead. Toronto had been seven lengths behind last Friday, but narrowed the gap by beating the Royals four straight times over the week end. In other games Sunday, Buffalo defeated Rochester, 11-1, in the nightcap after the Red Wings took the op ener, 5-3; Havana edged Mi ami twice, 3-1 and 2-1; and Columbus squeezed out a 1-0 verdict over Richmond in a single encounter.
