r IS MAI. TRIBUNE, Mtdfofd, Oregon, Monday, July 21, 19S8 Timber Appraisal Method Improved Salem l?& The State Tax CommSKion's timber epprais al methods have been much iSproved because of addi tional manpower made pos sible by the statewide reap praisal program, Wallsoe Eu banks, the commission's tim ber apraisal supervisor, testi fied Friday at a continuing fact-finding hearing on timber taction. Eubanks said that when he joined the commission staff as an appraiser in 1946 there was only one other forester employed. Now there are 18 graduate foresters in the tim ber secon in addition to other technicians. Even this staff is not suf ficient to gather all the in formation needed for com plete evaluations, Eubanks said, since the reappraisal program thus far involves 14 of the state's timber-bearing counties. Eubanks said his depart ment needs more co-operation from the timber industry in the gathering of data neces ' sary for more accurate valua tions. He said lack of co-operatic is probably due to fear that information would lead to higher valuations as well as giving information to competitors.
