O Howard Gault, Sheriff Plains Stales Brace for More Flood Threats Uniied Press International "Warring weather systems erupted in a new round of thunder-storms in the flood stricken Plains States during the night and sent tornado funnels darting across three states. Missouri and Kansas, where flood damage has mounted into the millions of dollars, braced for additional flood j threats today in the wake of week end storms. Weathermen said the Mis souri river was expected to crest at 31 feet, six feet above flood stage, at St. Charles, Mo., Tuesday. The Mississippi river at St. Louis was slated to crest at 30 feet, its highest level since 1952. Twister Touches Ground More than a dozen twisters or tornado funnels swirled across sections of Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming Sun day night. A twister touched down near Cheyenne, Wyo., but caused no damage. One twister struck near Weskan, Kan., Sunday night, injuring one man and damag ing several farm buildings. Weskan is near the Colorado line. The floods In Kansas and Missouri were blamed for at least two deaths during the week end. and two other per sons were missing. About 100 residents of the Central Missouri towns of Cedar City and Mokane aban doned their homes Sunday night as the Missouri river- overflowed in the area. -Numerous roads ' in Kansas and Missouri still were blocked by floodwaters. SPRING FOR PEACOCKS Santa Barbara, Calif. UPD It may be summertime for people but for peacocks it's spring when a male peacock's fancy turns to thoughts of love. That's Bob Byer's expla nation for reports to the sher iffs department" that strange peacocks are invading new neighborhoods. Myers knows about such things. To know what a miracle it is, you must first see the terror stricken face of a child who has grown up overseas, know ing only violence and priva tion a child like a certain orphaned four-year-old boy. His parents had lost their lives struggling for freedom. When the boy was brought to an orphanage operated by "one of America's religious faiths, his eyes were filled, with terror. For weeks he failed to respond to kindness only stared with wide, wary eyes. But one day he forgot. He accepted a toy. Slowly his eyes softened and a smile began to grow at the corners of his mouth till he was grin ning happily. PtEMSE i Six foot, 16-year-old Gary Myers, who has been delivering the Mail Tribune in south Medford for the past year has been doing a man-sized job, proof of which, lies in the many comments sumbitted by his customers. A typical comment will refer to Gary's willingness to go out of his way to place the paper in a spot where it will not get wet during the rainy months and how thoughtful he is in respect to other' peoples property in that the paper is never in the flowers or shrubs or it is never thrown against a screen door or glass window. It is no wonder that his customers like him and think he is tops. Gary is a sophomore at Medford High school and maintains a B plus average in his school work. He plays the trumpet in the school band and is fond of mathematics and the various subjects pertaining to it. Upon his graduation, he hopes to study engineering at Oregon State college and enter into a career in the Armed Services, prefer ably the Air Force. Like most teen-age boys Gary likes to keep busy, and with a steady income each month from the profits of his paper route he is in a better position than many other boys of his age because he is in a position to do things that cost money. He is a member of the American Bowling Congress and during the winter months bowls in league play. During the summer he spends week, ends with his family at Klamath Lake where he fishes and helps his Dad build a summer cabin. He and his Dad have recently acquired a motor boat with which they do considerable water skiing and a pick-up truck to haul building supplies to the lake. Gary likes to read when he has the time. He likes biographies of world heroes, particularly those who have participated in the great wars. He also devours racing literature dealing in sport cars and hopes someday to own one. Gary feels that he is very lucky to be one of the fortunate few to take advantage of the benefits of a paper route. It is estimated that only one boy out of ten has the opportunity to manage a route and profit from the experience it brings. Honorable The following boys have also won a pat on the back for their excellence and outstanding perform ance in delivering the Mail Tribune during the month of June.
