Fire protection in this area is afforded by the Shady Cove-Trail fire depart ment, manned by volunteers. Fires outside the district are taken over by the State Forestry Department and in some cases fire fighting equip ment owned by individual log ging companies has been put to use. To report a fire resi dents should dial 3011, Shady Cove, a number which should be written in a handy place for ready reference at all times. In reporting a fire one should be sure to give con cise directions on how to reach the place and on whose property the fire is located, also who is reporting the fire. Three fires have occurred in the area within the past two weeks. The latest, Mon day evening, was a small brush fire near Elder's mill, Trail, presumably caused by a short in a power pole. The blaze was controlled by the State Forestry department. The Shady Cove-Trail fire de partment was called out last week on a small brush fire which occurred on the edge of Tom Keithley's property next to the George Field resi dence at Trail. This fire could have spread to homes in the area. The most serious fire oc curred July 5, early in the morning, and completely de stroyed the old Thurman home up Elk creek.
