Research on Multiple Sclerosis At a meeting of the Na tional Multiple Sclerosis So ciety, Dr. Albert B. Sabin re ported studies which suggest that at least in some cases, multiple scle rosis can be due to a virus, il perhaps the '4 iui uuc mat, pi in duces blisters on the lips of persons suf fering from a fever. It . is good to know that research of this type is going forward. All persons much interested in multiple sclerosis should belong to the Society. Its ad dress is 257 Fourth Avenue, New York 10, N.Y. In a recent number of the British Medical Journal, there is a report of good results ob tained in the treatment of schizophrenia with the new drug that is used in the treat ment of diabetes. Of the 60 patients treated, 45 were soon discharged recovered or much relieved. As yet, no one can guess why the new drug works so well in this mental disease. It is sad that supposedly civilized countries still carry on their books ancient and cruel and senseless laws. For instance, in England, the Brit ish Medical Association is now trying to do something about the law which makes an at tempted suicide a criminal of fense. In the old days when a man succeeded in committing suicide, his body was denied burial in holy ground; it was exposed at a crossroads with a stake driven through the heart. Today, a man who sur vives an attempt at suicide can be sent to jail. Just re cently, such a person, mental ly ill, was given two years in jail, but fortunately, the judge sensed that this was not what the unhappy man needed, and let him off with two months. Even that was stupid when what the de pressed fellow needed was psychiatric care and probably a few -electroshock treat ments. It would be wonderful if some day legislators would take a day off and erase from our law books all these old illogical laws that have come Naval Reserve Unit To Drill Today . Powerful New Sex Hormone In the last issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Drs. John C. Babcock and associates re ported that they have synthe sized a new hormone of the progesterone type. They say it is 300. times as potent as similar drugs now in use, and it can be taken by mouth. This should make it an immensely better and more useful drug than the progesterone which, in a wom an's body, serves somewhat as an antagonist to estrogen (the main ovarian hormone), and helps the woman, when pregnant, to carry her. infant to term. If she starts to abort, it may quiet her womb and thus save her baby for her.
