Jablonski's homer, his 10th of the season, came in the fourth inning and enabled the Giants to tie the score at 4- 4. Daryl Spencer then chased home Orlando Cepeda Grants Pass Cubs who have dropped a single encouter. Intermediate- league action after four weeks finds the Medford Yankees on top of the heap with no defeats and four wins. In second spot is Central Point with a three and one record. Pee Wee standings show the Medford Tigers leading the league after winning six of their seven contests. The lone Tiger defeat came July 3 when third place Central Point knocked them off 10-6. - The second place Ashland Cubs, sporting five wins for six outings, suffered their only loss at the hands of the Tigers when the local club stopped them 2-1 on July 10. Action Monday in the Cub league will find the Grants Pass Cubs pitted against the Ashland club, and Medford trying to hold onto first place as it meets the Grants Pass Bears. Intermediate league action Wednesday schedules Jack sonville at Ashland, Lone Pine at Central Point, and the Med ford Giants at the Medford Yankees. The Medford Wildcats will tangle with the Medford Tig ers Tuesday in Pee Wee league action. Other encount ers include Ashland Cubs at Central Point, Lone Pine at Talent, and. Eagle Point at the Ashland Bears. Ra mon Monzant, who limited Pittsburgh to one single in four innings of relief work, was the winning pitcher while Bob Porterfield was the loser. It was the Giants' fifth straight victory and their eighth in the last nine games. Score On Double The Braves scored all their runs in the opening inning on a double by Mel Roach, Frank Torre's single and a homer by Hank Aaron, his 20th of the season. However, the Cubs made it close on solo homers by Ernie Banks his 26th in the second frame and Dale Long in the seventh. Joe Jay allowed only five hits in picking up his fifth victory against three losses. The Cubs almost pulled the game out of the fire in the ninth when Sam Taylor singled but Andy Pafko then made a great catch on a long drive by Bobby Thomson to end the game. The St. Louis Cardinals ended a seven - game losing streak by edging the Cincin nati Redlegs, 1-0. on a 10th inning home run by Ken Boy er. Alex Kellner, making his first start for the Redlegs, en gaged in a scoreless pitching duel with Larry Jackson that ended with Boyer's clout. Kellner scattered eight hits and struck out six while Jack son allowed only a half dozen hits. The Los Angeles Dodgers entertained the Philadelphia Phillies in a night game. Eisen hower full honors on his ar rival here Friday on his "study mission" and good will tour of the Central American republics. Foreign Minister Alfredo Vargas headed the official welcoming party at the air port. There was a guard of honor formed by three com panies of the Civil Guard, a contingent of military cadets and a military band. About 1,000 persons watch ed the welcoming ceremonies at the airport. The only sour note was sounded by the uni versity students council, which refused an invitation to send a delegation to partici pate in the welcoming cere monies. Prior to 'Dr. Eisen hower's arrival the council issued leaflets accusing the United States of encouraging Latin American dictators.. CLUB NEWS Central Point Clubs The last meeting of the Central Point general 4-H clubs was called to order by President Carol von der Hel len, Tuesday evening in the Central Point Grange hall. Nancy McKay's and Patti Strauss' letters of apprecia tion for their scholarships to summer school were read. Dave Foote and V e r n o 1 a Hutchison gave reports on summer school. Bob Kuest presented a water fountain to Mrs. Anhorn. Our club bought this for the Anhorns for do ing so much toward 4-H. Joan Dobrot gave a report on the home economics pre fair. We discussed our livestock pre-fair which will be held July 26 at the C. W. Anhorn home on Freeman rd. Every one is invited to attend. Ice cream bars were served, and meeting adjourned. With help of therapist Roberta Brodsky, Campanella, paralyzed from the chest down since an auto accident last January, exercises his shoulders and arms with a weighted pulley. When staff members at the hospital congratulated him on being able to pull the 10-pound weight easily, he joked: "Well, I've been resting for months." MedfordTribune SIPODIfETrS w ams Gives Te ver Tigers, 7-6 By United Press International Ted Williams, who claims that Friday night games fre quently leave him tired on the week end, looked mighty powerful Saturday as he un loaded a towering home run in the 12th inning to give the Boston Red Sox a comeback 7-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Williams' clout, which traveled 450 feet into the right field grandstand, was his 15th homer of the season and came with Jim Piersall on second base. Piersall led off the 12th with a single and advanced to second on a sac rifice. It was the sixth straight victory for the Red Sox, who had to come from behind twice to win. A home run by Sam White, a hit batsman and singles by Gene Stephens and Pete Runnels enabled Boston to tie the score at 5-5 in the ninth. Detroit went ahead in the top of the 12th on a run scoring double by Billy Mar tin, then Williams settled the issue in the lower half of the inning. Kuenn Homers Ossie Virgil, Harvey Kuehn and Jim Hegan homered for Detroit. Savings Bond Sales Show Decline in Area Salesof U. S. Savings Bonds in Jackson county for the first six months of this year totaled S438,000, which is S55,000 below sales for the same per iod a year ago. June sales this year amoun ted to S77.000, a decrease of S5.000 from June, 1957, accor ding to figures supplied by the U.S. Treasury department. Throughout the state, sales for the first six months drop npd S59.000 from the previous year's figure of $18,686,000,! records show. When Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the tele phone, went to his workshop in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, to wrestle with scientific prob lems, he would usually stuff a towel around the telephone there so it could not ring and interrupt him, the National i Geographic Magazine says. Ramon Monzant turned a sharp relief job for the Giants who now have won five straight and eight of their last nine games. The frail looking Venezuelan held the Pirates to one single "while blanking them during the four innings he worked. Johnny Antonelli pitched the final inning and set the side down in order to cement Monzant's sixth victory. Porterfield was the third of four Pirate . pitchers -to work and suffered his fourth defeat against one win. With Pittsburgh leading 3-1 in the fourth inning, Willie Kirkland who had smashed his eighth home run on the season earlier walked and went to second on a single to shortstop by Valmy Thomas. Jablonski then stepped in for pitcher Don Johnson and powered a drive into the left center field pavilion which tied the score. Pittsburgh had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but then Kirkland started Curt Raydon on the way out in the Giants' half of the frame with his 420-foot blast into the right centerfield bleachers. A two-run single by southpaw pitcher Don Gross capped a three-run Pirate rally in the fourth. Then the Giants struck back for three of their own on Jablonski's clout to tie it. Manager Bill Rigney missed his second straight game when he decided to return home with a bad cold after checking into the ball park. Rigney said "he wanted to get himself in shape for the three week road trip which the Giants open at Philadelphia Tuesday night. Patterson Hits Harder Champ Says Chicago (UPD Heavy weight Champion Floyd Pat terson said Saturday he's punching with "more power" and he will be ready for a successful title defense against Roy Harris next month. Patterson took advantage of the period between trains on his trip west for a 30-minute workout at the CYO gym and went through all the training routine except boxing. "I don't have any preferred weight for this fight," he said, "but Til probably go about 187. i think I've been getting stronger and growing without putting on any weight so I feel like I'm punching with more , power, but you'll have to ask my ..opponents about that." Manager Cus D'Amato said Patterson would determine his own weight for the fight by the "way he feels." It might be 182 or 190 or any where in between. D'Amato said he expected the fight would draw about $300,000 at the gate and he had no idea what the returns would be from theater tele vision which has guaranteed $210,000. Demonstration In Tennis Set For Gold Hill A tennis demonstration at the Hanby School tennis courts, Fifth ave. and Eighth st., in Gold Hill will be given Tuesday, July 22 at 7 p.m., according to Romulo P. Tod Tibbutt, Medford, and Howard Dugan, Sams Valley, will demonstrate the fore hand stroke, backhand stroke, how to serve, and how to be in position on the court, Cor ona reported. Jerry Kalapus, Medford, a member of the Pacific Univer sity tennis team, and Bob Gourley, Ashland, a member of the Southern Oregon col lege tennis team, are slated to play a singles match.
