Wilford C. Long, secretary of the Portland building chap ter of the AGC, said about 7000Tnen would be affected. The announcement said the building division had voted to cease operations on the theory that "a strike against one is a strike against all." Earlier, only the heavy con struction division was involved. Lloyd made the announce ment to the House of Com mons after the British Cabinet had held its fifth emergency session in two days on the Middle East crisis. Britain has alerted 10,000 troops and units of the Royal Navy to stand by for possible Mideast action alongside the United States. Lloyd told the House that Dulles had invited, him to Washington. , Goldf ine Confirms Washington (TJPI) Textile tycoon Bernard Goldfine con firmed Wednesday he tele phoned Presidential Assistant Sherman Adams 43 times in a recent six-month period, and intimated that Adams may have called him about as often. In reply to questions by the house influence-investigating subcommittee, Goldfine said he couldn't say who called whom the more often. He said he calls his friend Adams "whenever I feel it's neces sary" to keep posted on gov ernment matters, such as tar iffs, which affect his business. Usually these begin ''S7h& iwith a little YJ&&m Ibleb, the top of which soon ulcerates to leave a white, painful sore. After five days it heals. In my exper ience, such Dr Alvarez s o r e s are usually due to the eating of some food to which the per son is sensitive. In my own case, they are due to choco late, but they .can be due to eating tomato, oranges, pine apple, or some other food. The thing to do is to keep a written record of the unusual foods eaten just before a can ker sore appears. One must not put down all the foods eaten, because then one gets so big a record it is hard to interpret it. There is no sense in putting down the foods that one eats every day, when nothing happens. Save a Torn-off Finger Tip At a meeting of the Ameri can Association of Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Beverly Doug las of Nashville said that whenever a child or an adult loses the tip of a finger it shouldn't be thrown away. The piece should be wrapped in a fresh sheet of cleaning tissue, and taken quickly with the patient to the near est hospital. Dr. Douglas says that he knows any number of persons who have had such tip of fingers sewed on again with excellent results. Natur ally, the sooner the piece is put back on, the better. Not infrequently, in the excite ment of the accident, the piece of tissue is lost or thrown away, and then a wild search has to be made for it. A Boy Who Wat Running His Mother Often when I see a boy running his mother with an iron hand, wonder why it never occurs to her to ask the child if he ever thinks of what sort of a mess he is going to grow up into. I re member seeing at Mayo's a boy of 15 who, for years, had kept his weak and mildly psychotic mother right under this thumb.- He ruled her with an iron hand, and whatever he demanded of her, he got. Whenever she tried to control him a bit, or to deny him something he wanted from a store, he went kito such a tantrum that she became frightened and gave in. Un fortunately, "the boy's father had decamped so that he was not around to help. Fortunately, the boy was very intelligent, so I asked him, "What do you plan to be in life?!! He said, "A lawyer." I said, "What do you think would happen to you, if when in court, you were ta lose all control of your temper as you now do so commnly?" "Wouldn't you make such a spectacle of yourself that the jury would decide against you?" After thinking a while, he agreed with me that that is probably what would happen. Then I asked him if he ever thought of marrying some day. He said, "Most cer tainly, yes. " I asked him, "But can you imagine any woman who could love you, or even live comfortably in the same house with you if you were constantly going into tantrums, demanding your own way in everything? Could she maintain any re spect for a person so childish and uncontrolled as you are? Again he thought for a while and said, "No. I guess you're right. No woman could like me the way I am." A woman writes asking if she should follow her hus band's wishes and put the family on a vegetarian diet. As I told her, one of the best answers to this was given by an able man who said, years ago, that anyone who goes on a vegetarian diet is likely only to be filled with wind and self-righteousness! It is hard to maintain good nutrition on a purely vege tarian diet. The structure of the stomach and bowel of man is much more that of a, car nivorous animaLthan that of an herbivorous animal. Ap parently the Creator did not intend us to live on vegetables and fruits. It is particularly dangerous to try to raise chil dren on a vegetarian diet, be cause they so need the good proteins that are to be found more often in meats than in vegetables. Actually, of course most vegetarians and - their children get by only because they add eggs and milk to their diet. I had a classmate in high school who managed to live on a vegetarian diet until she went to college 'and came up against difficllt courses in science. Then her nutrition failed, and she had to change to a normal mixed diet. On this, she became strong and well. I admire the idealism of people who refuse to eat meat from animals, but I doubt if their self-deinal does much good. Usually, they are incon sistent because they continue to wear shoes and belts and furs and many other materials made from animal.s Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to disg nose by mail.
