Business Picture Shows Recession Taking Upswing Washington (UPI) The business picture took on a brighter hue today. Govern ment reports disclosed im provements in industrial pro duction, personal income and housing construction. Economists said, however, business probably will con tinue to jog along at June levels, with customer sum mer slack temporarily offset ting upward forces. Economists said that re ports Tuesday on the economic front virtually nailed down their conviction that the re cession touched bottom in April. They foresaw no sub stantial upturn before au tumn. Production Expanded The good news came from: The Federal Reserve Board, which reported that factories and mines expand ed production in June for the second month in a row. The board's index, of industrial production climbed to 130 per cent of the 1947-49 average, four points above the April low. The Commerce Depart ment, which said personal in come rose again last month to an annual rate of $351,800, 000,000, a shade below the all time high of August 1957. Most of the $2 billion increase from May was in wages and salaries, the result of a long er factory work week and a higher level of employment. The Labor Department, which reported that housing starts in June set a 34-month record. For private starts alone, June saw an annual rate of $1,090,000 dwelling units, the best performance in two years. Trujillo Jr. Sails From Los Angeles San Pedro, Calif. In any case, the dashing young officer and his luxury yacht, designated a "man of war" although its only arma ment was a singleshot, line throwing gun, was gone from its Los Angeles Harbor berth.
