They didn't decide on that figure arbitrarily, either. If they can make it, they will shatter their own record of 19Vi games by which they won the 1936 American League pennant. The runaway Yankees in creased their lead to 13 games largest margin of the season with a 5-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox Monday night. Southpaw Whitey Ford breezed to his 11th victory while giving; up only three hits and walking none. He got the only run he really needed when Hank Bauer led off the first inning with his ninth homer off loser Early Wynn. Mickey Mantle slammed his 23rd homer in the seventh to help Ford run his lifetime record to 24-8 over the White Sox. Senators Blanked Ex-Yankee Jack Urban halt ed Kansas City's six-game los ing ftreak when he shutout Washington, 4-0, on four hits for his seventh triumph of the year. The Athletics rapped Pedro RamoSfor three runs in the first inning, Preston Ward doubling home two of the fans . and then scoring himself on Harry Simpson's single. Bob Boyd's eighth-inning homer broke up a pitching ' duel between Skinny Brown (md Herb Moford and led the Baltimora-prioles to a 2-1 win over the DetroiDTigers. Boyd also scored Balti more's first run in th opening inning when he doubled and came home on Gene Wood ling's single. Bolt Is scheduled to be one of 166 pros, including 11 for mer champions headed by de fending champion Lionel He bert, to tee off Thursday in the revamped tournament which this year for the first time changes from match to medal play because of finan cial reasons. The change in format was made because the big names were being knocked out in early rounds in recent years and the guys named Joe who survived couldn't draw pea nuts. This time it will be four medal play rounds of 18 holes each over the 6,710-yard par 35-35 70 Llanerch Country Club course. And, whether Bolt is on hand or not, the early favorite is' three-time winner Sammy Snead, at 46 still the man they fear the most.
