Berg Leads In Women's U.S. Open Minneapolis (UPI) , Freckle - faced Patty Berg fired her third straight sub par round for a 54-hole total of 216 and a three-stroke lead at the end of three rounds in the American Women's open at Brookfield country club Saturday. Miss Berg, the all - time money winner on the femin ine golf tour, fired a 73 for her 12-under-par total. She led Fay Crocker, Montevideo, Uruguay, by three strokes. Miss Crocker shot a four under par 72. Louise Suggs at Atlanta, Ga., who held the runner-up spot at the halfway mark, slumped to an 80 and was nine strokes off the pace at 225. The final round in the $7, 500 tournament will be play ed today. COOPER DEFEATS SEGAL Baastad, -Sweden (UPI) Wimbledon champion Ashley Cooper of Australia defeated Abe Segal of South Africa in straight sets Friday to gain the final in the men's singles of the Baastad International Tournament. Royals Led To Victory By Birrer By United Press International Any day now the call may go out for Babe Birrer, a strong right-handed pitcher with the Montreal Royals of the International league. Birrer, a 27-year-old, six foot 190-pounder, is making a strong bid to return to the major leagues, and the way the parent Los Angeles Dodg ers are going, he may bet the call. The native of Buffalo, N.Y., set the Buffalo Bisons down on six scattered hits Friday night to gain his 10th win of the season. It was Birrer's third shutout of the season and his eighth complete game. He saw previous major league action with the De troit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles. The victory kept the Royals five and one-half games in front of the second-place Tor onto Maple Leafs, who defeat ed the Rochester Red Wings, 3-2, as Don Johnson went all the way for his eighth vic tory. Elsewhere, the fifth- place Miami Marlins edged the Co lumbus Jets, 2-1, and the Richmond Virginians downed the Havana Sugar Kings, 7-2, on homers by Deron Johnson pitcher .Bob Wiesler 2nd. Wiesler scattered seven hits for his eighth win against four losses. U.S. Wins Semi-Final Davis Series Toronto (UPI) The United States clinched its American Zone Davis cup semifinal series against Can ada Saturday when Barry MacKay and Sammy Giam malva defeated Bob Bedard and Don Fontana, 6-1, 13-11, 6-4, in doubles. The doubles win followed victories ' by MacKay and Whitney Reed, of Alameda, Calif., in the onenine sineles matches and gave the Ameri can team an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The final singles matches Monday will pit Bedard against John Doufilas. Stan ford football player. It took MacKay. of Davton. Ohio, and Giammalva of Hou ston, Tex., an hour and 42 minutes to dispose of the Canadian doubles chamnions. Law Major Heads Links Chicago (UPI) Dan Sikes a Florida law. student, took advantage of every opportun ity Saturday to beat Bob Lud low, 3 and 2, and win the Na tional Public Links golf cham pionship. (UPI) The University of Wichita an nounced Friday that Mark Hasen, a guard at New York City's William Howard Taft High school, has signed a let ter of intent to enroll at that school. FIVE REDLEGS HONORED Cincinnati, Ohio (UPI) Five players were named charter members Thursday to the Cincinnati Redlegs Hall of Fame. The five were catch er Ernie Lombardi, who topped the voting by fans in a four-state area, first base man Frank McCormick and pitchers Bucky Walters, John ny Vandermeer and Paul Der ringer. HALL WINS GOLF MATCH , Ed Hall defeated Dr. Rob ert Buck in the quarter-finals of the championship flite of the Rogue Valley Country club golf championship last week. Other winners in that round include Bruce Stanley, D. C. Boals and Allen Holmes. The semi-finals of the tournament find Hall facing Goals and Stanley versus Holmes. Springfield, N.J. (UPI) Miss Maureen Orcutt, who won her first New Jersey Women's Golf Association championship in 1926, cap tured her ninth crown Friday with a 54-hole total of 236. (UPI) Rod Graber hit a homer with one down in the 10th inning Saturday to give the San Diego Padres an 8-7 Pa cific Coast league victory over the Vancouver Moun ties. . -, The Mounties had rallied for six runs after two were out in the ninth to go ahead, 7-5. San Diego tied it in the bottom of the ninth on Earl Averill's bases-loaded single with two out. The winning pitcher was Bud Podbielan (7-3). The loser was Gordon Sundin (4-6). The Padres scored two runs in the second inning. Eddie Kazak singled but was trap ped off first base on the re lay from the outfield. Larry Raines flied out. Dick Smith singled and Allen Jones doubled him home. GALLANT MAN WINS HOLYWOOD GOLD CUP Inglewood, Calif. (UPI) Gallant Man, coming come to the track on which he scored his first win, Saturday cap tured the $162,100 Hollywood Gold Cup by approximately three-quarters of a length. The lightly-built, English- bred Gallant Man and Eddie Schmidt fought it out to the Auburn Police Get Forger, They Think Auburn, Calif. (UPI) Au thorities have captured a forg er, but they were not sure who it is. They said he had identifi cation papers in his wallet positively identifying him as Lawrence Milton Hammer, or Laurence Michael Hammer or Allen Balati or Melvin Anel rob, who is 18, 21, 22 or 23 years old. They said he was an Army sergeant because he had an Army sergeant's uniform, or then again he was a Marine sergeant because he had a Marine uniform or else he was discharged from the Ma rines because he had dis charge papers to prove it. He came from either Reno or Carson City, Nev., or else San Francisco, Oakland, Hay ward, Sacramento, Grass Val ley, Truckee, Kings Beach or Tahoe City, Calif., depending Upon which set of papers you believed. 1 Authorities promised to put him in a single jail cell where presumably he may be able to pull himself together. McCone To Be Sworn In as AEC Chairman Washington (UPI) The White House announced Sat urday that John A. McCone, Los Angeles industrialist, will be sworn in Monday as chair man of the Atomic Energy commission. 1 The ceremony will be at the White House. The Senate this week confirmed McCone's nomination to the commission. On Monday President Eisen hower will designate him as chairman. ' McCone succeeds Lewis L. Strauss who retired June 30. NON-STOP DONOR Oswego, N. Y. (UPI) David E. Allen, 29, a junior at Oswego State Teachers Col lege, started giving blood at the age of 16 and hasn't stopped since. The native of Watertown, N. Y., donated his 69th pint of blood recently when the bloodmobile visited the college. Allen contributed his first pint 13 years ago in his home town and continued to heed the call while serving with the Navy during the Korean conflict. Split-Decision Gives Ortega Nod New York (UPI) Wel terweight contender Gaspar Ortega, who upset Mickey Crawford in a strangely scored TV bout, was war whooping for a $300,000 title fight Saturday. Co-manager Nick Croby said the lanky Mexican In dian from Tiajuana could draw a $300,000 gate with champion Virgil Akins at Los Angeles in September because of his split 10-round decision Friday night over Crawford at Madison Square Garden. Crawford, a fighting com mercial artist from Saginaw, Mich., was a 2-1 choice be cause of his four straight vic tories this year. But the two judges favored Gaspar,, 8-2 and 6-4. Then referee Mark Conn provided the widest dis crepancy in many, many moons by putting Crawford ahead, 7-3. Apparently it was a very Bernburgoo Wins At Arlington Chicago (UPI) Bernbur goo, a 19-to-l shot, pulled a "Silky ' Sullivan" to nip the favored Round Table by a head and win the $85,000 Warren Wright memorial at Arlington Saturday. Bernburgoo, the entry of the W. H. Bishop stables, ran last in the pack for the first 516 of the mile and a fur long race before Jockey Clar ence Meaux let him go. Bernburgoo then swept wide of the turn and shot into the home stretch. Cutting to mid-track, Bernburgoo pulled past the field of seven other horses to victory. Bernburgoo, timed in 1:43 35, only 15 off the . track record, set by Coaltown in 1949, paid $40.80, $6.80 and $3.40, while Round Table, the Travis Kerr entry ridden by Johnny Longden, paid $2.60 and $2.20. Shan Pac, owned by T. A. Grissom, returned $3.40 to show. Shan Pac was coupled as an entry .with stablemate, Shoerullah, which ran fourth after heading the field for mbst of the distance. Two horses were scratched from the original field of 10 as Round Table became the favorite at 1-5 for the eighth running of the race. Madame Kai-shek Ends Hospital Visit New Orleans (UPI) Ma dame Chiang Kai-shek Satur day ended her visit to the bed side of ailing Gen. Claire L. Chennault. The first lady of Formosa arrived Friday to see her friend of more than 20 years at the Ochsner Foundation hospital, where Chennault, leader of the World War II Flying Tigers, is gravely ill with lung cancer. "When I learned of my friend's illness I did not want to let a fortnight pass before coming to see him," she said.
