O Hitchcock (Continued) I can't even stand suspense. But everyone loves it, so I.give it to them. I've learned one thing about people since I made my first thriller, "The Lodger," about Jack the Ripper: if there is anything movie-goers like more than being scared, it is to conquer their fears. Obviously you can't give them one without the other. However, I'm not a believer in valence. I've never made a picture about criminals, gangsters, or thugs. I don't like to show a murder being committed, unless it's with a frozen leg of lamb or by drinking a harmless looking glass of milk. It's not only because I detest violence, but because I feel that an approach by suggestion is much more powerful , than what you can show on the screen.
