James Vandejrree, of Experiment With Educational TV Being Renewed San' Francisco (UPI) A unique experiment in educa tion by TV is being renewed with bright high school stu dents, collegiate groups and prison inmates registered for such courses as science, psy chology, economics and fresh man English. The program is conducted by San Francisco State Col lege and educational station KQED, with a $200,000 grant for the Ford Foundation. Last year the experiment here drew nationwide atten tion when 169 students en rolled in the TV courses. Reg ular college credits were earn ed by 97 of them, and others enrolled as "auditors" with out credit.' Results of the 1956-57 TV school year have been- fully analyzed but this year's start drew enlarged interest. About 75 gifted students in seven San Francisco high schools were enrolled for full college credits in video courses at home. Or they may wave classroom watch the screen in the confinement of San Quentin Prison. Small Fees Bruce Russell, San Quen- tin's director of instructions, is enthusiastic about the pro gram, and so are the inmates. Some 40 took ,TV courses last year,, and many more have en rolled this term. Regular collegiate students may arrange to watch the courses at ome. Or they'may have classroom sessions with a television set. Or they may be in the classroom with the instructor while the cameras are picking up the lecture. Students pay a small fee for registration and materials. At the end of the term they take written examinations. A new course being offered on TV this semester is science. It will feature physical sci ences and astronomy. Four other courses offered last year are being repeated psychol ogy, American economy, Eng lish and creative arts. "We feel, as educators, that educational television is not a panacea for the huge enroll ments and teacher shortage," said Olean Cunke, president of San Francisco State. "But it is of tremendous value as an adjunct. "This year our job is to learn how effective it is. "We must learn how many students can adapt themselves Vale Courthouse Nearly Demolished. It gave them headaches, big it made their job easier. The western customs police must prevent West Berliners from buying food, manufac tured products and other goods, including gasoline, in the Soviet sector of theCfcity. Similarly, .. Communist cus toms police on the other side of the east-west city border prevent East Berliners from buying in West Berlin. . Heavy Fines The Communists, in an ef fort to get West German marks, sell gasoline to west ern motorists for one mark, 40 pfennig (33 cents) a gallon in West currency. The price in West Berline is just about double. So many a West Ber liner tries to tank upOin the. East. It used to be easy to catch these "smugglers." Customs police just had to sniff the suliar fumes of the eastern gas. Last year they nabbed more than 2,000 western mo torists who paid finest as hih as 80 marks ($20) for very gallon of gasoline they bought in the East. But now the Communis have improved the quality q their gasoline and 1 but( eradicated its distinctive bad smell. So western custom now has to carry out chemi cal checks to detect g smug gling. O Stations Hidden The(Comunists also Jave made it more difficult to ob serve western motorists who fill up in the East. The specTal gasoline stations serving west erners used to be near the bor der. Now they have been moved much deeper into the Soviet sector. Often they are disguised as ordinary garages or placed where they are un observable from the street. The Communists actually are not selling their gasoline at a loss by cutting the west ern price in half. The West; German mark on the free mar ket is worth four times the East German mark. So when they collect one West mark, 40 pfennig a gallon, they actu ally are getting the equiva lent of five marks, 60 pfennig a gallon in their own cur rency. In addition they are piling up West marks to use in finan cing propaganda in the West or to buy needed goods. San Rafael, Calif. Vanderrae, the most seri ously hurt, suffered a broken shoulder. Six others perished when the 90-ton plane crashed and broke in two 600 miles north west of Honolulu last Friday. At the time, the giant cargo plane was flying from Hick am Air Fprce Base to Japan.
