Local Men Named To DAY Positions George Distell, Medford, has been appointed state' pub licity director for the Disabled American Veterans, Pat Gra ham, DAV state commander, has announced. , Distell replaces Graham as publicity director. Treavell Turpln, Medford, has been appointed to the DAV state employment com mittee. Turpin served as a representative of the DAV on the National Employ the Phy sically Handicapped committee. (Brainerd photo) Horses Injured in Trailer Accident Portland (UPI) A trailer carrying two show horses overturned on the west end of the Steel bridge Friday. The two horses escaped serious in jury. The trailer overturned after breaking away from the auto mobile by which it was being towed. The horses were pinned in the trailer for about 30 minutes. " They had given a perform ance at Jantzen beach and were being taken to Salem for another show when the acci dent occurred, owner William McGraw, North Ridge,. Calif., said. WAVE Recruiter To Be In Medford Tuesday WAVE Recruiter Kay Luna will be in Medford Tuesday, July 8, to interview girls in terested in joining the Navy, according to the local Navy recruiting substation. Mrs. Luna has information on various enlistment pro grams including the new three-year program and the advanced science college pro gram. Girls interested in an interview should call SPring 2-4060 for an appointment or visit the local Navy recruiting office in the post office build ing on July 8. A GIRL AT LAST Watertown, N. Y. (UPI) The Danforth clan went more than 150 years without a girl being born. Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Danforth be came the parents of Christina Susan the first female de scendant since before 1800. Local Resident Adopts Greek Boy James G. Pedersen, 78 Per rydale ave., Medford, has fi nancially "adopted" a 10-year-old Greek boy through Foster Parents' Plan, Inc.,-according to Plan officials. The boy, Konst antinos (Kostas) Kyletsis, lives with his parents and a younger brother in Drama. The four of them have been surviving on an average monthly in come of only $6.66, the offi cials report. Kostas father has suffered from asthma for the past sev en years and has been unable to work. His mother works in the field to bring in the only income that the four have had recently. "Home" is a one-r o o m house built of mud bricks, and having an earthen floor. There is only one bed, no elec tricity and no running water. Pedersen became a foster parent by offering to contrib ute $15 a month for the child's support for at least one year. Foster Parents' Plan has rehabilitated more than 76,000 children and is now helping 11,500 young sters, according to Plan offi cials. Full information on how to become a foster parent to a child in Europe, Korea, or Viet Nam will be sent to any individual, school or group requesting it from Foster Par ents' Plan, 352 Fourth ave., New York City, N.Y. Medford Man Arrested By Local Police John Francis Selvey, 245 North Holly st., was arrested by Medford police early Fri day and held on $110 bail on a charge of being drunk in public and a traffic citation for failing to leave informa tion at the scene of an ac cident. According to the police re port, Selvey's vehicle collid ed early Friday morning with a parked vehicle owned by Phillip VanSchoonhoven, 819 South Central ave., in front of VanSchoonhoven's residence. Becken, who has been active in UMC work since its incep tion in Medford. He is a mem ber of the Medford ' Lions club, Elks, Southern Oregon Child Guidance, Clinic associa tion and the Medford Safety Council. Becken is a member of the First Methodist church and resides with his wife and two children at 1211 Queen Ann ave. Last year Becken's division was the first to ex ceed its goal. Killingsworth, Mrs. Minnie Bloomingcamp, New Record Set in Albany Carnival Albany j (UPI) A new world record in tree topping was set by Harold Johnson of Castle Rock, Wash., at the 14th annual Timber Carnival finals Friday. Johnson topped an 18-inch tree in 1:26.2 minutes. He knocked nearly ten seconds off the former record of 1:36 set by Stan Yon, Pendleton, in 1955. Hearings Salem Reasons for the variations in timber taxation in several Oregon counties will be aired at public hear ings before the Oregon State tax commission beginning on Monday at 1:30 p.m. The three-man tax commis sion is slated to hear assess ors and boards of equaliza tion from Benton,. Coos, Doug las and Lane counties during the first week of the sessions. Tax Commission Chairman C. W. Chambers reported a wide divergence in valuation, of timber by the different counties in Oregon, and ex pressed the hope that these hearings will enable the com mission to perform its func tion of equalization.. The tax commission has re quested that any persons in terested in -giving testimony at the hearings submit written requests to the executive of fice of the commission at the state office building, Salem.
