o Back Stairs: Br DAYTON MOORE United Press International Washington (UPI) Back stairs at the Whitehouse: President Eisenhower is spending the Fourth of July at his Gettysburg, Pa., farm. As usual, it will be a quiet, secluded, family affair. His first three Independ ence Day observances as Pres ident were spent at Camp Dsvid, the presidential hide away in the Catoctin Moun tains on the Maryland-Pennsylvania harder. On the next two, he relaxed at his Gettys burg, Pa., farm home on the edge of the Civil War battlefield. Ike at Gettysburg Farm He has confined his Inde pendence Day observances to take it easy. Golf, fishing, bridge, privately-shown mov ies and just relaxing with his family and close personal friends. Today is only the second time the President and the first lady have had their grandchildren with them on the Fourth. The last time was at Gettysburg in 1956. Mrs. Eisenhower's mother, Mrs. John S. Doud of Denver, was along at Camp David in 1953, The President now is an "honorary twirlie." Marine Helicopter Squadron One is sued him a card after his flight in one of its whirley birds. It said the President, "having been duly indoctri nated in forward, backward, upward, downward and sta-, tionary flight, is hereby desig nated 'honorary twirlie. " Similar cards were given to White Hcftse staff aides and newsmen who rode on presi dential helicopter flights. In the future, White House newsmen will be charged for their rides when they use military helicopters" to cover presidential trips. Recent trips to Annapolis, Md., were trial runs. Newsmen requested that on future flights they pay their fare, just as they do on airline planes chartered by the White House for the long er presidential trips. Indications are that report ers will be permitted to ac company the President by helicopter with one excep tion. Eisenhower is standing pat in his refusal to allow newsmen to go along when he uses a whirlybird for trips to his Gettysburg, Pa., farm. He considers the farm his personal home a part of his private life and there is no reason to help reporters cover his activities there. The Washington Zoo has been beseiged with questions about vicunas since Boston millionaire Bernard Gold fine's gift of a vicuna coat to presidential assistant Sher man Adams hit the headlines. The inquiries poured in by letter, telephoee and in per son. Those whd wanted to see a vicuna were disappointed. The zoo hasn't had one since its vicuna "stinky" died a year ago. Nor does the zoo's director, Dr. Theodore M. Reed, plan to buy another in the near future. He explaiined that he is concentrating on purchase of U.S. animals for the time being. And a foot-and-mouth disease ban on importing hoofed animals from South Williams Named Association Head Bill Williams, a vice presi dent of Bear Cerek Orchards, was elected president of the Medford Pear Shippers asso ciation recently. Williams succeeds Harold A. Holmes, sales manager of Rogue River Orchards, as head of the industry group. Warren Bayliss,, Myron Root and company, was elect ed vice president and Fred Morlan was retained as secretary-treasurer. But the zoo has some llama, alpaca and guanaco, which qualify as a poor man's ver sion of the vicuna. Their wool is npt as fine or costly but is not what one would call inexpensive.
