o Gibson Only Yank Left In Singles Wimbledon, England (UPI) An almost all - Australian semifinal round in mens sin gles was on tap in the Wimble don tennis championships to day while disappointed Ameri can entries were folced to turn to doubles competition. Top-seeded Ashley Cooper and third-ranked Mervyn Rose met in one all-Aussie semi final match. In the other, fourth-seeded Igale Fraser of Australia was pitted against sixth-seeded Kurt Nielsen tt Denmark. Althea Gibson of New York, the defending champion in women's singles, was the only American to gain a semi-final spot in either men's or wom en's singles today. This marked the second straight year that no Ameri can reached the semi-finals in men's singles. .Barry Mackay of Dayton, Ohio, was eighth seeded, came closest but prov ed an easy victim for south paw Rose, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, in a guarter-final match Tuesday. (UPI) The "new" Silky Sullivan may not provide as many thrills as the "old," but if his latest race is any .indication he's probably going to make a lot of bettors happier. Silky, after a long drought in which he failed to win a race de3pite his highly publi cized late finish, came home in front at Hollywood Park Tues day afternoon to capture the $7500 San Clemente Purse by two lengths. q Forsaking his usual desper ate gallop in the stretch, Silky- dismal failure in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness-never trailed by more than three lengths under a steady ride by jockey Bill Shoemaker.
